Maybe it's just me but it is as if this little guy is doing it's best to prove that all he wants to do is his job again. "Just one more chance; that's all that I need, you'll see!"
Brilliant ! three replacement tubes and a speaker and the radio still works. Great American quality. Amazing Capacitors and coils in that little radio.
Of the 100's of radio fix up/restore/repair videos on uTube this has got to be my favorite. Captures the fun of fiddling with these things Thanks Shango!
This is a testimony to the simplicity, durability and resilience of the AA5, after sitting in the elements (probably) for four decades, 40 years! I find it rather interesting that the multi-section filter capacitor didn't fail.
The point where you placed the box against the speaker coil is exactly why I love to restore old electronic equipment.. It amazes me just how much abuse components can take and still function.
You are amazing! My wife and I especially love your brand of sarcastic humor. She knows nothing about electronics but sits through your vids giggling every time you crack a joke...
Impressive, but not as much as that rusty Zenith TV from time ago. That filter cap is stunning, it managed to survive somehow. Perhaps the rain falling on it kept hydrating it so it didn't go dry. I had a speaker that was in a shape like that once, and I gave it a new cone made of thick paper just for the heck of it. It turned out unexpectedly good, I even put it back on it's original radio.
Tough radio , reminds me of some of the stories I've heard about how the radio equipment the military uses can take so much abuse and keep on working .
Truly amazing for something that has sat out for so long with not much being done it works Great American Quality built to last longer than todays junk....
I would have never thought a radio left outside for that long would not just go up in flames or the filter cap explode when plugged in. the thing works great after a little love. Good job!
Yes! Do it. Watching the video at 1.5 speed. Thinking with the low audio level, "Did he cut the voice coil wires?" Then I figured no way it's not open. Then it's playing. So cool. Shango University. Great fun. Happy New Year!
Oh man you are awesome! This is a poem from start to finish. I have met people as banged as that radio and their speakers are still working. This is a great modern metaphor. A "still life" in a canvas. Thanks keep them coming!
Man, you are living dangerously by connecting that bumblebee capacitor directly to 120 VAC! :-) I was surprised to see how this well this thing was working after a minimal amount of work. I was also impressed by how well the gun lube cleaned the corrosion off the variable capacitor. Finally, I learned that the glass-metal seals in vacuum tubes are not waterproof.
well - Im shocked - wow - up here in MA - I don't think something could sit outside more than a few years and still be made to function again - I guess I shouldn't be surprised - they dug those ET Atari games out of a similarly arid landfill - and they were playable - you need to find an old desert landfill from the 50s and see what turns up
Hey Shangoo66, Cool, it works. That's still a perfectly great speaker, re-cone that sucker. Amazing that thing still works. Excellent post nuke radio, I'd keep it. Take care, C.
My parents had that clock radio. Sound was excellent! Tuning capacitor is a precision work of art! Clock probably still works. I sayveak tube = low sound.
Wow how many times do you get zaped working on these old radios thats been in the rain for years I got zaped just by touching the antina on an old tube radio And i mean ZAPED!!! Its amazing what you do with old tv s and radio s Lol that old speaker still works I geuse tou could call it a box speaker Very cool and funny Love your vidios keep em coming
GEEZUS did you see the fangs on that petrified spider @ 2:10? She probably kept any repair personnel away from working on that radio for 20+ years. The tube box held up against the old speaker should get the Nobel prize for electrodynamics!
Always love these videos. Perhaps we should store all NOS paper filter caps in a garbage dump... to prolong their lives of course! Rest assured if the nuclear apocalypse does happen I can always unearth a few of these all american 5's, make a transmitter outta one, and amuse myself with getting the rest of them going again.
+robot797 Theyre not actually tbh, they are very unreliable and contain lethal exposed voltages, especially here in the uk they run on 250v 13 to 20amps
Synthematix i found out that tube circuits almost never need atention for example my pcl86 amp (own design and build) its running on the original tubes that i put in around 4 years ago and the tubes still test 80% good
Keep that radio and it will come in handy when the World Wide Web goes down.............I could hear The Dennis Prager Show and Mark Levin coming in on 870 AM Los Angeles loud and clear! That same "The Answer" programming comes through on a sister station 590 AM KTIE San Bernardino. That is a Telechron clock in the radio and it was a precision time-piece. The Rotor which runs the clock is sealed but it can be brought back to life using certain methods of restoration and if not used in this clock, then on another Telechron Clock, as they were hand made and sealed in generally cooper. The Rotor in the clock if polished would be a bright copper, and not fake, but real copper. The later Rotors were not made as well and were not sealed in copper.
Well you got the chassis going, but the case is going to need a little work. I've heard of speaker boxes but never a box speaker till now. Good work, too funny and very entertaining
I've said it before and I'll say it again, you are really something! I enjoyed this video. To take a unit in this initial condition and hear it play is wonderful. Always learn too. How about plug in IF cans? Pretty cool. The segment showing the speaker voice coil is cool too. Why is the filter cap not bad? Go figure. Great job, love all your video's. keep up the good work. (fun)
Three leads on output transformer primary? That's a "humdinger" feedback tap to eliminate hum. Do I see a bumblebee in there? I find it hard to believe that a glass metal seal would allow water through but not air, aren't water molecules larger than air?
Fun to see how dryish location let them "survive" for that long. Guess that's the positive side of not using PCB's that can parish. Guess means when I build my PA0FRI linear it might survive years to come in just dry surroundings. Will be my first real tube project.
There are 2 things I would like to see from you: 1 get a scuba gear and go on a wreck, recover a CRT tv from that wreck and show it to us how it's inside and if can be fixed.and 2 take an old tv with vacuum tubes, make a new modern PCB using the original schematics but with vacuum tubes and new caps, new resistor, etc...
It was driving me insane because it sounded so familiar, but I finally figured out what the tiny sputter of sound at 7:35 is... The Who - Won't Get Fooled Again
Maybe it's just me but it is as if this little guy is doing it's best to prove that all he wants to do is his job again. "Just one more chance; that's all that I need, you'll see!"
Yeah I get this feeling from a lot of stuff he resurrects too.
Shame a lot of it gets parted out or thrown away
This was worth the viewing just to see that zombie of a speaker buzz to life!
In a Terminator/Fallout future, this man will be a god!
Lol
Brilliant ! three replacement tubes and a speaker and the radio still works. Great American quality. Amazing Capacitors and coils in that little radio.

