Jimmy White and Jud Trump with their extreme top spin shots did it for me. Absolutely unbelievable 😀 Miss seeing and hearing Willie Thorne in the commentators box. Sadly missed but not forgotten. Rest in peace my friend x
Low-key but good 'ol blondie Neil R. made some really good shots in his career. Shelby used to play more difficult shots back then but i think he past his prime and will never attempt those risky but spectacular pots anymore.
Also, check out Jimmy White paired up with Alex Higgins playing Mike Massey and Bobby Hunter in an amazing 9 ball match. Some of the shots are unbelievable!
Alex Higgins' ridiculous shot on the blue playing against Jimmy White is arguably the greatest shot ever made in professional snooker. He went on to win that frame and the match in the final frame with a 16-15 victory, followed by a victory over the legendary Ray Reardon in the final (who had previously beaten Higgins in the 1976 World Championship). That was the 1982 World Championship.
yeah, he was legend, the man love for the game has never grow weaker with age. I wish he had more mental supports in time like Ronnie did. I really miss him...
This is a top vid and definitely the best choices of shot I've ever seen in a snooker video. The maker is obviously a proper player to realise the level of difficulty for the ones included. Great stuff!
Well, they do walk several kilometers around the table during long matches 🚶🏻♂️ After playing pool for more than 5 hours you feel the strain on your legs, shoulders, hand and neck 🤷🏻♂️
Some of the control these players are getting off the cue ball is absolutely mesmerising, anyone who has played snooker will tell you just how difficult a skill that is.....
Most snooker shots, as in many sports, are foreseeable with a little knowledge and experience of the contest. Shaun Murphy's unbelievable pot - the very first of this video - was imagination of a professional competitor in true world class. Completely refreshing, whether you've watched snooker all your life, or simply have the character to recognise sporting brilliance - when you witness it. A moment of sheer, improvised magic.
It might actually be the easiest shot on the list...you might have to try it a few times but you will get that, unlike other shots...still very impressive at the crucible
Well, the red is over the pocket. I'd say any decent player would immediatly think of that shot (it's the natural way to try and pot it). Pulling it off in a match on a table you are not particularly familiar with is another matter, though.
Semi outside perspective here. I'm a pool player, I don't play snooker but I really enjoy 9 ball. A lowly 5, a peasant in the eyes of most pool pros, but I can honestly say that having not grown up watching snooker. I can still see the pure skill and competitiveness when I do watch snooker. it's more than just a good eye, and steady hand when playing any form of billiards.
Fantastic shots.... Alex H at 14 mins or so was the one I was thinking about when I played this video. I remember watching it live because AH was under massive pressure to get to the final. Miss that blue and it was probably curtains. God; I am old.
Look at the good sportsmanship of these players. Everyone just happy to witness the greatness of each other. I know no other sport like that. Even a Renegade like O'Sullivan cannot produce any long lasting drama that robbs the focus from these athlets.
The magnificence of a shot can also be judged by whether other pros are able to replicate it. Id say that Alex Higgins' prodigious blue on the old slow tables is the most unreproducible shot here, and there are several amazing ones.
I guess you underestimate the difficulty of reproducing Maguire's shot! More seriously, I don't think Higgins' shot is that difficult to reproduce for the pros (they showed some of them trying a while ago and they tended to overdo it, if anything). Plus Higgins didn't really mean to play the shot that way. That being said, that break is great to watch for the series of hard pots, although his positional game is all over the place.
@@freyc1 He clearly meant to play it that way. Replicating any shot for fun is possible for a group of pros after the event. Higgins played the shot under immense pressure in a world championship semi-final game. No other shot comes close. Also he was drunk, making it even more impressive.
@@sirlordcomic No, he clearly didn't mean to land where he landed (he wasn't stupid). And I never said it wasn't a great pot, especially under the circumstandes : I responded to someone saying it was the most unreproducible shot in the video. As far as your last sentence is concerned, needing to be drunk to perform doesn't make anything more impressive to me, and I don't think he's drunk here.
@@freyc1 White said in a recent interview Higgins was drinking large vodkas and orange.. So he certainly wasn't sober. I meant he was playing for the black.. I said nothing about playing while drunk being impressive, I meant that fact he was drunk made it technically even more impressive. I doubt the pros you mentioned could reproduce it with even one large vodka and orange in them.
