If you look at other videos you will see similar messages. I'm seriously thinking someone should make a documentary or something about her because.. I honestly think she may be the most important artist of the entire modern music era.
Yes, truly! There's a constant theme of a self-sacrificing or tortuous love (Soft As Chalk, Have One On Me, Monkey and Bear, California, Kingfisher, Only Skin, THIS song, Sawdust and Diamonds) loss {three little babes, Baby Birch, Again THIS song, a Pinlight Best} whimsy and travel {this side of the blue, Sadie, Bridges and Balloons, Swansea, Waltz of the 21st Lightborn, leaving the city, this side of the blue, Sprout and the bean, Good intentions paving company } usually by ship or sea. There's imagery of beauty and violence {scrape your knee it is only skin makes the sound of violins and when I cut your hair and leave the birds all of the trimmings, I'm the happiest woman among all woman} in the same lines at times. I wish I were organized enough to do a whole video essay but that's my take at least.
And finally, I think the story here is the diver isn't actually married to the wife, she's just in love with him, and he doesn't even know it. Like, he doesn't know who she is, she's just made a habit of watching him. He drowns one day and she drowns herself too. That's just my interpretation though and at various parts of the song I interpret it differently.
I'm not even saying this because the song is newer, but this is my favorite JN song by far (and that is a tough position to take from Monkey and Bear, which I adore). I love how the lyrics make me want to cry, but they are also vindictive, and the instrumentation evokes this as well. I can't wait for this to
+joelbellz Thank you! I was affraid I'm the only one who thinks this. I love the album version, but this one is so... It's just so much Joanna and some much Ys... and I think this version goes better with the story. It's more simple, but also more sincere.
+greynight111 pretty sure the lyrics are the same but it doesn't get any better than joanna and her harp. the arrangements are so extraneous on the Divers version
I have to keep convincing myself that this actually came out of planet earth... when I return there myself after 7.03. Extra terrestrial music like this was inconcievable to me before i came across Joanna. Language cannot describe what she does for me
There’s something about this audio that hits different than any other live or recorded version of divers! Dare I say it’s the best version of this song. But maybe that’s just the nostalgia talking
This song makes me want to float around in space forever with a deranged smile on my face, having an infinite heartgasm. Given the song was on repeat during all of this of course.
nice to hear this without additional accompaniment. i know she's performed this song during her string/keys incident tour a few years ago with just her harp but it's hard to get ahold of bootleg recordings of this song during that particular tour.
I miss the old Joanna too, but I have no idea what you're talking about with all this about her music being "stuffy and pretentious." She's just singing in a different way than she used to, in a different style. As she grows and changes as a person, her music grows and changes too. She is actually incapable of singing the way she used to because she injured it once when she sang that way for hours, and her voice was gone for a month. So please don't shoot her down for changing. It's offensive.
This hurts my brain. When she releases another album I will buy it, but I'm kind of afraid to listen to it. I can only assume that brain hemmorages are very uncomfortable.
+Matt Stephens-Rich You obviously weren't "forced". It was very well known that the music video would be premiered at selected theaters beforehand. If you didn't like it, don't go to the premier?
+Brendan Baker (BrendanGoesBang) That's funny, because there was no advertising for this music video before hand, and not a single person in the theater had a clue who the performer was. It was cut in the midst of the other movie previews once the theater went dark, and drew more laughter from the crowd than anything.
+Brendan Baker (BrendanGoesBang) I'm going to go out on a limb here, and say that I actually did not read Drag City before going to the movie theater to watch The Martian on it's opening day. No, putting a 7 minute music video of an artist majority of the audience has never heard of right before an oscar-nominated sci-fi adventure film is not a good idea.
I went through a phase where I just wrote and rewrote the words to this song in my notebook. I don't regret it.
that actually sounds very therapeutic and now i may do the same
"Tell me why is the pain of birth
Lighter borne than the pain of death"
These lines are amazing. I love this song.
Crazy to think that this was on the net, 3 years before Divers was released!
same with sapokanikan!!
Ever so glad she made me listen to the harp as an essential rock folk instrument.
I love how she has changed. I hope she keeps changing too.

This is the only version of this song I love to listen to! Such a beautiful song
"I ain't sayin' that I loved you first but I loved you best." Ahhh those words are magic! Simply beautiful!

sounds amazing,I wish this version was on the album
Unglaublich fragile und hochtalentierte Künstlerin!
This is honestly better than the album version
+joelbellz couldn't agree with you more

+joelbellz I think I didn't mention lyrics at all. It was all about the instruments :-)
+joelbellz Yes, but this doesn't make me as resentful as album version of 'Leaving the City'. Such beautiful song damaged so much by producer :/
Was at this show! incredible performance
I have to keep convincing myself that this actually came out of planet earth... when I return there myself after 7.03. Extra terrestrial music like this was inconcievable to me before i came across Joanna. Language cannot describe what she does for me
I also enjoy the balladic lyrics that are like Ys, with the instrumentation of eastern influence like HOOM or MEM
So glad I was able to see this live
This is so, so much more powerful than the album version. The pacing, the simplicity. The album version is drab and heavy in comparison.
I will listen again and again till I know it by heart.

I'm already obsessed with this song.

I would change the name of this to "divers" which is the actual title but I've completely forgotten the log in details for this account...
+Bloody Twins Then shutup
+Nibbly Nobbler unnecessarily mean comment.
Nibbly Nobbler Literally what was the point in your reply? I was just letting people know I can't change the title.
+Bloody Twins To me it's good you did *not* change the title. So I could see at once it's the old version. And that's why I watch it right now! ;-)
Only the cold can give me goosebumps like Newsom can.
beautiful
Exquisite!
goosebumps!
It's from a live performance c. 2012. It's yet unreleased on an album.
probably the best out of divers
*weeping* genius....
También me gusta más esta versión que la de estudio. Su voz suena más dulce.
totally agree my friend :)
totalmente de acuerdo, extraño a esa Joanna Newsom más entregada & liberada..
essa harpa me derrete fácil demais, ta doido
not yet

I am a huge Joanna Newsom fan but this song is new to me. Can anybody tell me where this treasure is from?
This soulds futuristic, not a nature sound like her other songs.
Damn\:
This hurts my brain. When she releases another album I will buy it, but I'm kind of afraid to listen to it. I can only assume that brain hemmorages are very uncomfortable.
haha my new favorite word
Is there a studio version of this song?
there is now!!
Pulchritudinous!
i bet sheee could use language to describe it pretty well...
I'm
... Be released
kopelara
better bring a box of kleenex!
Was forced to watch the music video for this as a movie preview. Really not my taste.
was this at the Alamo Draft House?
No, Gateway Film Center in Columbus, Ohio.

Her new material, if you want to compare it to her other albums, does lean towards Y's.
