      I also think this was the most effort put into a cereal box prize ever made. And boy did it make waves compared to other lame prizes.
      I mean lookit some of the old commercials in this vid. One prize was a terrarium....an even more absurd prize than a re-skinned cereal-themed DOOM mod.

      Let's be real, none of us kids ate that shit cereal but we begged our mother or father to get it just for the game and no one ate the cereal after we stuck our entire arm down the box. Well if I remember right it was in a paper case glued to the inside of the box.

    It's one of those "you had to be there" kind of situations I feel like for the most part. Although in this case it was also "a had to be then", you had to be there, then the importance of this at the time. It really was a brilliant gateway creation disguised as a promotion. A brilliant way to get kids too young for Doom into something carefully like Doom. Slightly subversive and yet corporate all at once, brilliant.

      I already had Doom (I was 10 at the time) and used to burn through CDs of shareware. This game was so easy and short that I have no nostalgia for it other than knowing it exists and I played it hahah

  • @APV878
    @APV878 2 ปีที่แล้ว +41

    My brother and I had the game, from a Chex box no less. That was an interesting time as we also had (shareware) versions of Doom and others in the late 1990s when we were in High School. I had no idea how long it's managed to stick around all these years from the fanbase.

    • @battra92
      @battra92 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I only had the shareware of most games thanks to PC gaming being so expensive (the opposite of today ) Chex Quest was one of the few complete games I owned and thanks to it's relatively low system requirements meant I could play something relatively current.
      It was a great game and it still holds up today.

    I remember that, as we moved into the nineties, the good cereal giveaways increasingly involved saving multiple proofs-of-purchase and mailing them in, which they knew a lot of people would never bother to do. It's impressive that they managed to include such an impressive prize in the box itself at that time.

  • @GELTONZ

    I can confirm the effectiveness of this promotion. I had never eaten Chex before, but pack it with a free game? I was in...and fell in love with Rice Chex. We bought many more boxes and I had so many copies of Chex Quest that I gave them to all my friends. I still snack on some Chex every now and then and I never would have before had they not tempted me with a free game of Doom.

Then I found out there was a game inside it when we got home and I played that thing for weeks. I still play the series and was a big fan of the remaster from 2019. My sister gave it to me from some Chex she bought for my niece. Loved that game even though it was basically doom. Had a few other copies from other cereal boxes I gave to friends. Oddly it was one of the games I could have on the computer without it being blamed for everything wrong with the PC. It wasn’t uncommon back in those days for parents to either visit sketchy sites with Java wide open or open every last email attachment and when the inevitable virus showed up to blame it on the video games.

    My very first Hotmail password was a CQ cheat code because it was the fastest thing I knew how to type at the time and I knew nobody would come close to guessing it. Even today some of my most frequently used keys are crazy combinations and permutations of the dev names that comprise some of those same codes with different other words letters numbers and symbols.

    11:47 was really interesting to me, is there any videos of people going over these levels?

    .....this is the most obscure episode yet. I'm impressed.

    I dig the crown glasses. We didn’t play Chex Quest at my house, we were playing Doom at the time. It was the opposite with me as a kid, I was more excited about eating cereals based on video games rather than video games based on cereals. I had Donkey Kong, Pac-Man, and Nintendo Cereal System, or whatever it was called. But my favorite would be Gremlins, which wasn’t a game, but the one I recall the most. It was like a sweeter Captain Crunch. I regret _all of it_ though, grains, carbs and sugars would be my undoing for the bulk of my life. I _would not_ do any of it over again. Imagine being sad about failing health while literally crying over the food that’s causing it, and of course, _not knowing why…_ Thanks FDA. There’s plenty of lawsuits waiting in the wings, especially _these days._
    (Special note: that sadness was expressed _more than_ 20 years ago. I am old…)
    Great Stuff, as always!

    Now we need a Sid Meier's Pirates-style strategy game retooled for Cap'n Crunch.

    I have never in my life heard of this.
    Are you sure this isn't an elaborate Galaxy Media stunt?? (I kid, I kid).
    Great as always!

    I would play the hell out of a cereal themed Mario Kart. Cap'n Crunch in his Cap'n Cruiser, Toucan Sam in his Froot Looptie, Count Chocula in his Cocoa Carriage, Lucky the Leprechaun in his AutO' Gold, someone write these down! ✍

    I didn’t own it, but played it at a friend’s house. However, I DID have a copycat Mr. Pibb game from McDonald’s (on a floppy disk, mind you) about a school where all the students and staff have been turned to zombies.

    A video about a cereal brand promotion, being sponsored by a differing cereal brand, is kind of interesting in and of itself.
