Love how he mentions whatever drummer he really listened to, not worrying whether the name will impress you. (Clapton in contrast seems to have a built-in instinct about whether "I was influenced by Muddy Waters" will make him sound more important than "I was influenced by Freddy King.") For whoever cares: The "Sonny Boy" Levon is talking about is Rice Miller, a talented local harmonica player who on a local label impersonated the real John Lee "Sonny Boy" Williamson, who had recorded hits for a subsidiary of the biggest record company in the world.
Humility and class ... Most of us today lost than long also ... Levon represents a time-gone-by in real musical talent and respect ...Respect for others before him and things going on today around him ... I tip my hat off to you today and forever.
Me also ... I watch alot of his videos where he explains music and can't understand it but he makes it sound so simple to do ... Like his video on drumming and singing ....
I worked the morning shift at KFFA in '73 - '74. I knew Sonny Payne well. In fact, on a few occasions I sat in for him on THE KING BISCUIT PROGRAM. Wonderful memories.
I absolutely love the man, everything about Levon, my son is named after this wonderful person, and my son is proud of it. Rip Levon, you have made me feel what music is.
its GREAT isnt it....he also talks about the 'main tickle' of a drum part, and demonstrates the 'back beat' like nobody else.....this man is an American treasure
Levon Helm, without a doubt is one of the finest musicians that ever graced the stage. Saw the Band in the early nineties with CSYN in Hartford . They owned the show. People sang along with everything they played. They will be missed. In today's music nobody can compare. Miss you, thank you, R.I.P.
Always a joy to listen to Levon. Great historical photos.Terrific to hear how he got lured by the drums. Great twinkly eyed mentor. Oh, and "more cowbell."
Love just seeing him talk about his early influences! I grew up listening to him and after all these years still love listening to him. Keep his music alive!! Keep playing his music :-)
Great documentary. Thank you for posting this video. He will always be one of musical heroes. He had a magical blend of so many musical influences. RIP and viva the memories of Levon and The Band members.
I grew up in Phillips County Arkansas in the 50's and 60's. I remember a lot of things in this video. The building was the old Helena National Bank Building. KFFA radio was on the top floor, I think.
Wow, amazing you thought that, because the same exact thing happened with me. I still think Bonzo's the greatest ever, but when you combine being a great drummer AND great singer, Levon was really without peer. I didn't really get into him until much later on. I guess it was because he was just a humble dude who didn't seek out the spotlight.
F'ing incredible to listen to Leon explain music ... Roots? You want the roots to American music, R&R music? Listen to Leon ... Albert Einstein was a genius. Levon has his place here also in music ... He can break music down to its basis ... I'm from AR also and happy to draw out Levons name when asked about famous people from our state ...
We’re so lucky people realized how much of a treasure he was. It’s almost as if they didn’t. But when you see stuff like this you know he was appreciated from the beginning
Charlie don't surf either ! Seriously though, Levon was the quill. So many talents, including later on as a movie actor. Showed the young 'uns the ropes. The Last Waltz....
I'm sorta' embarrassed that it took me so long to identify Levon as an extraordinary drummer. My heroes were Keith Moon and John Bonham and even Neil Peart but really, he was a much better drummer than any of them. He was a fantastic musician and artist. What a guy!
poor Ginger Baker. Back in the day he was considered the best and took on all the jazz greats in epic drum battles. He could do stuff that nobody else could.
I know he's kidding but there is nothing fake about Levon or any members of The Band Every show I Saw them was great especially at Watkins Glen in July 1973
Levon Helm, what a genuine Southern gentleman. What humility, what class.. what a loss.
RIP Dear Levon.

I could listen to him talking forever.
Me also ... I watch alot of his videos where he explains music and can't understand it but he makes it sound so simple to do ... Like his video on drumming and singing ....
Had the pleasure of meeting him once, and his smile, closehand, was nothing short of beaming.
I absolutely love his slow southern drawl/twang. "On the pee-anna (piano)". I too could listen to him talk or sing all day. ❤️
I couldvlisten to him _playing_ forever.
@@davebowman6497 oh yes and singing forever

I can listen to Levon talk for hours... I love how he pronounces "S's"
Don't you just love these old stories? Love how he calls his toms the "tenor tub" and the "floor tub."
In another video, I heard him refer to the hi-hat as the "sock cymbal".
its GREAT isnt it....he also talks about the 'main tickle' of a drum part, and demonstrates the 'back beat' like nobody else.....this man is an American treasure
@@custerranch Sock cymbal was the original term for the hi hat. Sock, like 2 socks together, that's where the term comes from.

"It's always worked for me."
And you've always worked for me, darling Levon.
Great documentary. Thank you for posting this video.

This is superb. Thank you, Levon.

Love Levon and love King Biscuit! What a timeless talent!
thank you for posting. thank you for sharing Levon.
Levon : a great soul man
it sucks this is only a 5 minute video. I could sit here and listen to Levon talk for hours on end
He one best musician ever. ..I could listen to him sing an play.all day long ... he is dearly miss. ... 💔
I could listen to Levon tell stories all day. He's a legend in my mind!
He mentioned Al Jackson from Booker T and the MG’s, man oh man I’d like to have heard Levon and Al play off each other in Allman Brothers style.
Nice reminiscences, nice playing and nice accent. :-)

On my phone I have a picture of a sign outside Helena AR saying The Levon Helm Highway. Next trip I am going to Turkey Scratch.
Good history, R.I.P. Levon
What a modest gentleman one of the greats .
Thanks Levon. Hey if you folks don't know it yet, Levon was an actor as well. check is movies, I Like The Right Stuff 1983 Great film!
I love Levon's rhythms. I just noticed a bit of smilarity in Levon's playing to that of Charlie Watts, but Charlie doesn't sing ;)
Charlie don't surf either ! Seriously though, Levon was the quill. So many talents, including later on as a movie actor. Showed the young 'uns the ropes. The Last Waltz....
I love the smell of napalm in the morning.
Traditional grip both of them have.
The floor tub, your baritone tub.
My Lord always
He was a very very good
He was a very very good Drummer
It's hard to believe that he's been gone 10 years
one COOL DUDE!!
did Charlie ever sing?

agreed except for KM
Ronnie Hawkins said Levon could play more music with less licks than any drummer he ever saw.
@Harry Abma Good comment
Imagine a young Levon with that accent. So adorable and cute and hung like a horse. Lucky Jemima!
How many folks do you know of that can do 6 different things at the same time .... brilliantly and incredibly easily .... not many I suspect !
And so on...
Please don't forget about levon,!!
Ya see how he twirled those sticks?
Why the glove? Looks?
I remember reading it was to help with arthritis.
MORE COWBELLS !
We know now where the cowbell came from!

Too bad Ginger Baker was a terrible, terrible person. Utterly repulsive human, he was.
