Just bought this griddle the other day, it's the 22 inch black Stone and I bought the black Stone griddle seasoning and cast iron conditioner, which I'm fixing to season it here in just a few minutes. I had watched some videos on the seasoning of the griddle and noticed that most of them put the seasoning/ conditioner on theirs let it smoke and then after it stopped smoking they turned it off let it cool down and did it again. However, itcappears that this guy keeps seasoning it in between the smoke times & when it quits smoking he applies more of seasoning/conditioner, that's what I'm going to do. Happy cooking everyone!
Turn it on high for 20 minutes. Then add first layer of seasoning. Then wait till it smokes off. Then add second layer. Etc. want thin layers. Don’t want to much of it.
I used THC oil.....now everybody here has red eyes and are super hungry.....does that happen if I use other oils to season ? I'm scared......but happy....at the same time.
TIP. make sure the grill surface is level first. Don’t assume it is. My first application of seasoning ran to the back straight into the catch pan like I was playing air hockey.
My wife and kids bought me a 36" Blackstone for Christmas and they don't even know it yet. Getting it delivered next week and will use this process to season the grill. Seems to be the consensus view on how to get it started right. Can't wait to start cooking!
@@lucabrasi5070 So far so good Luca. Sonny and Fredo were supposed to join us last night but when they got word it wasn't Italian, they backed out. So far I've done 3 hibachi meals (Steak, Shrimp, Fried Rice and Veggies) and cheese steaks. My family absolutely loved how the hibachi turned out. Griddle is great - took a little bit to get used to how high to set the heat based on what you're cooking. Prep work is also super important so that you're not always yelling for someone to bring you something out to the deck that you forgot.
I almost bought the Blackstone Griddle Seasoning & Cast Iron Conditioner but when I looked at those ingredients I was not happy with the Palm, Canola and Soy Oils in there. So I just seasoned it with Avocado Oil. Came out great and did my first cook this morning. Onions, Peppers, Smashburger patties made with Organic grass fed meat and eggs. Nothing stuck and it tasted great. I'll stick with the more heathy oils. Worked just fine
I bought some of this when I picked up my Blackstone griddle yesterday. I had my doubts but I tried it and it worked amazing. I cooked fried rice for dinner last night and breakfast this morning. I was able to make eggs over medium with no problem whatsoever. It felt like a nonstick pan. I absolutely love my Blackstone griddle. My only regret is I didn’t buy one sooner.
Recommendations when seasoning your Blackstone for the 1st time. Some have been repeated here and some are unique to my experience. Wear a long sleeve shirt and something to protect your hand and eyes from sizzling oil. I'd recommend some sun glasses or goggles. This thing gets extremely hot when you fire it up for 10-15 minutes prior to adding the first application of seasoning oil. The Blackstone brand seasoning oil is more like a paste. When you first drop a spoonful onto the hot surface, that dollop will become a tornado of sizzle on the griddle. Hence the safety recommendations for hands, eyes, arms, etc as sizzling oil could easily reach your eyes. A Tip is to apply the seasoning paste or oil onto the paper towel first, and then apply using tongs. One table spoon did the trick for each application. (I got the 30 inch) This way you can spread it around without the sizzling tornado I described. The reminder is to go thin with each application and don't let the oil pool. I had to change paper towel during application to soak up any pooling oil. I repeated 4X and it came out really nice. Can't wait to start cooking.
