  • In today's episode of the Toyota Celsior aka Lexus LS 400 restoration project, we're going back to factory springs and struts and getting rid of the RSR lowering springs. While I wait on a plethora of parts for the front and rear suspension, I purchased a used set of springs and struts for all 4 corners.
    Because I want to feel the incremental improvements of this car, I'm installed these used struts and springs to feel the difference between them and the RSR lowering springs currently on the car.
    How much of a different is this going to make? Let's find out!

    This is like an oasis in the clown world of slammed, cambered, straight piped abomination / desecration of this engineering achievement. Thank you for respecting this car for what it is and was meant to be. A ride in an LS is supposed to be serene, comfortable, quiet and luxurious. Respect brother 👏

    Once you get the bushings replaced it will be way better than it is now.

    Great stuff JJ - love your enthusiasm and thoroughness👍
    I have a ‘97 here in the UK, and am gradually going through her - will shortly be tackling the suspension arms all round.
    Keep up the good work - I’ll be watching your progress with interest.

    Loving your project to restore back to stock and want to say thank you for posting these in depth videos 😊 you might even have given me the push to try some of the simpler jobs on my '95 when I can find some space to do work in.

    Appreciate this video. I like how someone has gone the comfort route, instead of the stance route. I am in the same boat with my LS430. Got a pretty low riding setup (coilovers) and bigger wheels than stock. Sort of had my fun with it, now I just want comfort and stock seems to be the wise choice. Feeling every bump and imperfection in the road is sort of irritating now. I will probably get new shocks and 17" factory wheels, which means more wall on the tire. I still think these cars (the LS400, 430 and 460) look gangster as stock, so I am not concerned about how it will look with the new massive wheel gap once it happens.

    Very impressive. Hand and finger bashing, awkward angles in tight spaces (that’s what she said!), worrying about the camera - I’d be on stone-cold tilt doing all this. Thorough rundown made it captivating and informative. Will be following along!

    I am glad to see someone who isn't a 20 something who first blows all their money on coilovers and wheels. Especially when you can see their entire suspension is blown out from age. I like lowering and modifying my cars too. But be smart about it.

    Nice work! That rear suspension looks like such a pain 🤯
    Don’t forget to pre-load your new suspension. I didn’t see you do it on this install.

      Massive pain indeed! Hopefully when I do it again with new parts it won’t be such a hassle.
      Totally will be doing that! Not super worried about it on this old setup for now though

    Were you supposed to compress the shocks before removing them? Would that have made it easier? I think I saw ChrisFix do that in his videos. Great series, JJ! Looking forwArd to following along. Just subbed.

      I bet you could do that, but it’s not necessary when installing new shocks. Just struggled since it was used

    These cars are so nice I don't get why people say its less reliable than new cars cuz maintenance should be like hundreds compared to buying a new car 😂😂 also maintenance is not expensive when you take car of you car smh over all im for sure soon to own one of these maybe the 1993 model or 1998. 1995 kinda ugly just cuz of the headlights being smaller compared to the 1993 and 1998

    Did the new struts and springs do anything for the clunk when shifting? I did my transmission mount and it feels better but there's still a clunk.

    • @JJinMotion

      No it didn’t, I think that’s gonna be rear knuckle bushings. I am almost done with motor mounts so I’m gonna see if that helps too

      The clunk will be movement in the differential mounting bushes, mine had it too, it will get to a point were it gets no worse, then suddenly the bush tears and falls off!...big problem can't drive the car!

    The KYB shock will not last. It has a different eyelet design where it connects to the lower arm; more stress is placed on the rubber bush than with the Original shock ab eyelet. I have used KYB; they lasted 3 months before the rubber completely deformed in the eyelet...stick with original shock ab. it will last for years. Cheers from Australia. • @JJinMotion

      Thanks for the heads up. The OEM shocks are over $200 per corner, so I'll run with the KYB OE for now and see how well it goes

    • @Warpedsmac

      You are right ...Lexus dealer GENUINE (OEM does not necessarily mean it is genuine spec I'm afraid) shock is double the price of the KYB after market . The KYB you buy in the red and white box IS NOT the same spec as genuine even though KYB and Tokata manufacture for Lexus/Toyota
      I will be watching with great interest.
      It is nice to see young fellas like you taking an interest in the LS400/Celsior... IMHO the finest car ever, except the LS430 !!!!!