I hadn't seen that Jimmy White pink in ages.. All of the other shots are great, important or genius, but that one still has the quality to make me wonder what's wrong with the tv (then) or wifi (now). Magic!
Loved this. Thank you. Plenty from Trump. Loads from Williams unsurprisingly. That ‘no look’ escape/pot was ludicrous. Kirk Stevens shot on the green as part of 147 but then Selby’s final black for a maximum too! So many others 🙂
To be fair, there were a couple of straight long pots in there, that weren't that amazing that they belong on a list like this. But I'm so glad those legendary Jimmy White shots made it on the list. Took a while to get to them, but they belong to the most amazing snooker shots ever. Wouldn't have minded to have seen Steve Davis and Paul Hunter in there. They played some amazing snooker.
I think those "long straight pots" were included because they were great examples of "cueing power". It wasn't the pot per se, that was incredible, but the backspin on the cue ball, which is part of the shot.
It's easy to say a shot isn't that amazing when you're not the one pulling it off, and have little knowledge of what it takes to do so. Making something difficult look easy is the true sign of a pro. Extremely long shots that require massive power and clinical cue ball control are far, far from easy... which is why the ex-pro commentators react the way they do.
and his shot was there not because of the difficulty or technicality, just purely how calm he handled the shot. Well, anyone would be calm if he took a 5-week-vacation in his mind. He just look like he's thinking, it's his style; in fact, he can clear the table faster than Ronnie, just didn't feel like, didn't match the mental image =))))))
So many of these shots are amazing but the context of the frame or match is what makes the great ones great. An exhibition shot when the frame is out of sight or the other guy needs 3 snookers are brilliant to watch but the truly great shots are the genuinely brave ones when the frame is still live.
Amazing selection, makes it very hard to pick a favorite. I am not an expert, in fact never dared to touch a snooker table -& don't think I would ever will- however, my limited practice with billiard allowed me to appreciate and enjoy each one of these magnificent shots . The one before last is the one that made me pick up my jaw off the floor. The way he made the cue ball came to a complete stop after such a powerful shot over such short distance is ridicules. Is as if he shot a magnetic ball on a copper surface!
Great compilation! Only shot I would also argue was worthy was Neil Robertson's long pot of the red with the cue-ball cannoning into another red to clear the path for the black.
I have watched thousands of top quality snooker shots over the years. IMO the unfashionable Peter Edbon's pink ball was THE GREATEST SHOT EVER IN THE HISTORY OF SNOOKER, because of the context. Semi-final of the World Championships, if he missed he was out of the tournament. This shot inspired him to comeback and win the match against the odds and then do exactly the same in the final in the deciding frame against Stephen Hendry, one of the all time greats and become World Champion! Peter Ebdon, often gets slated by SOME of the snooker world for being a slow and deliberate player, but he was someone who did not have the natural talent of say a Jimmy White, however, he absolutely maximised his potential with his incredible attitude and application. He left the game of snooker not only being able to say "I won the world title" but also being able to say "I once played probably the best shot in the history of the game!". Well done Peter Ebdon!
I grew up watching Alex Higgins and Jimmy (James) White, two great players, I named my youngest son Alex James, in my opinion these two players were pioneers of entertainment and skill that brought the game to new audiences. What in the unexplained myseteries happend at 15:35. That cueball control was out of this world. Also williams shot around the 3min mark where he wasnt even looking just proves how amazing he is.
Lots of top, like an unbelievable amount, the position of the pink allowed the cue ball to hit the cushion just before the top-spin took effect, so the top spin acted as a break for the rebound.
Some utterly ridiculous stuff. Brilliant and baffling in equal measure. Those of us who have a go now and then at playing the game know how hard it is to even do the basics, then you see things like this and wonder why you bother 😆
There's so many shots that Jimmy White has played that aren't in this. Like when he smashed the brown ball into the centre pocket from the brown spot, screwed back up in and out of baulk, and landed on a red. Pure class
The best shots are the ones that both the potter and the opponent smile at. When they both acknowledge the skill and often degree of luck, it makes it all the more special. Many times you see the potter trying to constrain their surprise or smugness at making the shot, and that ruins it for me personally. I could be a snooker commentator too:

- "Unbelievable!"
With the occasional "where's the cue ball going?"
Oh and that's a bad miss
Balls all over the place
3:48 Ah, but could you do "He deserved a little kiss on the brown, there"?
When you can look at that first shot before he takes it and explain what the hell he's doing like Virgo did, you might have half a chance.