Just received our 22" blackstone griddle. Was planning on using AVOCADO OIL. "1) My favorite steps on how to season a new Blackstone Griddle: 1-To season a Blackstone griddle, start by cleaning the metal plate or flat top grill surface with soapy water and a scrub brush. Rinse with hot water and dry with a clean paper towel. 2-Then you need a hot flat top grill surface, preheat the griddle on high heat for 10-15 minutes or so you have a hot griddle surface and have some discoloration across the griddle top." 3-Turn off the heat and let the griddle cool slightly. While the griddle top is still warm, add a thin layer of oil to the surface. "You can use Blackstone Cast Iron Conditioner or flaxseed oil, vegetable oil, canola oil, or avocado oil, or extra virgin olive oil. 4- Use a paper towels to spread the oil evenly across the entire surface of the griddle plate. 5-Turn the heat back on to high and let the griddle heat up until it starts smoking." This is when the fatty acids oxidize at the smoke point of the oil, and it means the oil has bonded to the griddle top. You'll want to repeat this 2-3 times or until you have a nice, even, dark surface across your griddle top. 6-Turn off the heat and let seasoned griddle cool completely. Once it's cool, wipe off any excess oil with a tongs paper towels careful to not burn yourself. You now have a clean Blackstone griddle and you can call yourself an expert on seasoning any other flat top grill. This is what I have read 6-5-24
Mine should be here next week. I received it as a gift from my company for 35 years of service. There were maybe 50 items to choose from. It was either this or Brazilian Rotisserie BBQ. I went back and forth for at least a week, watched TH-cam reviews, Google reviews, etc., and in the end landed on this because I have a fairly large family and the cooking surface on this beast allows for a whole lot of food at one time. I just purchased a Blackstone 22” Adventure Ready kit for our 5th wheel. After washing and thoroughly rinsing the griddle I spent 4 hours applying thin layer after thin layer of avocado oil to all surfaces. Allowing each layer to burn in and stop smoking. I probably put 15-20 layers of oil on it. It is completely black and slick as a babies butt. I love cooking on it, absolutely nothing sticks to it. It’s the perfect size for the 5th wheel.
@@jaydurham9017 Watch the video again, particularly beginning at 2:00. Listen to the guy and read the text overlaid on the video. Step 1: Clean your surface with soapy water. (this is the first and last time you want to use soap on your griddle)
I don't know how you made that look so easy! I used Blackstone seasoning and paper towels like you, and it started out just like you showed. Then the paper towel started shredding all over. I tried a wash rag, same thing, burned a hole in it. Anyway, half a jar of seasoning, a couple burnt fingers and some cleanup, and I made it, lol..
Good stuff. I'm not using paper towels anymore though. Use something lint free to spread the oil. Paper tower leaves little fibers as it breaks down. Maybe a bandana or something.
I experienced the paper towel bits all over the griddle too when I first seasoned it. The rough texture of the cooking surface ground the paper towels up quickly.
Just seasoned my grill for the first time. I was super intimidated. It was much easier then I thought. I would advise that you have everything ready to go for each time. I put on 4 layers. I’m excited to try cooking on it tomorrow!
I'm so glad I got my hubby this for Father's day. I set it up for him and got it all ready before he got home from work and he was so happy and excited! We seasoned it and made some delicious burgers. I don't think we'll ever cook inside again. 😂
Finally gonna use mine today for tacos on requestof my sons 18th bday.. wife and kids bought me one for 2022 fathers day and it's been in my living room since. Lol.. I think I'm ready!!! Thanks for seasoning tips!
For those who had the grill turn chalk white over the burners, read on. The first 2 applications went fine with high heat, then over the burners it started turning white, and by the 5th application, I decided to change tactics. I read somewhere in comments on a blog, that someone heard it should be 3/4 heat, but no one answered him. I also wondered when would you ever cook on high heat? So I changed to 3/4 heat and it started to brown again, and everywhere else was still smoking/burning off the oil, so it didn't matter. I then changed to a tick over 1/2 heat, applied 5 more applications, and it is all black now except the far corners where the lid would attach, but it will darken as I use the grill. Remember, you are only "wetting" the grill surface, there should be no puddling. Hope this helps. Btw, I have a 17 inch.
Very informative! Thanks for the easy to follow instructions. Especially the NO bacon. Had someone say bacon was one of the best things to cook the 1st time.
