This man could explain hyper-threaded quantum computing to a rabbit and that rabbit would then be the leading expert. Love your videos

I wish all who posted videos were able to clearly describe, and walk you through the "how to" like you do. IMO, you're one of the best out there!

Thanks for making this video. Even tho' it's 2yrs old, the instructions, although slightly different in the newer version of the app, they still fixed my prob.

I watched this video hoping to learn more about how / why you must acknowledge having scanned a tag before the automation will run. You precisely and clearly answered all my questions, Thanks!

I’ve been using the Shortcuts approach, but having it call a Home Assistant webhook. Using events with Home Assistant looks easier! Really good video, as usual.

Hi Juan, great tutorial thank you. Is there a way to scan an NFC tag and play an album or playlist on TH-cam music and cast it to a Google Home speaker group? Or maybe creating an automation in Home Assistant, then scanning the tag in the Home Assistant App?

I was finally able to get my NFC tags to run something without having to tap a notification in iOS today thanks to this video.
One thing I have a question about, does it matter which NFC tags you buy really? I notice the ones I have sometimes take several seconds to actually register that I scanned them to run the automation. Not sure if it's the tags themselves or whether that's "just the way it is".

Great Tutorial, Juan. Especially how to get the automation running in iOS. It is easier on Android. Thanks again!

Thanks Juan! Just what I needed. After getting my wemos D1 mini connected to HA, the tag setup was a breeze with your help. My Android phone works great with no extra settings/notifications stuff. I do have to have my phone unlocked before tags activate, but I'm OK with that. Cheers - Eric

You can change that in your nfc settings on your Android.

can you 3d print a waited platform to stick the tag on, can you also create actions (for differant devices) that connects/disconnects mobile devices to/from bt headsets using these and can you setup a action (when tag is tapped) and do another action when you're out of a location?

Using an Android phone I have discovered that the plain white tags can trigger an automation without opening the HA app. I also tried using tags designed for outdoor use (they look like a thick black washer) but they require the trigger to be automated with the HA app open. There must be some differences between tag types.

Another great video.. really learning a lot from you. I ordered NFC stickers to use with homeassistant... so suppose I have one automation linked with one nfc sticker that will open the garage door. Would I be able to know that whose phone was used to scan the nfc sticker ???
    Kindly reply

I learned the hard way that if you don’t want home assistant to prompt you .. don’t add the tag to home assistant .. It will still work as long as the event name is the same in HA and Home .. also u can take the event name and listen for it in node red and do much more

I tried using a tag to send an announcement. When I type the announcement and hit save it forces me to rename it. When I do that and close HA and come back then DO part of the automation is now gone. Anyone know why?

Do you know if there are standalone NFC readers I could use instead of my iPhone?
I though about using NFC tags so that my little kid can start playlists on a smart speaker by himself.

I wanted to put an NFC tag outside my apartment to trigger a Ring Intercom Unlock command. However, since I am not in my home network outside my apartment building, it doesn't work because the phone isn't able to reach the home assistant instance. I do have a VPN configured and could do stuff like connecting to VPN first, and then executing the "fire event" but it's unreliable and very slow. I ended up exposing the "event" via Homekit Bridge and then using a Homekit automation to fire the event. It reliably, and swiftly accomplishes what I want.
Just in case someone wants to fire an HA event outside of their home network.

Worth noting that this method won't work on an iPhone 8 Plus. I tried and apparently an app needs to be open in order to scan a tag on that model :(

No Shortcuts app on Android, but I’m sure there are reasonable equivalents. (Is there an obvious choice there? If so, perhaps Juan will do a video covering it!)

@@MichaelAlderete On Android when you scan a tag, HA knows immediately (no notification to click) so the whole "Shortcuts" hassle isn't required

I have one more question: can I somehow switch off the notification that still appears even if it runs directly via shortcut? I would like that nothing appears on the display when the automation is triggered via the TAG. otherwise a really great video and very well explained. Thank you very much
