Actually, he does get credit for that. At least today we are all in agreement that this was a beautifully shot film. But it was far from the masterpiece that he promised. Also, he should have never let success go in his head. It was his ego that bankrupted a studio, ruined Kris Kristoffersons career, and ended a certain way of film making which sucks.
I just wish he took a better look at the script. In three and a half hours, you could’ve had an ensemble and we could’ve cared more about the immigrant characters. Maybe some were thieves and anarchists, maybe some were genuine ranchers. They could’ve had problems amongst themselves, a few betrayals, maybe some immigrants conspire with the death squad? Who knows? It could’ve been like a 19th century novel. Say what you want about Gone With The Wind-there was a lot going on with the story. That way, even if the love triangle subplot was boring, you’d at least have something else to be invested in and it would make the final battle all the more consequential.
Well, to be fair, it *does* make sense having John Hurt as class orator. Usually his voice could make the phone book sound cool. (See: The Black Cauldron)

Heaven's Gate is seriously one of the worst movies I have ever seen. The only thing I remember about it is the stupid and completely unnecessary wedding dance scene which goes on for ten tedious minutes and adds absolutely nothing of value to the film. It doesn't advance the plot, it doesn't tell us anything about the characters, or anything. It's like it was only included to get the movie over three hours. Fuck this movie.
The main problem with this film is the characters and the story. The characters are dull, bland, boring and some of them could easily be morphed into one single character and the story isn't big nor interesting enough for a five and a half hour film, hell three and a half hours is pushing it and I love long films; I prefer Peter Jackson's King Kong to the original, one of my favorite movies is Gettysburg, a movie that's four hours and fourteen minutes long, and the director's cut is seventeen minutes longer. The difference between Gettysburg and Heaven's Gate is that there was no major hype in it, the director was an unknown, and it started out as a TV miniseries for god's sake, and yet it was a pretty good movie with great characters, great action, great music, a great story that warranted a four and a half hour movie, and cinematography that was good but also allowed you to see what was going on in a war scene while still showing the carnage and the smoke. (a major flaw with this film's photography is that the battle scenes are so dusty that it's hard to tell what's going on and who dies) and yet Gettysburg didn't even have half the budget that this movie did. As it's stands Heaven's Gate isn't a terrible film, definitely not among the worst ever made, it's just a bloated and bad film that just stands in history now as a lesson that creator's aren't flawless. And this is coming from a guy who loves the Star Wars prequels as much as the original trilogy.
I also love long films, but a film needs to warrant it's runtime for sure. I'm one of like 12 people in the world that liked The Shining Miniseries [270 minutes], I enjoyed Inland Empire [187 minutes], Michael Cimino's other film The Deer Hunter [183 minutes], I actually didn't know about Gettysburg but I want to watch it now.
Existential Dread It's a pretty good movie, it focuses on both sides of the U.S. Civil war, shows us how both sides suffered, how friends were forced to fight friends. Make it not so black and white as it shows both sides had good and bad.
At the very least, "Heavens Gate" has excellent cinematography and very impressive sets. Clearly the money is on the screen and everything looks very authentic. This doesnt make it a *good* film, but technically an impressive one. Plus, Christopher Walken is a lot of fun, as always. Even as subdued as here, there is something arresting about his performance. :)
So I actually finally got around to watching this movie and I really can’t I have to agree with Brad on this. It’s honestly not a bad movie and while I agree there are parts That are overly long and sometimes I could understand what they were saying I actually enjoyed the film and it did keep my attention

Why did Jim give up his wealthy life style for a while to join the town? 4. Why is Billy part of the cattle men? -then there's other problems..1. Why does Jim bother to read out the entire list to the townspeople when he already said that nearly everybody in the town is marked? Shouldn't he use that time to arm the townspeople? 2. Why did Jim, J.B., Ella stop off at the cabin to get dressed up, when they knew Canton is after them? Then there's other problems: the film wants to make Nate into a sympathetic character when we know that he's a hitman for the association! (the movie Lepke, has the same problem, in that in the opening scenes we see the Tony Curtis character murder a man for not paying debts, then the film includes a love story about him and his girlfriend/wife.
If only Cimino had his ego in check and did not act like an entitled spoiled brat, director-driven films would still be existing today. The cool thing about UA is that they gave the director full control of the production, and they were even trusted with blank checks. The studio did not interfere in anyway with the creative aspects of the movie. Unlike today, studio executives will micromanage everything and would demand last minute rewrites. We know how this ruined a lot of movies. Also art films began to lose their mainstream popularity after this. Artsy films are now shown at festivals, since studios would rather distribute superhero movies since they are more profitable,
Apparently those rich boy schools' graduation ceremonies in the 19th century, really did often turn into drunken bar fights and the schools really did hire policemen to attend graduations.