I got the pit boss steel top not the ceramic top that’s why I’m here not a lot information on the pit boss steel top , my seasoning doesn’t look all that great but I was able to cook eggs pancakes fish anything that is known to “stick” no issues, actually steel top I wanna the blackstone , ceramic the pit boss , but it was a gift from the wife CAN’T complain, good look with yours
My 28" griddle wouldn't get hot enough to season all the way to the edges so I used a blow torch to heat the edges until the oil would smoke off and leave a nice black finish! Point the torch slightly under the sides and aim up, slowly working around the whole griddle to get an even finish and properly protect the edges. Flaxseed oil is supposedly the best type of oil to build up the hardest polymer chain finish.
I just got a new one. My wife wont a 36" griddle in a raffle. Once the weather gets a little nicer I'm gonna start using it. Thanks for the great info.
I got my first Blackstone as a Christmas present, I followed this video for seasoning, I've cooke on it several times, the first time I cooked on it not anything stuck on it. I clean it it and season it after each use. I love my Blackstone. I cook on it right now everything weather permits. So I know I'll be cooking on it more if not every night. I wouldn't get rid of it for anything unless it was to break and I would be replacing it with another Blackstone !

Blackstone are high carbon steel (HCS), and although the care is the same as cast iron, the Blackstone, and all flat tops are HCS or Stainless in commercial kitchens, but stainless is expensive
Great tutorial and amazing product. Just purchased mine and seasoning as we speak. Getting a perfect color and can't wait to cook on it. I have the 36" with the extra shelves. There's always a (but...) I followed instructions to a T and started my first scoop with BS seasoning. I put it in the middle (Hottest spot) and that spot is colored and seasoned different from the rest of the griddle. Now, it shouldn't make a difference. Though, if I had to do it all over again, I'd start in the middle but at the front where it was not the main hot spot of the griddle. It should cook just fine though. After buying this amazing grill, I don't think I will cook inside ever again...
My Blackstone griddle resides in my garage and gets used about once every week. Because my garage gets used for many other projects from wood working to auto repairs it's often dusty. Since dust and dirt love to stick to oily surfaces like my griddle I came up with a solution. I made a grill cover out of the blackstone box the grill came in. A few alterations with a utility knife and it fits perfect over the top of the grill. Yeah I know I could have bought a grill cover but for now this works just fine. No more sawdust with my bacon.
Just seasoned my 28” 1962. Went over it 4 x after each snoke point was complete. The Blackstone iron griddle seasoning did the trick. However, the very front edge 2” didnt blacken. Potentially due to position of the burners or heat transfer to the very front will take longer. 🤷🏽. Ready to get roll’n with our first meal; maybe fried rice or just the morning E&B.
Are we supposed to keep it hot in between the times we add the seasoning? Or are we supposed to heat, add seasoning, cooking it off, let cool, then heat up again? I don't think it was mentioned.
I used pork lard to season, it worked great! Just the lard though, no sodium as well as no nitrates in it. If I would’ve known about the blackstone seasoning I definitely would’ve used that!
I got the same one for father's day and I did put it together it took me about a hour to get everything put together. Just following the directions step by step and everything will go together with ease

"Do not use bacon fat." Funny because as I was buying my grill today, one man told me to use a pound of bacon. I thought that anything that starts with a pound of bacon can't be wrong. Glad I watched this first.
I learned this when i started with cast iron. It failed EXACTLY as he said. I use flaxseed now (SMALL amounts and as thin as u can. Shake the bottle!) Can’t wait to try the official griddle seasoning.
Just a few things to consider when seasoning that I thought I’d share after just doing mine. I started to season in the afternoon which led into night time so I had to grab a headlamp. The first is if it’s on a uneven surface it will pool on the back and then go down the back side into the catch pan. Something else is that, out of all the videos I watched before doing mine, is everyone uses paper towels to season. One thing I noticed when I started to use the headlamp is i could see all the tiny fibers off of the paper towel going into my season. Idk if anyone else noticed that but it was super obvious with that kind of lighting. I went to grab some big gun patch cleaning squares and used those instead. They are more like a old t shirt than anything else. I managed to get all the fibers off but just something I didn’t want to season into my flat top.
