I love that your "back in my day" bit is that "googling things was much harder!" Ya dang kid! Back in my day, I walked FIFTEEN miles in the snow for fabrics; uphill both ways, and I LIKED it!
I think posing would be a GREAT new Cosplay 101 topic! Or maybe more about sewing? For example pattern making or what types of fabric work for what kind of project. Also this video was SUPER helpful
Two questions: A.What are you thoughts on buying cosplay? B.I know you don't crossplay, but is it possible for you to do a video on it and proper binding methods. There are still too many people who insist on the ace bangage method
She's done a few crossplays - Haru for example: I think the best method would be through the chest binder method, they are safer and much more comfortable than ace bandages. Check amazon or else a nifty site called "Underworks" for binders. Good luck friend!
I... do crossplay, though, haha! I have several videos that involve me crossplaying as Haru, and my Sugawara crossplay was recently in one of my ALA vlogs. I use a shapewear cami that I cut the straps off and fold over twice, so it's the width of a bandeau top. But if you can afford the investment, I highly recommend looking at Underworks or T-Kingdom binders! Doing a binding video isn't something I'm exactly comfortable demonstrating (for obvious reasons). But I can do a general discussion about it, maybe!
If you could do a discussion on what type of binders and methods you do, it would be a life saver. I'm actually trying to do a Haru cosplay and really want to know what you did and used to bind shirtless... if that makes sense...? It would be a great help, thanks!
Can you do a general video about fabric choices? I know it's super vague and pretty costume-specific, but I always have a ton of issues on what fabric would drap nicely, what fabric would sew easily, or how shiny a fabric is. And there are so many choices when you walk into a fabric store, it's pretty overwhelming. I'd like to stay whelmed.
I've only ever actually cosplayed once and that was last year (I plan to do it again because it's so much fun!) and it honestly never crossed my mind to ask another cosplayer for direct help/vague questions. I just like the idea of staring at a picture of the character I want to cosplay and studying their outfit and then only looking at pictures of other people who cosplayed them to inspire what's the best root for me to create it. I'd much rather think of the best way possible for me rather than what worked best for others!
Awesome video. I am fine with googling, just struggling deciding on which character for my first costume. So many in my mind. I am sure that I will decide soon.
As a novice cosplayer (i've been cosplaying for a year and sewed and experiemented with a few parts of cosplaying and made a cosplay ((pretty much)) from scratch) i can say i pretty much just googled everything for most aspects of the costume, and from the resources and what i knew i could manage, chose what worked best. And it turned out! These videos really helped me start and be confident with cosplay, thanks so much!
Thank you so much for making this video! I will forever link it to all the people who write me with the question "How do I make a cosplay?" :D Thank you for saving my time you awesome lady!
One thing that wasn't mentioned that I use as a good resource is going to the library. Most libraries have websites and searching for cosplay or craft books can be super useful, especially with sewing techniques for beginners. I have also asked people who work at local fabric stores, and they can usually help when it comes to what fabric. As Squid Vicious mentioned, Cosplanner is great, and if you show what you've put in there to a craft/fabric store employee, they're usually good at finding what you need.
Thank you so much Sirene! This was very helpful to me and I appreciate it very much! ^^ All your cosplay 101's have been a big help to me and hopefully I'll be able to be a decent cosplayer soon from watching all these lessons by you. :)
Just commenting this here for those who need it. ^-^ There's a social media app called Cosplay Amino, and I find that app pretty helpful for advice. A lot of people post tutorials, and there are forms where you can ask for help or just some tips to keep in mind for pretty much anything you'd need to know.
this this this this and MORE THIS. even though I really don't need these cosplay 101 videos, I just love them so much and frequently share them on my cosplay page for newbies :D
I'm making my first cosplay. I'm going to be rin okumura from blue exorcist and I decided to make the sword and sword cover by myself but I've never sewed before and I was really worried I'd mess up but now I'm really proud of it. It's really fun in my opinion to at least try to make it your self before you ask other people because you may surprise your self at what you can do.