I would like to point out that this movie connects Back to the Future series, as Huey Lewis is in one movie, and "the News" are in the other. A Million Ways to Die in the West connects both together!
Find the five hour cut shown for about 10 minutes in France in 1981 or don't bother. This movie is a masterpiece. The complaints about missing motivation and character are founded in the fact that they're all in the 90 plus minutes hacked out to bring the thing down to a mere three hours.
+Tim Terrell Yeah. If it takes five hours to tell a story right, take five hours. Split it into two 150 minute movies, like they ought to have done with Cleopatra.
I recommend checking out the book FINAL CUT if you get a chance. It goes into detail how the film was ultimately the undoing of UNITED ARTISTS and the "New Hollywood" era.
Let us also not forget that Heaven's Gate practically decimated the Western as a movie genre, with the exception of such films as Silverado and Pale Rider (both of which came out in 1985) and the early 90's with Dances with Wolves, Unforgiven and Tombstone (all great flicks) the Western has never really recovered in Hollywood since Heaven's Gate.
Eh. Honestly, I feel like westerns should be a small, niche genre, like WWII movies. Compared to the endless possibilities of sci fi or fantasy, westerns are all set in the same area, same time period, same aesthetic. And hey, the remake of True Grit was good.
I liked it. You can not look at it like a western. It is a movie about people and how life was then. My favorite character is the beauty from of the brothel.

I don't know how I sat through this film. There were only two good things about it; Vilmos Zsigmond's stunning cinematography (though I didn't see its full beauty, because the version I saw was MGM's DVD release), and the impressive production design. Just seeing clips of this film makes me cringe.
So how long is the version you saw? The 5 hour 25 minute Workprint (unlikely, given that was made studio execs only) The 3 hour 39 minute Theatrical release ( The 2 hour 29 minute edited cut Or the 3 hour 36 minute final cut from 2012?
I really like this film! But yeah Cimino was probably a little nuts (refusing to shoot all day untill a cloud formation occurred, expensive irrigation to make the grass greener, making the actors do 52 takes,) but it's my favourite western.
What I always wondered about was how is it that Jim and his future wife were attending the same school, but never noticed each other till the last day?

This movie came up when looking into the animated film, Rock and Rule, an another over budget passion project; Rob Kirkpatrick, an assistant editor on the project, blamed it for MGM basically burying their movie by refusing to promote it. Interesting to see how this movie bomb affected the industry as a whole.
Another problem with the film is that the prostituition subplot is not needed in the film. The subplot feels thrown in. Cimino said that he wanted audiences to know about what it was like to work in 19th century cathouses. The only flaw is that it does nothing for the plot.
You are absolutely right this film was an utter disaster and people like Richard Brody who try and revive it are nutty. Its a very bad movie and CImino never knew what he was doing.

Cimino, after this epic failure, started life anew as Jon Lovitz. It would have been better if he just paid off the money he wasted.
What's sad is that while the Director's cut is ridiculously long, it is an excellent movie. Not as good as Deer Hunter, but excellent.

I liked it. You can not look at it like a western. It is a movie about people and how life was then. My favorite character is the beauty from of the brothel.

I don't know how I sat through this film. There were only two good things about it; Vilmos Zsigmond's stunning cinematography (though I didn't see its full beauty, because the version I saw was MGM's DVD release), and the impressive production design. Just seeing clips of this film makes me cringe.
This is my all time favourite western! Yes the film has problems but I really like it. I liked Legend of the Lone Ranger too.

It's definitely not the 2 hour 29-minute version, which, as far as I'm aware, has never been released to home video.

I really like this film! But yeah Cimino was probably a little nuts (refusing to shoot all day untill a cloud formation occurred, expensive irrigation to make the grass greener, making the actors do 52 takes,) but it's my favourite western.
What I always wondered about was how is it that Jim and his future wife were attending the same school, but never noticed each other till the last day?

I just finished watching this movie. I've seen it 3 times now in the last 40 years. I don't really think it's all that bad. Skip through the boring parts and it seems fine.

Mary Barker Well, Brad HAS released DVDs of his show. The first has all the episodes of his Public Domain Month, and the 2nd is subtitled "Nudies, Rudies, and Crudies."
SpeedyEric1 Exactly "public domain month". It's fine for him to make DVDs of public domain reviews, but if it's a copyrighted work that becomes a legal grey area. IDK about "Nudies, Rudies, and Crudies", either those ones were also public domain, or obscure enough that he had little to worry about.

I slept through this. The only other movie I slept through was Titanic twice. I have seen Titanic all the way through, and it is a technical masterpiece still boring as shit

This movie came up when looking into the animated film, Rock and Rule, an another over budget passion project; Rob Kirkpatrick, an assistant editor on the project, blamed it for MGM basically burying their movie by refusing to promote it.
Interesting to see how this movie bomb affected the industry as a whole.

Another problem with the film is that the prostituition subplot is not needed in the film. The subplot feels thrown in. Cimino said that he wanted audiences to know about what it was like to work in 19th century cathouses. The only flaw is that it does nothing for the plot.
You are absolutely right this film was an utter disaster and people like Richard Brody who try and revive it are nutty. Its a very bad movie and CImino never knew what he was doing.