Good think to inform people is to not turn your propane tank fully open. Only need to open the valve 1/4 to 1/2 a turn. In case of fire or emergency, you don't want to have to spend extra time shutting off fuel. One quick turn and fuel is off and can make a huge difference.
Oh hell yeah!!! Spring is here and I’m taking the cover off the griddle. Great refresh video. I’m up to my eyes in juicy canola oil so I’ll be using that to re-season. Get some!

Same here 👍
Me too! 🇺🇸
Yeah just season my 36" Griddle and I tell you I follow all directions but when I 1st did it. My Paper towel caught fire it was so hot !!!! But I got it under control. All in all it worked out perfect..
I did the same thing right slick as a babies bottom love my blackstone
Awesome!! So glad you love cooking on your griddle! Thanks for watching!
Was it brand new and you washed it first before seasoning it? How did you wash it?
@@jaydurham9017 Watch the video again, particularly beginning at 2:00. Listen to the guy and read the text overlaid on the video.
Step 1: Clean your surface with soapy water.
(this is the first and last time you want to use soap on your griddle)
@@OliverLeverittI would rinse with a little water after to make sure no soap residue
Paper coffee filters are lint free
I experienced the paper towel bits all over the griddle too when I first seasoned it. The rough texture of the cooking surface ground the paper towels up quickly.
I used paper towels during the initial wash step and noticed the paper towel lint. Thanks for the coffee filter tip
Use a good brand of paper towel. Viva
My husband bought me one today!!! I cannot wait to season it and start cooking. Bon Appetit
Just got mines today for Father’s Day and can’t wait ti get back home to season it up like this.
Me too! 😊
Same, I put mine together and it started raining. Had to hold off seasoning it. Today is much nicer so I'm sitting here seasoning it.
Me too!!!!
Same!

Okay, I'm HOOKED. Seasoned it, and made incredible cheesesteaks. THANK YOU!
Will be doing this on Thursday. Just picked up a 36inch. Cheers to the Blackstone Family
Built my 30" today...seasoning as I type! :)))
Just picked up mine today. I feel like a kid at Christmas.
Just seasoned my grill for the first time. I was super intimidated. It was much easier then I thought. I would advise that you have everything ready to go for each time. I put on 4 layers. I’m excited to try cooking on it tomorrow!
Also, I used the blackstone seasoning he showed in this video.
Did you use a wet paper towel to apply the blackstone brand seasoning or a dry one ?
I'm so glad I got my hubby this for Father's day. I set it up for him and got it all ready before he got home from work and he was so happy and excited! We seasoned it and made some delicious burgers. I don't think we'll ever cook inside again. 😂
Lucky him!
Thanks. You are right. Once I turned the heat down some, it started blackening the corners.
Wonder if this depends on the size though? I just got the 28in with air fryer
Good advice ….. turned down for 3 & 4 back up for 5 & 6. The whole top has a nice color. Ty
Remember, it’s not how big your grill is, it’s what you cook on it!😊
Very informative!
Thanks for the easy to follow instructions.
Especially the NO bacon.
Had someone say bacon was one of the best things to cook the 1st time.
Just finished seasoning my BRAND SPANKIN' NEW 36" Culinary! Looks beautiful. So excited to start cooking 🍳
Watching again. Going to get my propane tank and will watch again before seasoning my griddle today. Can’t wait!!!
Just got my new black stone for Christmas, about to use these steps to season it for the first time!! Thanks for the info!
me too!!
Same💪🏼💪🏼💪🏼💪🏼 bout to fire this mf up right now
I got the pit boss steel top not the ceramic top that’s why I’m here not a lot information on the pit boss steel top , my seasoning doesn’t look all that great but I was able to cook eggs pancakes fish anything that is known to “stick” no issues, actually steel top I wanna the blackstone , ceramic the pit boss , but it was a gift from the wife CAN’T complain, good look with yours
Just got a 36" w/lid and I'm so glad I watched this video before I started using it
Thanks for walking me through my first seasoning. ❤️
Son buy me 36" for Christmas...seasoning it right now. Love tha video very helpful...can wait to use it for tha first time
My 28" griddle wouldn't get hot enough to season all the way to the edges so I used a blow torch to heat the edges until the oil would smoke off and leave a nice black finish! Point the torch slightly under the sides and aim up, slowly working around the whole griddle to get an even finish and properly protect the edges. Flaxseed oil is supposedly the best type of oil to build up the hardest polymer chain finish.