Thumbs up for the tube box speaker.
👍
This is a testimony to the simplicity, durability and resilience of the AA5, after sitting in the elements (probably) for four decades, 40 years! I find it rather interesting that the multi-section filter capacitor didn't fail.
This restoration is almost as astounding as the rusty Zenith TV you got going! Cannot believe that power supply electrolytic.
This may be one of the best Shango videos ever. It defies belief.
This radio shows the craftsmanship that went into electronics back in the day.
The point where you placed the box against the speaker coil is exactly why I love to restore old electronic equipment.. It amazes me just how much abuse components can take and still function.
Can't beat an old tube radio.Great quality.None made today are even close.
i love these videos , real laugh, sure brings me back memories fixing radios and tvs up here in Canada. real laugh ,, great radios .. last for ever.
You are amazing! My wife and I especially love your brand of sarcastic humor. She knows nothing about electronics but sits through your vids giggling every time you crack a joke...
That's just amazing. My dumb has been founded.
Andrewausfa well my flab has been gasted
This has got to be your best video EVER, to think that a radio that has been through THAT much shit, just mind blowing!
Amasing that old radio could be brought back to life😊😊😊
Impressive, but not as much as that rusty Zenith TV from time ago.
That filter cap is stunning, it managed to survive somehow. Perhaps the rain falling on it kept hydrating it so it didn't go dry.

+Highpoint211 TH-cam videos of German WW2 military radios that are working.
The spider in vital in this circuit.
Unbelievable, now I'm impressed man. More cow bell I mean more video radio rescue. Old tube radios are the best, got to love them.
Wow! Just wow! Just shows technology advances may not always be better....just more profitable.
Truly amazing for something that has sat out for so long with not much being done it works Great American Quality built to last longer than todays junk....
So much awe. You are a unique mind. Thanks for sharing these experiences.
I would have never thought a radio left outside for that long would not just go up in flames or the filter cap explode when plugged in. the thing works great after a little love. Good job!
Amazing that the electrolytic is still good. Also, a GE without SMD is a bit of a miracle.
I love the deadpan sarcasm. "Audiophile speaker"
Cool! I enjoyed watching that old speaker trying to work! Amazing that radio worked after just one tube and a speaker!
So, are going to re-cone that fine speaker? A little paint here and there and you have a fine little radio.
That speaker wants to LIVE!
Yes! Do it. Watching the video at 1.5 speed. Thinking with the low audio level, "Did he cut the voice coil wires?" Then I figured no way it's not open. Then it's playing. So cool. Shango University. Great fun. Happy New Year!
@@KameraShy insert SpongeBob I want to live!! meme here.
Yes, it's indeed better than a Crosley.
+radiotvphononut back then, a GE clock radio was considered as cheap shit.
I am with you better than a Crosley it is
Still better than a modern Crosley
tell me about it.
you sure are the MacGyver of electronics.
i thought that was bigclive
Oh man you are awesome! This is a poem from start to finish. I have met people as banged as that radio and their speakers are still working. This is a great modern metaphor. A "still life" in a canvas. Thanks keep them coming!