Thank you so much I am doing a Samurai outfit and you just helped me with it thank you soooo much I wish I had found this sooner (been researching for about a month ) thank you
it's kinda funny how i haven't even started cosplaying yet and i already know that you should be specific with questions... and by the way..i would like to say that your cosplay 101 series has really helped me start to plan out how i will jump into the cosplay world.. so thanks MangoSirene.
I am one that just heard of cosplaytutorial. I am however, a master of search engines and youtube vids. Seriously, I can narrow down results faster than anybody I know. Thank you though, for saving me hours of research. ;A; I wish I knew this earlier.
Thank you so much for this video! It's so accurate it's unbelievable hahaha. I've been working on a P'Li cosplay from book 3 of Legend of Korra (which I'll be wearing to Katsucon, I hope I see you there!) and I can't count how many people have asked general/vague questions about it. The biggest part of the costume is the wig so I just assume they mean that then they don't and it's just kind of :/. Your Cosplay 101 videos are great and although I've been cosplaying for a few years now I always learn something new when I watch them! Thanks for making this series!
Mango! I am so happy I found your You Tube channel! I have done cosplaying for years and now that it's suddenly cool (I personally blame Big Bang Theory) everyone is doing it and there are so many new online stores and resources so I am thinking of upgrading some of my earlier attempts - I watched this with so much understanding and interest! Thank you for giving it to us straight and being supportive of others who cosplay! ~M x
Thanks Sirene!!!!!!!! Believe it or not but I specifically watch this video to get some tips on what questions to ask other Cosplayers as I've notice they can be a bit annoyed. You also inspires me to go to an anime convention from your video about how to make anime friends!!!!!!!! Sirene I'm forever in your dept!!!!!!!
Great video! ^_^ Thankfully I never got the really vague questions on how to make stuff. I've done the ask other cosplayers for what they did but that's usually because I usually cosplay the more rarer characters so finding anyone whose done it makes it so much easier to understanding how a certain part is done.
I would like to add that Pinterest is amazing for gathering references and tutorials! I usually make one board for each of my costumes and gather relevant tutorials etc. it makes me feel all organised and it's SO EASY to use!
I try to do my best to do my own research so instead of asking questions like "How do you make this?", I can ask more detailed questions for certain details that maybe I can't find. I've pretty much figured out how to make a lot of my current costume.
I'm so glad that I found your channel I'm learning so much now And I'm regretting that I didn't find your channel sooner Good thing I haven't cosplayed yet
I /was/ working on Batgirl 2014 during winter and your pictures were very helpful! I put it on hold tho because leather sucks lol. But yes, research is a long but super important process that I wish more newer cosplayers would do. Learning how to do research is good in general.
Thank you for that video, cleared up a lot since I'm a beginner cosplayer. I want to do a Raven costume and will need to decide on the fabric for the cape, hopefully one of your sources can help me ;)) Once again, great video, thank you and have a wonderful day !
to be honest, I relied on you alot when you were making your starfire costume. and recently I found out that my Beatrice dress from Over The Garden Wall is actually a regency dress. whats funny is that when I bought the pattern, I had no idea it was a regency dress pattern until I googled "regency dresses" and found the exact same pattern on google images
Not sure if you've already made one but could you make a detailed video of resin casting? I looked for yet resources but I'm too stupid to do it right ...
I had an open question to any cosplayer or mango if you have the time. sorry if this has already been asked but I believe you have done several weapon props in the past and I was wondering. I'm making a scythe prop for a black butler character I wanted to cosplay and I just read the con rules for the one im going to and it said that props using wood and hard PVC plastic may or may not get confiscated. But the thing is, my prop is made from both and has a mock "edge" should I finish the prop out and cross my fingers? Or should I look into maybe silicone casting or making it from foam or worbla? I would love to be able to keep the prop as it is if at all possible but it kind of defeats the purpose if it doesn't make it past the door. Any thoughts?
