Thank you very much for trying out the Carboniferous Forest Simulator and creating this video! I'm one of the creators of this simulation, and your video and support makes us very happy :)
GrosserMagus Well i guess i have competition XD, i thought we were the only ones doing this kind of game i guess the difference is my game is a survival game and this will be a simulator were you get to study animals and the environment?
Ever heard of Gungan frontier ? This game was to my knowledge the only ecosystem stimulator ever produced. Why such a promising genre has not been more marketed and exploited is beyond me. I can very well imagine this project becoming a carboniferous ecosystem stimulator with time (and Saurian a maastrichtian hell creek ecosystem stimulator).
working on a project about anthracite and ended up here. the simulator is still downloadable as an exe from the original link! your browser might mark the link as unsafe but i had no issues running the program in a VM. it does use a lot of cpu though. what an amazing program, too bad it was abandoned.
Found this AMAZING app while doing an art project for school on Carboniferous period!! Why did the developers give up on it? =( If I had 3D modelling knowledge I'd totally contribute in further develop this app, such as adding animals & expand the play area.
This is amazing. I downloaded it as soon as I saw this video. The plants alone are awesome, but some Arthropleura and other beasties would make it even better.
Great job! Two more additions would make it fantastic: the huge dragonflies, millipedes, large swamp predators, etc. and a thunderstorm after dark with ghostly white lightning illuminating the forest briefly after each strike, followed by rolling thunder. I'd "visit" that forest often, if for no other reason than to remind myself how thankful I am we humans were not around at that time.
That's really cool! And once they add in animals, i think the night time simulator could be a legitimately scary game, if they also make it so the animals can attack you.
this is very cool & has a lot of potential! It might benefit from having different versions for different paleoenvironments, localities, or times. I see potential for a "quest" type of game too where you must find as many species as possible, maybe in order to advance in time...I'd like to see other geological periods represented, esp. if the animals for this program work well
@@palaeocast I'm very curious to know how you will select your games. Because there are a lot of games paleo-related, but many of them are very innacurate and almost fantasy like such as Adventures of Dino Riki on Nes or Turok series. I think that even Yoshi is supposed to be a dinosaur...
One day, we will be going to other planets, and some will be in similar stages of evolution. Learning about paleontology has made me look at other planets in a completely different way, I now see nature's work in progress.
Just now coming across this. I hope theres some news on it. Now I'm wondering if theres some public website with graphical assets for plants like this, that could be more easily co-opted into a simulator.
We've now created the Palaeocast Gaming Network where we review/critique/enjoy games about past life. I'll look at the Carboniferous Forest Simulator next and try and answer some of those questions for you.
I tried to use the program after downloading and installing it, but the dialog box in the center of the screen would not go away. I tried pressing OK numerous times to no avail. Solutions?
Fantastic! Thank you very much for this video. In the forest simulation, you can also set the view from above (-> Viev -> (c) Change camera). Unfortunately I can't put a screenshot in this comment. (Or is this possible?)
I wrote a sci fi novel called 'island at the end of time' and there's a place like this in it. I'm just in heaven looking at this because I can get inside my own novel. Is there any chance they'll make this work in stereoscopic mode?
What happened to this project? I went to the link, and it says it's still in the alpha phase. It would be cool to see the fauna and maybe a different clime, too.
Excellent question. I wonder if there are any clue in the plants used that would give it away. Any palaeobotanists out there? We'll be revisiting this game soon, so will get you some answers by then.
Palaeo cast awesome I was thinking about it, and from the video it looks like the mississippian period since most of the land is covered by shallow seas and Pennsylvanian is drier which allowed plants to spread out more do to having polar caps like today. Look forward to your video:)
This is not how the Carboniferous should look like. As a period of the greatest flourishing of life, the colors and environment must be more vibrant and happy looking. The plans are quite drab and limited. They can get more complicated and have a very bright green color, even with water droplets on them that reflect light. There were seeds, and some seed coverings may have bright colors to attract some animals. The sky can be bluer and more vibrant than today. Also animals should be included, which will be mostly peaceful and not moving much from their place, because they didn’t have much competition and many problems to worry about. Insects would be flying, but the flight should be more like dragonflies and birds, not the buzzing sound of modern insects. Also the sound of bush crickets is not accurate. Probably very few animal sounds existed back then.
"It's pretty buggy apparently"
Being that it's a Carboniferous simulator, isn't that a good thing?
glad I didn't have to type it out
Only if they appear in the late game:
Hemiptera: Temporal range: Moscovian-Holocene, 307-0 Ma
You people seem under qualified to give a tour of the Carboniferous… Maybe do some research before making a video about a topic….
@@charlesdu84 Maybe you could make a better one?
I haven't run into any bugs aside from the one visual rainbow one. Turn around and ignore it

Is there a "noclip" command/cheat? It would be nice to view entire swamp from the above ;-)
Arek Wittbrodt Just press "c" or select View/Change camera from the menu

Very cool bro. It would be nice if you develop the places of other periods also.
Congratulations on your software! Do you have any support to VR nowadays?
Oh how I would love to travel in time, and see things as they were. This is as close as one gets.

Ultima had a ecosystem
This makes my heart unbelievably happy. Amazing work ♥️
Looks very fun to explore, one direction that might be cool is if different biomes represent different time periods.

I read somewhere that in the carbon the color of the sky was sepia?
This really fun, im always wanted to see carboniferous period
You should try to play Saurian. The game is just before the K-Pg extinction and recreates a nice environement with actual flora and fauna.
We've got a gaming channel launching imminently. We'll be playing and reviewing all the paleo-related games!

Acanthostega? I thought they were extinct by the start of the Carboniferous.
Well, I'm an invertebrate worker, what can I say? I guess it could just be sampling?
this is awesome

How did you record video footage of the simulator? I want to do the same thing on my computer.
It was with the screen capture software X-Split. You need a paid subscription to use it.
Thanks for the info.
they used a time machine (duh)

Any android version?
I saw your latest video, but I didn't see the update to this?

it's Slender Carboniferous edition

they should add noclip mode
it`s btfl!
with an oculus rift! imagine that ^^
Have anyone seen any animal?
The developer had always planned on including animals, but never got around to do it. We think development has now halted on the game.