Would Grapeseed Oil be comparable?
@@michiglenn I'm not sure on that one, sorry.
Do you season it the same way after cooking on it each time?
Got this as a mother's day gift. Thank you for the video! Cant wait to crank this baby up!! 🤘🏾
So did I! I'm just now putting it together. Hibachi for dinner tonight, it is. 😊
@@Mrsquick awesome! We use ours 2 to 3 times a week. Especially on hot days when you don't want to heat up the whole house 😂 we absolutely love the blackstone!
I just got a tabletop one from my wife and bought the seasoning and the adaptor and seasoned it 4x. I’m madd excited to use it, thank you for the tip and video 🙌🏿👏🏿👏🏿🔥🔥🔥.
How is table top version working out for you 2 years later ? Im wondering about buying one for my outdoor kitchen.
@@Knasern it’s working excellent! I use alot to make steak hoagies and definitely smash burgers and the griddle has it tasting just like a restaurant. Very good investment
I have suffered long enough without a BlackStone..Going to pick up a 36" this morning..Thanks for the Video
I'm amazed the guy with sweet beard and Blackstone shirt recommended the Blackstone seasoning paste!! Genuine!
Just got mine for Father's Day,about to do this right now after watching this video!! Thanks for the heads up.
The protein fat thingy you said explains the issue I had with my 1st gen griddle. Thank you for the tip.
We're glad we could help!
Purchased the 30” today from Lowes. Putting it together tomorrow and then seasoning it! Excited!
Doing mine from Lowe’s right now!
Thank you for the tutorial , I am going to season mine today. So excited to get going!
just bought mine doing it when I get off
Great video guys thanks. It worked perfect. Mine did it exactly like the video when i followed step by step
We're happy to hear that!
Just got seasoning my new grill following these steps and the seasoning oil. Worked great. Thank you
Blackstone are high carbon steel (HCS), and although the care is the same as cast iron, the Blackstone, and all flat tops are HCS or Stainless in commercial kitchens, but stainless is expensive
Perfect video for someone new to the griddle. 🙌🙏💪
Just bought 1 the 4 burner. I can't wait till I season it And cook on it love you guys.
This is exactly what we love to see! Keep on killing it there Mike!
How’s it going so far? Any tips?
Got a 17 inch griddle for my birthday! Cannot wait to use it 👏👏
My Blackstone griddle resides in my garage and gets used about once every week.
Yes. Front and back takes little longer. Will blacken over time.
Are we supposed to keep it hot in between the times we add the seasoning? Or are we supposed to heat, add seasoning, cooking it off, let cool, then heat up again? I don't think it was mentioned.
About to season mine. Did you leave on or turn off?
@JohnTheNovelist I left in on and it seemed to work fine.
We just got a Blackstone flat grill. Best grill I've ever owned.
Really felt like you were talking directly to me.
Got my first BlackStone for Father’s Day! Seasoning today and then smash burgers are on the menu! Thanks for the video🍻
I used pork lard to season, it worked great! Just the lard though, no sodium as well as no nitrates in it. If I would’ve known about the blackstone seasoning I definitely would’ve used that!
I just bought 2 of the 36 inch blackstone grills. I can't wait for the weather to break, so I can do some serious cooking !!
Had the 28” / air fryer combo delivered this morning. Seasoning this afternoon with the Blackstone seasoning. Thanks for the video!
Did you put it together yourself?
I got the same one for father's day and I did put it together it took me about a hour to get everything put together.
