EPO is apparently used to treat kindly problems. Remember 4 months ago Lu appeared as a skinny rake having lost all of his size and strength after a long “training break”. My speculative guess is he had problems with his kidneys so they took him off the juice, he lost all of his gains and as he was starting his comeback, they started putting him on EPO to help treat his kidney issues. That’s what makes sense to me…
Lmfao EPO of ALL things. Tbh if he was on EPO to me that shows he must been cycling on everything and the kitchen sink, and this just happened to be the one thing that didn’t clear.
I believe in the sacrificial lamb theory. China has a team of young super soldiers and testing agencies needed to at least pretend like they were trying to catch them. So China offered up their aging star with a non androgen.
He’s their star athlete, surely it’d make sense to pop someone who was on the B team who’s never even made the podium in that case? If it is an inside job, I could see it potentially being due to some conflict between the different teams/coaches, à la Liao Hui.
@@samj8932 yeah, I was trying to talk myself into maybe he actually got popped but, China has just been too positive for too long and popping someone on the B team would just even more suspicious if they were doped up with steroids out the ass. Seems internal or basically told Lu that they couldn’t take him to the Olympics and him off with a nice “take the hit for us “package.

I never thought I’d see the day Lu gets popped :( I was just only speaking to some guys about the Chinese teams doping practices earlier today so this video comes as an even bigger shock as I, and I’m sure many others, thought they were untouchable at this point. Still, EPO? I’m yet to watch the entire video but surely it’s some kind of inside job or something else being misidentified as EPO? I thought if one these guys ever got caught it’d be some obscure anabolic which never made it past animal trials in the 50s, or at least something along those lines.
I can only imagine using EPO if he needs extreme endurance during his training regime. Still, a very, very strange compound to use on weightlifting.. Does anyone know any other weightlifter who's popped for EPO?
@@The1juhi EPO is pretty common in weight class sports. Staying super lean, as most of the Chinese team are, is usually really bad for performance. EPO counteracts those disadvantages. Lots of MMA guys use it.
Microdosing EPO is a big thing in cycling (still i believe). I wonder if they messed up the dose here. Typically microdosing allows you to get through the sleep window (11pm to 6am) where you can't be tested and come out on the other side still "clean".
@@Anton-xm8xs i'm not sure about weightlifting, but there definitely is in cycling. The rule being that you can't disturb athletes in the middle of the night as disturbing sleep (especially in competition) can affect the outcome.
China gives up a big name, which gives them years of grace to keep doing what they're doing, IWF gets that same big name, which satisfies Olympic committee and saves it as Olympic sport. Lv is not only three time champion, but also the saviour of weightlifting!
Let's kick weightlifting out of the olympics and establish a new untested federation parallel to the IWF like in powerlifting. And once we reach a new age of enlightenment peds will just be allowed in general.
Coach Greg: "He's natty bc I could out squat and deadlift him back in my natty days". Also Coach Greg: Sumo deadlifts w/ straps and low bar barely parallel squats.

Might as well post here too, sorry for being such a bother in the livestream. I have been following the sport for going on 17 years and had never heard the stories about 20+ riders dropping dead between 87-92 but they were not big name athletes or anything - most of them were young and amateurs. Still pretty insane though. The story about waking up in the middle of the night to ride I had heard before, from the book about Marco Pantani, but didn't know of any high figure deaths.
The implications here could go one of two ways. Either state doping in its current form is no longer possible as the ITA/WADA are finally making a dent in upholding their principles of safe and fair sport. OR, the political motives for sacrificial lambs just skyrocketed. Some of our favorite lifters will be pushing "golden era" numbers while some of our other favorites test positive, paradoxically thwarting the idea of clean and fair sport even more. Of course, no one likes to see Lu get popped. But those wider implications are gonna leave fans torn. Either one isn't necessarily good or bad for the popularity and longevity of weightlifting. We all would like to see athletes compete on a level playing field, but also want to see big weights on the bar. It may come down to what you value more
