Did this journey in a hire boat about 50 years ago. Got about 1/2 way when the water pump belt snapped. Threw the anchor in but the chain wasn't long enough to reach the bottom. Slowly drifted out of the channel until the anchor held in a shallow bit. No mobiles is those days so we tried waving to boats in the channel. They thought we were being friendly and waved back. We had hired a dinghy so sailed it to Yarmouth and used a phone box to contact the hire company. Tide was ebbing so we got another holiday maker to tow us back to middle of Breydon and sailed to our hire boat which was now aground. Hire company came out the next day (had to wait for tide) and put new belt on. BTW my wife was pregnant at the time !
