    $150,000 TRUE VALUE OPEN
    Landmark Recreation Center, Peoria, III., Feb 18-23, 1985
    Hannahs Repeats As True Value Champ
    Ted Hannahs found a second home in Illinois as he successfully defended his $150,000 True Value Open title. Victim of Hannahs' title defense was Bob Handley, who bowed, 215-190, in the title game. Handley had won three other games in the nationally televised (ABC Sports) finals to get to the championship game. He first ousted Steve Fehr, 202-157.
    After Fehr's exit, Handley really got zeroed in on the finals pair, blasting Art Trask, 268-192. Handley then found himself against Steve Cook, fn the semifinal test and in the seventh frame had trailed by 42 pins, before sailing in the winner, 203-193, after Cook missed a three-pin in the 10th frame.
    In the title game, Hannahs got off to a bad start when he missed a 3-6-9-10 cluster, but Handley evened the breaks when he suffered a 4-6-7-9-10 in the very next frame. From there it was nip and tuck into the 10th frame, but Handley just couldn't catch up in the late going.
    CHAMPIONSHIP ROUND

    Thank you, Mr. Bowling! This brings back wonderful memories of Saturday afternoons -- that great brass to open the telecasts; the kindly baritone of one of broadcasting's true gentlemen, Chris Schenkel; and the youthful enthusiasm of Nelson Burton Jr.
    Always like seeing big Steve Cook. Never forget when he started with the first 10 in the title match at the '81 Firestone.

    Many of us think that that Bob Handley was one of the most exciting bowlers to watch in the 1980's. He generated a tremendous amount of power- and fan reaction with his delivery, and definitely brought the two commentators into this match. I always rooted for him and felt that he should have won more tournaments. I was rooting for him in this match. However, when I saw Mr. Hannah's baby daughter in her pink dress after his victory I felt happy for his family. The little girl would be 34 or so now. Time flies, for sure. Mr. Handley is just about 70 now!

      Agree. I was 22 that year and we always called him “crankin’ bob handley” because of that huge hook, which by todays standards isn’t that much. He and steve cook snd mike aulby and Pete Weber were the Anthony and Roth and petraglia of the 80s. Great shows!

    You're very welcome. I have the 1981 Firestone with Steve Cook winning posted somewhere on youtube. That's one of my all time favorite shows! Glad you've enjoyed what I've been posting.

      He was my hero when I was a kid bowler. If you didn't crank, you were a wussy....lol. Now that I'm in my 50s, I see what a bulldog like,say, Mike Durbin was with his straight line style. So damn steady and tenacious he was. Watching all these now, you see how sound the down and in player was. Weird how you see things when you get old...😉

    Just a reminder about Hooking Bob Handley: the average teacher salary in 1985-86 was $25,000/year. Going on the tour was totally the right thing to do financially.

    The conditions were tough if you came up high in the pocket. Never take any spart shots for granted. The two Steve's were winners off the lanes. The ABC camera has always loved Candi Cook and Nancy Fehr was herself gorgeous. There was nothing like bowling on Saturdays with Chris and Nelson and then watching WWOS with the legendary Jim McKay.

    Bo's words about certainties in bowling always lead to disaster: "Count this one in the bag." Nope! It happened so often over the years with so many bowlers, it was like the Kiss of Death.

    interesting contraption that Hannahs is wearing on his arm. it's definitely not a wrist support, but either a homemade device or a medical support, perhaps to prevent him from cupping his wrist too much.

    it was often asked if the bowler would rather be top seed where all they have to do is win game for title or 3-4-5 seed who is better acclimated to the lanes. I myself, especially HERE would rather be 4-5 seed so i have a potential 4 shots at a perfect game. I have heard question answered many many times and not once have i heard MY answer lol. surprising

  • @katanakeith1

    Bo said if Fehr took one of his fingers out when bowling,he would get zero for that shot because it's illegal but, Gary Dickinson always takes a finger out of the hole to shoot his spares and he's not penalized.

    • @Igloo3471
      @Igloo3471 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      katanakeith I would assume that's because Fehr had 5 holes in his bowling balls (four fingers and the thumb) because of wrist problems.

    • @lanceschaina3084
      @lanceschaina3084 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Every ball is allowed one unused hole for adjusting the balance of the ball. For Gary Dickinson, who doesn't use a balance hole, the unused hole is acting as the balance hole. No violation.

    I looked up Mr. Handley wondering if his body of work was enough to be inducted into PBA HOF. 4 in a row? that should be enough BY ITSELF. Any info in this regard would be appreciated
