    Good evening Dave, i have a couple of questions to ask if i may. Does the url on the source site when you move it over to the destination site (say youre using a local environment like local by flywheel), and two once you restore from the source site to the destination site, and you get kicked out do you have to use the credentials of your source site to log back into your destination site?

    • @dave-swift
      @dave-swift  ปีที่แล้ว

      When you use WPvivid to migrate your site, it'll update the URLs from the source site to match the destination site automatically. So, if you're using a local environment like Local by Flywheel, the plugin will handle the URL changes for you.
      Now, about getting logged out after the migration - it's common to be logged out of the destination site during the process. When that happens, you'll need to log back in using the same credentials from the source site. This is because WPvivid migrates the user data, including your login information. Once you're logged in, you can update the credentials if you want.
      Let me know if you have any more questions or if there's anything else I can help you with!

      No worries! Conceptualizing all this stuff is tricky. Once you do it a few times you'll figure it out. Every migration is a little different. WordPress is wonderful that way! So many different server configs, plug-in setups, themes, hosts... I'm getting anxiety just thinking about it!

    What I would like to know is how this works when you want to export a WP site but NOT import into another WP. I want to export text, images, videos and links keeping their current association by post so I know what goes with what, and then use a different platform to re-organize and develop the site. (Rapidweaver+Foundation). All WP plugins and tuts assume you will be using WP to import. So how would this work? What do the files look like? Does WPvivid only export a single file-what kind? Any ideas of what to use to just access what I need?

    • @dave-swift
      @dave-swift  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      What you're looking for doesn't really exist. It would likely be best to just keep the site up while you do the migration on a staging site. You will have to manually rebuild on the new platform.

    Thx but what if you want to move the site and the domain? When I set up Wordpress in new hosting and use my same domain it kinda brings up my original site in my new site, when I go to plug ins they are there. Like I can’t get a clean copy of Wordpress, do I need to make up a temp domain for this?

    • @dave-swift

      Autonami is now called FunnelKit automations.
      The team is doing a great job of adding new features and modern.
      I don't love the email editor and honestly, not quite sold on having email inside of my WordPress site.
      I have helped WooCommerce sites add FunnelKit, and they're sending 2M emails a month. It's definitely doable.
      Comparing to Klaviyo, well I guess Klaviyo has a stranglehold on the Shopify market, but I don't really see many WordPress sites using them. They are costly and honestly not as feature rich these days -- Klayviyo was a market innovator but a lot of competition has caught up.
      IMO self hosting email marketing is a great way for a business to cut an often unwieldy expense and take ownership of their data. It is also an additional burden so you have to be prepared to spend some time in that department.

      So you literally have your DNS records pointing to two hosts at once?
      One on the main domain at your source site and one on a staging subdomain at your destination site?
      Then after migrating the site you go through the work to change the site from the subdomain to the main domain, point the DNS to the new host, etc.?
      My brain is still tweaked about this...

    • @dave-swift
      @dave-swift  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      DNS records can only point to one place at a time.
      When you migrate a site, you’ll have to migrate it to a different domain (this can be a subdomain or a temporary domain provided by your host, you don’t need to buy an extra domain).
      After the migration is complete, check it to make sure the site looks and functions correctly on the temporary domain before updating the site and DNS records to point to the permanent domain.

    Sometimes I have trouble moving a site to a new host when both have the same domain name... ex. mysite.com to mysite.com. DNS points to the original site so accessing the new site isn't as straight forward. I would also like to see a cPanel to cPanel site transfer video. I have sites that have email accounts so just moving WP over isn't good enough. Need to move email over as well.

    • @dave-swift
      @dave-swift  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would not recommend using email on the same server that's running your WordPress site, especially if it's transactionally heavy (eComm or an LMS). Leave email to the pros like Rackspace, Gsuite, Office 365 Outlook, etc.
      For migrating a site and keeping the same name, I'd recommend moving with a different name on the destination initially. Once you verify that your migration looks good with the alternate domain name, update your destination site to the desired name and adjust your DNS records to point at the new server.
