BNSF 6751 had 5 out 6 traction motors go bad and I recorded the changing out the 2 back ones and only 1 of the Front ones. Reason I didn't continue to record was because it was repetitive and couldn't see everything with the equipment blocking the view. This video gives a general idea on the process. From Start to Finish it only took them 2.5 hours.

Great catch! I am still awed by the sheer size of these "machines" and have great respect for those who operate, maintain, and repair them. Thank you for posting.

It's cool to watch them preform a wheelset change on the road.

Generally on the road they just replace the wheels with wheels that don't engage the traction motor and tow the locomotive to repair. The way it blows out is that the wheels drive the traction motor and that produces sparks because it acts like a generator into whatever's wrong so they set out the locomotive. I suppose if they don't have dummy wheelsets available (no gear on the wheel) then they take out the traction motor and use the geared wheelset.
It looks like the motor comes out with the wheels and they're just replacing those motored wheels with unmotored (but geared) wheels.

That locomotive only has 4 traction motors. The middle axle is not powered and is able to be raised up for increased traction on the outer axles.

@@hillbillyrailfanthat’s a GE ES44C4, meaning it has four traction motors. BNSF and Florida East Coast Railroad are the only two Railroads to use this model in the US.BNSF use different variations of GEVO’s , ES44AC’s,ES44DC’s,ES44ACH’s, ES44C4’s.

Interesting how an unpowered axle still has the bull gear, I guess they’re all interchangeable.

GE ES44C4 is by AAR classication A-1-A (power, idler, power).

EMD E SERIES PASSENGER ENGINES WERE THE A-1-A WHEEL ARRANGEMENT ALSO, AND WITH THE EARLY WHEEL SLIP CONTROLS WERE VERY POOR PULLERS, WITH NO SAND AND WET LEAVES ON THE RAILS, COMBINED WITH AN LUMPY ENGINEER!
I WAS RATHER SHOCKED TO SEE THIS DRIVE SYSTEM APPLIED TO AN HIGH POWERED FREIGHT UNIT!
HOWEVER AS I UNDERSTAND, THEY CAN APPLY TRACTION MOTORS TO THE CENTER AXLES IF WANTED!
THIS IS NOT EASY AS THERE IS A GOOD BIT OF REWIRING THE LOCOMOTIVE!
THE E CLASS TRUCK WAS NOT ABLE TO ACCOMMODATE A CENTER TRACTION MOTOR, UNFORTUNATELY!
      OCCASIONALLY ,BAD IDEAS RE APPEAR!
      KEEP THEM ROLLING BROTHERS!!
      👍👍

Something must’ve burn up all four of the traction motors for them to take them all four out and replace them with idler wells so that engine will be dead in the water. It will be in tow. Until they get it to a shop to replace the four traction motors, I know BNSF quit buying. Those engines were just for traction motors, and went back to getting the ones with six traction motors.

They didn’t replace the traction motors. They are installing idlers.
