I Used to play accordion with this band BEFORE John Stevens. We were Charlie Lavrisky's Musical All Stars then. I had to leave the band because of my job as a New York City Police Officer. Charley and the guys are still the most talented musicians I ever played with.

I have been listening to Polish Music for 45 years. The bands used to have clarinet players that did the same thing, playing sharp or flat to the 440. When I asked a leader of a Polish band and very exceptional musician - he had no idea what I meant. I think they trained their ear to hear it correctly, though it was out of tune. My father had button accordion that was tuned 444 and when I asked why, it was so the accordion could be a little more distinct that the brass. Drives me nuts, but my father could never hear it. I guess it's what you grow up with.

Why would anyone "tune" an accordion to 444? Do you even know what that means? Nobody in America would tune an instrument to 444, and this makes no sense. If by button accordion you mean a slovenian type, like a Melodija or Rutar, they have either 2 or 3 sets of clarinet reeds. THe reeds are each tuned differently. One set is generally at A = 440. he one set is sharp, 442 or higher, and one set is lower, 438 or lower. The "brightness" comes from combining two or more sets. When you drop out the A=440 set, you are left with the greatest out of tune tone, one low, one high. This is what accordion players call the Musette sound. For anyone to say their accordion was tuned, 444, means they didn't know what they were talking about. If ALL THREE reeds were tuned to 444? There would be only a dry sound, no warble at all. Accordion players generally don't know their ass from a hole in the ground about how their accordion is tuned,,,, hence we get statements like "my accordion is tuned 444. No, it wasn't........perhaps one set was tuned 444.
THink about this........... IF your relative's accordion was tuned A=444. When it came time to tune, the horn players and the bass and string players woudl tune to what? THe 444 of the accordion? If so, then the accordion would not stand out any more, would it? Conversely, if the other players all tuned to A= 440, especially since the guitar and bass play on a tempered scale, then you would have a band that sounded like an animal caught in a leghold trap. Like this one. So painfully sour that turning up the volume will get rid of moles in your yard. Sorry, if this guy is so experienced, he woudl be able to play in tune. THis is a mess.

Why not just let the old guy have his moment. He is having fun and not hurting anyone. If it doesn't bother John Stevens, it shouldn't bother anyone else. If you don't like it, turn it off, don't criticize

Well all I can say is that the band is so good I couldn't tell if Charlie was out of tune or not.

For the love of kilebassa............ would it have been too much to get a violin player who could play in tune? That was so sour my fillings fell out.

Am insult is saying something about someone that isn't true. My music credentials far exceed Charlie's and my sense of pitch does as well. His violin playing is so out of tune it made my Antares plug-in blow up.
He is HORRIBLY out of tune.

A "professional accordion player" So like Charles Magnante, you earned all your income from the accordion? You played in bands, that makes you a hobbyist. The intonation at about 12 45 is like nails on a chalkboard. Sorry man, but if you post something on TH-cam, it needs to be tight. I am sure he is sweet guy, but on this video, his intonation is horrible.