I love your videos and have been binge watching them right now and have been wondering. Do you think just not wearing makeup, even eye-stuff is bad. I don't like wearing makeup and don't like buying it and have told myself that I will definitely try to wear makeup if the character definitely needs it, like Loki in his jötunn form or Grimmjow from bleach. But for cosplays where the character doesn't really wear anything that I'd have to have I kind of Don't think of wearing anything. And sometimes I feel like I might get judged on that or that I'm doing a haveassed job. What's your opinion? Thanks
I think she covered her opinion of makeup in a previous video... I think she said that makeup helps photos look good and that it really helps the whole look. Personally, I don't like it either, but I'm willing to do it if it makes it look better.
I've been researching my cosplay and I've only found 4 pictures of that character and I can't even find anyone who has cosplayed the character. The character I chose was Kirito from Sword Art Online but I chose the version of Kirito at the very beginning of SAO. The armor looks like a leather material but I was wondering if you knew of any other materials that have a similar look but might be easier to work with in case of messing up.
How would you buy fabric if you cannot feel it first? I only have Joann fabric and Hancock around me and they have the same pleather that you recommended not buying.
This video was so helpful! I've just taking on the task of making a Natsu Cross-play, and I was really nervous, as I've never sewn anything before! I've looked for tutorials and stuff but could never find anything useful, I guess I was looking in the wrong places ^-^
I just realized that growing up as a Civil War reenactment her, and also my mom sewing for me for various other reasons, has made me decent at what I do. I just threw together and Elsa outfit for a birthday party and an Elsa outfit for figure skating. I made my own shoes, I started selling shoes on Etsy because it was fun, and I found a wig on Amazon that I took a chance on, and it actually worked out really well once I styled it properly. I had no idea that any of this was difficult. Thanksfor laying it out to me, because I may not understand if somebody looks at me and goes how do you make this or that? I might find that really confusing and be like Hall? The first time I wanted to make a tutu, I just looked it up on Google. I didn't get it before that this might all be confusing but now I really do. I also watch your videos way too often to not subscribe I'm sorry I haven't subscribed yet I'm subbing now
In need of cosplay help. I'm being Goddess Hylian (Zelda from Skyward Sword in the white dress) but I searched EVERY WHERE online and have no luck finding the instructions for the dress. The con. is April 17-19 I already have the wig, elf ears, the harp, and getting the sandles from a payless then using shoe paint to paint them to look like Hylians sandles, also have the jewelry But yet to find the dress nor the intrusions to make it. What do you suggest? It does look simple but I have not once made a dress before nor any clothing of that sort. At the moment I'm suggesting my Aunt to make it since shes been making dresses for a long time.
I asked another cosplayer where she did get fabric lace or did she really made it on her own or probably with help. And that was before three years and still no anserwer. I made other more easier cosplays but was obsessed that they cant say (don't know) I bought it on ebay or my grandmother made it for me. I mean it's no judgement to say someone had an idea or helped me eather, is it? I still can't find the right label and I really don't want to learn how to crochet for that... 😅 I asked fabric shops and they say they are special fabrics to cut out but not where I can get it and how I can paint it... When I see on ebay that fabric I search for dying but there was no result...so when I need green one but there is only white, black and bright pink I could just paint it with acrylic but will it hold? Idk Yesterday I found a tutorial how to make 3 DIY shoes with fabric laces. Everything is in the discription but not the fabric lace. So I watched the full video and when the one woman asked the other woman where to get that fabric lace she said only "I'm sure all guys here have some of that at home." 😑 I was so angry about that...
