As a Texas native, I think some important context for Buc-ee's is that they don't exist in the cities themselves, they're out about 30 minutes down the highway at least. Depending on which way you're going, Buc-ees becomes either the last marks or first signs of civilization between miles of pure open road. They have so much to sell because they're a goddamn oasis in the desert that is Texas.

Also, as a Latina, Cinco de Mayo is a celebration of a victory against the French during the Battle of Puebla, which Mexico was very much not prepared for or expected to win. I won't pretend to know the specific history of it being celebrated, but I do know that, where I live, we use it as an excuse to further celebrate our culture. The anecdote I've always heard about Beaver is that people used to make fun of him to his ex-wife because he's kind of short, and at one point, his ex-wife stood up for him and said "He's the tallest man in Brazoria County when he stands on his wallet."

I was about to say Woolie got the most Tourist version of visiting Texas at the beginning with the Buc-ee's stuff. Contrary to all their bluster, they're not REALLY a cultural institute outside scattered small towns that are too small to have a Wal-mart.
...But that Uber story is the most Texas experience you can have. Someone being the most polite person in the world until they have to apologize for messing up, going nuclear, and then trying to sell you something like nothing happened is sadly about as authentic of a Texas experience as you can get.
I mean, don't get me wrong. We have some great food, art, music, cultural, and interesting ethnic crossovers (despite all the anti-immigration shit), but while we didn't INVENT the idea of "polite is different than nice", some people around here certainly mastered it.

As an Uber driver, the reporting system is an absolute joke and needs to be investigated by the government.
Rider or driver can report anything at any time without evidence.
I’ve been reported for being in an accident! I don’t even have to send pictures of my car to prove anything.
Also if you take the Uber survey and complain they send random ghost reports your way to try and “fire” you and it can’t be fought because you aren’t actually an employee.
I risk my account just by saying all this lol I get the ease of Uber, but holy crap Uber needs to go under. Worst business practices out there atm and I feel I’ll be in a huge class action lawsuit later in life for driving for them. Rant over.

The best way I heard Buc-ee's described is as consumerism pushed to it's logical limit.

Buccee's is the ultimate white suburbanite 'shrine'. Excessive use of land, spaced out where you don't have to ever interact with anyone (even though you're in public), infinite consumerism, excess to the point of being garish, and everyone must be nice to you under the iron fist of "The Brand Image".
I've heard that the reason they pay non-shit wages is that it's a shit place to work. Almost like Disney in their psycho dedication to ensuring the customer doesn't ever feel wronged. Like Walmart style chants, weird etiquette for how to interact with people (can't ever say the word 'customer', how to point w/multiple fingers, 'rags' are to be referred to as 'towels'), etc.

Buc ee's is kinda shit to work for. Sure they talk nice wages but there are alot of caveats to that. One example I remember is it is against company policy for an employee to carry a cellphone and 10 hour shifts with no lunch just a 10 minute break.

As someone from Texas, the only thing truly great about buccee's are how clean they keep their restrooms
Otherwise it feels like the walmart of gas stations. Massive and bloated, doesn't pay their workers for how hard they work them and all around just feels kinda gross as a place of business with a weirdly cult like fanbase for some reason.

Ooo tattoo talk! Neat. Yeah to this day the most painful tattoo I've had was on my shoulderblade of all places. Because it was getting by my spine at one point. After that, the rest of my tattoos were NOTHING in comparison. Took a nap during one even. But yeah the xenomorph on my shoulder hurt so bad I named him. Leon. Since Kings of Leon kept playing in the shop while it was getting done.

The thing with texas drivers brings back nightmare memories. My wife used to live there and we've gone there a couple times to visit her parents. They actively hate people not in cars.
Its so strange. They have a big culture for cars and driving, if you're not in a car you're in the way and you're less. I have seen with my own eyes drivers try to hit bicyclists and pedestrians on multiple occasions, and my wife warned me about walking around.

Please tell me you went to a Whataburger (say it like you spell it, one word.) or an HEB while you were here as well. I'm telling you, if you want to taste Texas, go to an HEB. Get some exclusive to HEB coffee, some loquitos, menudo, seasoning for the menudo because they make it bland for the white people. Head to the seasoning aisle and look for the Fiesta (brand name) SECTION.
You will find flavor heaven. Highly recommend anything chilli lime.
After that, head to the candy aisle, I know, I know, but trust me on this one. American candy is trash, Mexican candy and snacks all day!
Fellow Texans, back me up on this.

HEB is the place that has a bunch of flavors of smoked salmon like Everything Bagel. They also own Central Market, which I've found to be a better experience than Whole Foods.