Just following the directions step by step and everything will go together with ease
@@rolltide9547 we just bought one and picked it up today. It took us 1/2 an hour to assemble, but I had to insist my husband let me use the directions vs. guessing like a lot of men do.
Bought myself the 28 inch griddle and it’s my first time using one!
I use expensive flax seed oil. Works amazing for me.
I love that you brought science to seasoning. I argue so much with older people about what it actually is. 😂
Just got a 36” as a graduation/bday gift! They got it new from Walmart for $202 because the lid had a dent in it! Hahaha
Great video. Very clear and concise. Just bought our first blackstone product and looking forward to firing it up
This guy is amazing we had no problem seasoning our grill Thank You so much
Just hooked mine up today! Straight up to the house (natural gas)... Seasoning it right now! I'm excited to try this thing...
How’s you do that?
@@joeltroughton3021 I have an outdoor hookup that connects to the natural gas source for my house. When I got my Blackstone I also got the natural gas conversion kit. So basically my blackstone is connected to my house.
I thought the same thing. Pulled the bacon out of the freezer. Happy I watched the video before cooking my Baconn🤗
The instruction book actually says you can use rendered fat.
@@cathycoltman1436 I bought pure Waygu beef tallow. No preservatives or nitrates.
Just got my first Blackstone last night . Super easy to put together. I have the 4 burner with Air Fryer. Can’t wait to cook on it. Thanks.
Dude that’s the one I wanted, ended up giving in and getting the 36” griddle…I’m in love with it!
How do you like the air fryer?
Just used this for my fist seasoning and about to cook a big ass breakfast on this thing now. Thanks!
Just bought mine today. Can't wait to get cooking on it.
Just got ours. Did you season it? If so, with the same thing he used?
Just got mine today, had to come on here and check out some recipes, can’t wait!!
@@tonyaduncan4351 You NEED to season it. Its not really an option if you want to use the flat top correctly.
Good think to inform people is to not turn your propane tank fully open.
Only need to open the valve 1/4 to 1/2 a turn. In case of fire or emergency, you don't want to have to spend extra time shutting off fuel.
One quick turn and fuel is off and can make a huge difference.
Thanks for the info guys! First Blackstone I’ve owned, seasoning it now! 👍🏼🍻
Just bought myself the 36” for my birthday, assembled today. Looking forward to my first cook!
How hard was it to assemble? Nine is en route
Just finished seasoning can’t wait to cook!
I got mine !!!!
Excited for this cooking, similar to restaurant style cooking.
Thank you..
Just got mine put together and headed to pick up the seasoning now! How long do I need to wait after my last layer, before I can cook on it
It’s 10pm and I’m doing this as I’m watching this video. 👍
I just received mine today. I can’t wait to go home and put it together.
Picked up my new 36 inch Air Fryer Combo on Friday and cooked on it each day since...it is amazing and I’m loving it so far!
That's great to hear! Thanks for being part of #griddlenation!
Just got mine put together today. Hitting Walmart up and getting this seasoning stuff in the morning and going to do this when I get home!
Got our Blackstone together and got the seasoning as recommended. I am going in. Thanks
Oh hell yeah!!! Spring is here and I’m taking the cover off the griddle. Great refresh video. I’m up to my eyes in juicy canola oil so I’ll be using that to re-season. Get some!
Can we season it the first time with canola oil?
Yes that’s fine.
@@griddlegary2312 oh heck! Hubs said we only have extra virgin olive oil and vegetable oil. We just purchased ours and putting it together. Making sure we do this the right way. Thanks for your help!
You’d be fine with either but canola is cheap and it’s good if you plan on using griddle often
Great video,. I just got my first Blackstone which we will use mostly for camping. I followed the video to the letter( Fellow nerd ) but would add a word of caution if your Blackstone is smaller like mine( 22") maybe less oil, perhaps 1 to max 2 TBSP of oil.
I just picked up my first black stone can’t wait to use it. Would you use the same process with flaxseed oil?
Hi just bought my first griddle and getting it ready thanks awsome video