I feel really fortunate that I discovered the IMT group. Like, millions of vloggers in the world, and I was lucky enough to end up watching (almost exclusively as far as vloggers go), Solo, Courtoon and you! And sometimes Chinasaur...but she always seems like she hates vlogging. Haha
OMG, thank you so much! I always do some research, but, to me, the problem is the large quantity of information. But I am one of the "luck ones" here in Brazil, since I can understand English. A lot of brazillian cosplayers on the majority of the pages can't =[
I've been cosplaying for 5 years(officially, yes. Practical, no). And I've collected sooo many tutorials, reference pictures and so on, on pinterest, which I actually would recommend. There's going to be alot of not that helpfull stuff when you search there, BUT it's an amazing site to save tutorials and stuff in folders. I love it. Just wanted to share that with everyone :3! *if some of the stuff i wrote didn't make sense: I don't speak english as my native(?) language*
I have two questions.... 1. How do you feel about changing a character's gender for cosplaying? 2. How do you feel about someone who cosplays several people from the same anime? Thanks. Your video's are so fun and helpful
Got herr from IMT and HOLY you're so freakin awesome!!! I love your Barbra Gordon Batgirl cosplay!!! Wish I could go to cons and cosplay like you but my parents won't let me... 😭😭😭
I've only ever asked another cosplayer for information on something specific they did on their costume. I'm usually very good at research.. but then I procrastinate and nothing ever gets done XD
i am trying to create a cosplay from concept art of ruby timeskip help ps. i have done as much research as possible i need patterns or modifiable patterns for blouse the weapon what material it has to be light but be weak enough that if someone was hit repeatedly it would break before them it also needs to be non porous and as cheap as possible
Anyone know were i can find a guide on sheik, from the Legend of Zelda, i cant find anything just two or three photos. I´m trying to go for the feminine model because it seemed easier. Thanks :) Btw great video xD
I’m doing a kokichi ouma cosplay and I have a few fabric bases to use, idk if I should use the thinner or thicker fabrics because I’m going to a summer con. His outfit seems complicated-ish and I’m using buttons on the fabric and I’m afraid it might rip while I sew in the buttons, also another quick question is, what type of fabric brands do you commonly use?
I just have one question for this video. What are you gonna search for. Like I am serching 1 houre for it sometimes and I do not find anything. I think it is beacouse I am searching for the name of the person I am trying to find information about. You do not have to anvser it. I am just asking you beacouse I do not really feel I can ask any of my friends. And I think you will give me the anvser I need.
this need to be reposted again or make a post and link this video cause DAMN this is needed. I dont have an issue helping but when you did not even bother to look first and expect me to do research for you NEGATIVE GHOST RIDER THE PATTERN IS FULL!
That batgirl question... just go with sarcastically short. "How did you make that costume?" "I sewed it together"
I love that your "back in my day" bit is that "googling things was much harder!"
Ya dang kid!
"google till your eyes bleed"
still true, even today.
still stands to time
*bows down* Mango you are the queen of cosplay. Thank you for the help. I love the blonde hair. I'm considering dying it blonde as well
Two questions: A.What are you thoughts on buying cosplay? B.I know you don't crossplay, but is it possible for you to do a video on it and proper binding methods. There are still too many people who insist on the ace bangage method

As for buying cosplays - there's absolutely nothing wrong with it. End of story~!
If you could do a discussion on what type of binders and methods you do, it would be a life saver. I'm actually trying to do a Haru cosplay and really want to know what you did and used to bind shirtless... if that makes sense...? It would be a great help, thanks!

Mangosirene you are my cosplay god^^ you got me to start cosplaying and now I've been doing it for over a year keep making videos your awesome!
There's a social media app called Cosplay Amino, and I find that app pretty helpful for advice. A lot of people post tutorials, and there are forms where you can ask for help or just some tips to keep in mind for pretty much anything you'd need to know.
There’s a bunch of different Aminos for other things too! I’m in Sewing Amino, but I didn’t know there was a cosplay amino too ^w^
this this this this and MORE THIS.
even though I really don't need these cosplay 101 videos, I just love them so much and frequently share them on my cosplay page for newbies :D
YES! The resurrection of your "Cosplay 101"! I'm so excited to see what else you have in store
I just started making my first cosplay and this was super helpful! Thanks so much for posting!
Thnx! I want to start cosplaying and I know how to research stuff now, thanks for this video!
"How did you make your Batgirl costume?"
"By sewing fabric together"
I'm making my first cosplay. I'm going to be rin okumura from blue exorcist and I decided to make the sword and sword cover by myself but I've never sewed before and I was really worried I'd mess up but now I'm really proud of it. It's really fun in my opinion to at least try to make it your self before you ask other people because you may surprise your self at what you can do.