looks like an ebay special
"Vintage! Rare! Fully Restored!"
I never would have imagined in a hundred years that would have worked. No fire or smoke either!
It's something called "American made".
Nice spider symmetry between the chassis shot and the closing speaker fade!
Good old times quality, nothing is better than that!
A very fine example of your comprehensive knowledge to get this gem up and running again. Loved the "spittin' speaker" Thank's!
.that was cool the speaker still wanted to work
That's amazingly impressive, hats off to the tough little thing! Hard to believe that speaker was still trying it's best after all the abuse.
Unbelievable! Great video again! Can't believe that thing played with just a couple of new tubes.
I have to say you are better than the Professor was on Giligins Island. You can get anything working. That was fun to watch.
Those old tube radios were built like tanks back in the day.
Hey Shangoo66, Cool, it works. That's still a perfectly great speaker, re-cone that sucker. Amazing that thing still works. Excellent post nuke radio, I'd keep it. Take care, C.
WOW!! Mad Max's radio!! Post apocalyptic radio goodness! All kidding aside this truly amazing!! I would have never thought!
My parents had that clock radio.
Sound was excellent!
Tuning capacitor is a precision work of art! Clock probably still works.

Well i be ,desert grit and all ,a real collectors item ,enjoyed the entertainment well done ,Look forward to more.
That's amazing! try letting a Crosley sit out in the desert for 30+ years. You wouldn't even be able to ID it.
I doubt something made out of 100% plastic would get damaged
loved this one too!! hope you see these remarks from viewers

From trash to treasure, well working. Very cool that these old radios are so hard to kill. Awesome video
American made quality, take that China!
Emerson V m
Very cool! Would be nice to see it backup and running! I see you had your obligatory airplane and siren in this video! :)
Wow, no smoke & Fire. I'm impressed that you got this working & I knew you would because your a natural born genius, mate. 😀👍🏻
That was great! Zombie speaker @12:55.
Wow, what a video! I loved the speaker trying to still work without a cone.
BRAVO. love the rolex timepeice

and this is why tubes are so much better then modern stuff
+robot797 Theyre not actually tbh, they are very unreliable and contain lethal exposed voltages, especially here in the uk they run on 250v 13 to 20amps

OK that was awesome when you got the original speaker putting out audio!
Replace the speaker and 3D print a new case for it!

Soak the clock with that gun oil, and I bet it'll work again.
I think the voice coil might be rubbing....
Good job on getting that old dessert radio going again!
What no SMD?? Great to see an old school set getting a second chance.
Good job from the UK
And to think this was tossed out as no more than junk. And I bet the previous owner did just that instead of getting it fixed.
@@Fridelain But back in the day there were repair shops.
Wow...That old speaker's motto must be, "Never say die."
most people woiud have just left this were you found it, but to see it working thats nice
11:30 Fort McMurray fire.... wow... that brings back memories.
Shango is a radio god. Put any radio in front of Shango, even a dump ground find, and he breathes life back in to it.
All American Fives are hard to kill! Nice demo, thanks.
Man Shango,,, Dr Frankenstein don't have s**t on you. Back from the dead,, oh yeah.
that deserves a custom Cabinet or either finding another original cabinet that's an awesome story to go with that set
Radio back to life from "dead" :)
Speaker starts speak without memrane.
I love seeing something so ugly roar back to life after over 40 years or more
LOL I could not stop laughing at your nice quality speaker in that radio.. UGH OH! failure. plop!

Great video! Could you show how to re-cone a speaker? Will you work on any other abandoned tvs from the old mining town?
amazing! now that good old american craftsmanship there.
You're a mad man! Love it!
Amazing that radio works! Would a radio of the same vintage with transistors still work?
+Edward Morris i doubt that. transistor equiptment has much less tolerance for component value change.
Que video mas bonito todo esta bonito ..
IIRC that center tap has something to do with a kind of hum bucking function.
Great fun! Thanks for the video. Thumbs up.
