Lula Mae Collins (Lula Joyce Joshua) was born Jan. 18, 1948. The Gospel True members: Lillie Mae Neely and Hattie Mae Brown (twins, Hattie was born 15 minutes before Lillie): Nov. 30, 1944, Clara Mae Luckett: Dec. 3, 1940, Ollie Mae Butler: March 7, 1943. Lula died in mid-April of 1994 (Complications from Lupus). Also deceased are Hattie and Ollie of The Gospel True. Here is a factual piece of history from music historian Marissa Fortunata: "“Lula Collins, had she lived longer, would have rivaled all the ‘gospel greats’ of today. She was often referred to as ‘The Delta Gospel Queen,’ because she traveled and performed in Delta churches in the 1970s thru the mid-80s...The ‘Delta’ also includes Arkansas, Louisiana and Tennessee. Unfortunately, most of her live performances were not recorded, and there are few other recordings located on her. The few we have are gems. The story has been told that she performed so well at a Shirley Caesar concert, for which she opened, that Ms. Caesar, shocked at Ms. Collins’ stirring performance, told the emcee that if he didn't sit Lula down, she (Shirley) was leaving. Listen to [Lula] sing, and you will understand why the great Ms. Caesar felt threatened.” I used to run a tribute page for Lula over a year ago, and in my research, I became friends with various family members online, and have had wonderful conversations with Clara Luckett and Lillie Neely of The Gospel True about their days in the Gospel spotlight.