I love this series and your hair! You always give such great information. ♡
Thank you so much I am doing a Samurai outfit and you just helped me with it thank you soooo much I wish I had found this sooner (been researching for about a month ) thank you

You are such an inspiration to cosplayers everywhere! 😇
I am one that just heard of cosplaytutorial. I am however, a master of search engines and youtube vids. Seriously, I can narrow down results faster than anybody I know. Thank you though, for saving me hours of research. ;A; I wish I knew this earlier.
thank you for sharing your tips! this really helps! youre awesome!
Thank you so much for this video! It's so accurate it's unbelievable hahaha. Your Cosplay 101 videos are great and although I've been cosplaying for a few years now I always learn something new when I watch them! Thanks for making this series!

Thank you for giving it to us straight and being supportive of others who cosplay! ~M x
also, rather than asking 8574839793 cosplayers if a certain wig seller is good check reviews. lots of cosplayers love to review the wigs they buy.
Thanks Sirene!!!!!!!! Believe it or not but I specifically watch this video to get some tips on what questions to ask other Cosplayers as I've notice they can be a bit annoyed. Cosplay 101 idea: intro to patterns (sewing)
Thank you for this video I am still fairly new to cosplay and love making things on my own
Great video! ^_^ Thankfully I never got the really vague questions on how to make stuff. I've done the ask other cosplayers for what they did but that's usually because I usually cosplay the more rarer characters so finding anyone whose done it makes it so much easier to understanding how a certain part is done.
What a great video and thanks for all the tips.
FINALLY a video about this!
1:40 what if it's a character that only appeared in one episode of a show that said episode came out less than two months ago?
I would like to add that Pinterest is amazing for gathering references and tutorials! I usually make one board for each of my costumes and gather relevant tutorials etc. it makes me feel all organised and it's SO EASY to use!
I try to do my best to do my own research so instead of asking questions like "How do you make this?", I can ask more detailed questions for certain details that maybe I can't find. I've pretty much figured out how to make a lot of my current costume.
Thank you so much! This is quite helpful. I appreciate the video. :D
I'm so glad that I found your channel I'm learning so much now
And I'm regretting that I didn't find your channel sooner
Good thing I haven't cosplayed yet
Great video and website! Thanks for the heads up on dies and fonts for a beginning cosplayer!
Thx Mango. This was very helpful!!! Love your videos. They make me think. Hopefully I can work on my skills to be handy at making costumes.
I /was/ working on Batgirl 2014 during winter and your pictures were very helpful! I put it on hold tho because leather sucks lol. But yes, research is a long but super important process that I wish more newer cosplayers would do. Learning how to do research is good in general.
And here I'm trying to tie my hair like you did (My hair's too short ;-;)
OMG! You're the cosplayer who did that impressive Chel costume! That was awesome!
YEAH YOU'RE BACK :D
"Ain't nobody got time for that." I like it.
Thank you for that video, cleared up a lot since I'm a beginner cosplayer. I want to do a Raven costume and will need to decide on the fabric for the cape, hopefully one of your sources can help me ;))
Once again, great video, thank you and have a wonderful day !
I actually have seen someone do a cosplay of concept art that was revealed at the convention it was shown at and bring it out the very next day
Wait.....I have been searching for it the old and long way then?! 0-0
I can definitely relate to those vague questions when it comes to my drawings.
Pls do a Cosplay 101: crossplaying
If you want to xD
to be honest, I relied on you alot when you were making your starfire costume. and recently I found out that my Beatrice dress from Over The Garden Wall is actually a regency dress. whats funny is that when I bought the pattern, I had no idea it was a regency dress pattern until I googled "regency dresses" and found the exact same pattern on google images
Cool Vid Mango! :)
could you make a vid on working with spandex in general?
Not sure if you've already made one but could you make a detailed video of resin casting? I looked for yet resources but I'm too stupid to do it right ...

I am making a P-body costume from potal 2 and dont know whether to use eva foam or worbla for the body
I love your videos and have been binge watching them right now and have been wondering. Do you think just not wearing makeup, even eye-stuff is bad. you should watch night eyes' video about not wearing cosplay makeup, it might help!!
