NELSON PASS & MIKEY talk amplifiers and speakers # 2

  • Here Nelson and I go a little more into the founding of Pass Labs and what its goal is and where it stands in regards to HiFi vs First Watt and what it stands for .
    Very interesting and very true how the buyers will dictate where/how they want the product. Again this goes back to my feeling that a great design needs little to no change.
    Enjoy !

    Can confirm… VFETs & SITs are amazing. Best I’ve ever heard actually.
    Edit: great interview! Would love another round with him!

    Nelson always gives a great interview and talks about where he got his start at ESS 50 years ago in 1972. My first speakers were a pair of ESS AMT 1 Heil Air Motion Transformers in 1972 or 1973 when they first came out. Female vocals through the AMT were so realistic. Joan Baez and others gave the allusion of natural realism which was uncanny - no hint of artificial HiFi sound. Cost back then was I Think about $1,100??

    So Sorry to hear that your mom passed away. Mine did in 2007. I still think about her often. The pain and the loss never go away. It just lessens overtime

    Besides Altec 755a, or WE 755a (WE/Altec 756b) are pretty decent “full range” speakers that IMHO sound absolutely great within their range. If you get a chance listen to the WE TA-4189.
    Question for Nelson, many radar and dish transponders used your static induction transistor, of course they run at big voltage, have you any experience in rigging this big bad SIT and running them at considerably lower voltage and current as a one stage amp?

      Hi Bob, thanks for the feedback.. Im pretty sure you can ask that question on the forums at his First Watt website or the DIY Store...

    Mikey, glad you did not ask about his class D products. haha. Great sound is the goal Pass achieves. Rigorous listening tests. Simple circuits.
    Need to get all the really odd, funny stories on video for posterity. Nelson is very cautious about what he reveals.

    so SITs' are dead and gone for the future? I wish you would have let him finish what he was saying. Thanks for the interview, gotta love Nelson!

    • @OCDHIFiGuy
      @OCDHIFiGuy  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      NO. he is making SIT amps with much larger industrial SIT's that make 4 times the power. wait for part 3.

      @@OCDHIFiGuy I believe you're talking about these ( IXTN40P50P P-Channel & IXFN140N30P N-CHannel ) just chunky MOSFETs. I hope I'm wrong

      He'd say it's great. There's a place for everything. He kind of made that evident when talking about the different amp circuit types and class. Different strokes for different folks was his tack.
