Armstrong Pame, an IAS officer of the 2009 batch, has earned the title of "Miracle Man" for his extraordinary efforts in transforming the lives of people in Manipur. Pame, the first IAS officer from the Zeme Tribe of the Naga People, hails from the Tamenglong district of Manipur. His remarkable journey is a testament to the power of determination, empathy, and community spirit.
One of Pame's most notable achievements is the construction of the "People's Road," a 100 km road that connects Tousem, one of India's most backward subdivisions, with the rest of Manipur, as well as Assam and Nagaland. This road has significantly improved the lives of the local people by providing them with much-needed access to essential services and opportunities.
Pame's inspiration for building the road came from his experiences as the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) of Tousem in 2012. During his visits to various villages, he witnessed the hardships faced by the residents, who had to carry sacks of rice on their backs and transport patients on makeshift bamboo stretchers due to the lack of motorable roads. The villagers' plea for a road moved him deeply, compelling him to take action.
Despite the lack of government support, Pame was undeterred. He turned to social media to raise funds, launching a campaign on Facebook in August 2012. The response was overwhelming, with contributions pouring in from all over the world. Pame himself donated Rs. 5 lakh, his brother contributed Rs. 1 lakh, and even their mother gave a month's pension. The campaign raised Rs. 40 lakh, a remarkable feat considering the scale of the project.
Pame's initiative attracted widespread attention and support. Contractors provided machinery for free, and the local community came together to volunteer their labor. Over 250 people, including more than 100 women, participated in the construction, working with tools and spades to build the road. This collective effort not only saved labor costs but also strengthened the community's sense of ownership and pride.
Pame's extraordinary work earned him national and international recognition. He was invited to Facebook's headquarters in California and was nominated for the CNN-IBN Indian of the Year in the Public Service category in 2012. His story continues to inspire many, showcasing the impact that one determined individual can have on a community.
Pame's message to the youth is one of encouragement and selflessness. He urges everyone to give their best in whatever they do, to live life to the fullest, and to look beyond personal gains. According to him, true fulfillment comes from contributing to the greater good and making a positive difference in the lives of others.