I think she covered her opinion of makeup in a previous video... I think she said that makeup helps photos look good and that it really helps the whole look. Personally, I don't like it either, but I'm willing to do it if it makes it look better.

Great tips! But, what do I do if my cosplay ideas aren't very popular?
Thank you so much for posting this! I actually never heard of cosplaytutorial.com so that's awesome! I've actually used TH-cam as my research :)
How would you buy fabric if you cannot feel it first? I only have Joann fabric and Hancock around me and they have the same pleather that you recommended not buying.

this helped a lot. thank you;
I'm showing my age too in that I also remember the days of only Cosplay.com... :'D

I'm currently working on a costume for my own character, a demon hunter. And let me tell you. Coming up with ideas is the hardest part. Help.
Idk
Yesterday I found a tutorial how to make 3 DIY shoes with fabric laces. Everything is in the discription but not the fabric lace. So I watched the full video and when the one woman asked the other woman where to get that fabric lace she said only "I'm sure all guys here have some of that at home." 😑 I was so angry about that...
cant find a grillby costume anywhere like there is but the cosplayers dont show the process
THANK YOU FOR THIS! as a complete beginner on this, youtube is the first place i go to so this is extremely helpful
Thanks!!
Thanks
I feel really fortunate that I discovered the IMT group. Like, millions of vloggers in the world, and I was lucky enough to end up watching (almost exclusively as far as vloggers go), Solo, Courtoon and you! And sometimes Chinasaur...but she always seems like she hates vlogging. Haha
This is really really helpful! Thank you! And you look so cute as a blond!
I would love to see a cosplay 101 video about posing, but I think that might go hand in hand with cosplay character research.
This came right at the time I needed it, thanks!
some cosplay even from popular animes or games are still rly hard to find, im quinda still struggling resourching to my league one : /
OMG, thank you so much! I always do some research, but, to me, the problem is the large quantity of information. But I am one of the "luck ones" here in Brazil, since I can understand English. A lot of brazillian cosplayers on the majority of the pages can't =[
I always print out a picture of character to make my cosplays I used the picture to find fabrics and wigs.
Is that music at the end the same as what is used in Bakemonogatari?
I've been cosplaying for 5 years(officially, yes. Practical, no). And I've collected sooo many tutorials, reference pictures and so on, on pinterest, which I actually would recommend. There's going to be alot of not that helpfull stuff when you search there, BUT it's an amazing site to save tutorials and stuff in folders. I love it. Just wanted to share that with everyone :3!
*if some of the stuff i wrote didn't make sense: I don't speak english as my native(?) language*
I'm cosplaying enma ai from jigoku shoujo and I think my costume won't cost a lot but not sure about the wig
I can't express how much I agree with this :D
I have two questions.... 1. How do you feel about changing a character's gender for cosplaying? 2. How do you feel about someone who cosplays several people from the same anime? Thanks. Your video's are so fun and helpful
Got herr from IMT and HOLY you're so freakin awesome!!! I love your Barbra Gordon Batgirl cosplay!!! Wish I could go to cons and cosplay like you but my parents won't let me... 😭😭😭
I pretty much use google or cosplay.com if I can't get an answer I just wing it :p
I've only ever asked another cosplayer for information on something specific they did on their costume. I'm usually very good at research.. but then I procrastinate and nothing ever gets done XD
Another great video thanks yoh :D !
Who is the Disney Princess cosplayer she mentioned in the video? I couldn't seem to catch it! D:

Anyone know were i can find a guide on sheik, from the Legend of Zelda, i cant find anything just two or three photos. I´m trying to go for the feminine model because it seemed easier. Thanks :)
Btw great video xD
I’m doing a kokichi ouma cosplay and I have a few fabric bases to use, idk if I should use the thinner or thicker fabrics because I’m going to a summer con. His outfit seems complicated-ish and I’m using buttons on the fabric and I’m afraid it might rip while I sew in the buttons, also another quick question is, what type of fabric brands do you commonly use?
thanks for the help and can use google images for like reference photos of armor and weapons
yeah that's actually pretty helpful tool that's what I do for swords and just costumes in general
