Amazing skills indeed. A work of art which will last the lifetime of Tevita and steer her true on many an adventure 🙏🏻 and yeah, that’s one heavy hunk of tree 💪🏻
That was a humongous lump of wood to deal with considering your lack of the right tools. You did well to drill through that depth and come out close to target. Great video, many thanks, keep them coming please.
Its a tricky job accurately drilling deep holes! It may have been thrown off by the arc of the support wood. The bottom of the support stayed still, so as the drill moved it got lower.
Was that originally a railway sleeper, by the pattern of holes? Greenheart was usually used in docks and piers as rubbing strips as it's very durable in water, and really tough too. One way to determine if it's greenheart is to chuck an offcut in the kitchen sink...it should sink, as it's SG is more than 1000kg/m3. Not all woods float!
Yes it was :) And i'd heard the same about 'Green Heart' sinking... I did try a piece in water but it was quite a thin off cut and so had a certain amount of surface area - it didn't actually sink but then again i wouldn't say it floated well either! I have a 'chunk' that i'll try with to be sure. I was thinking as the rudder was just so heavy that the water would take some of its weight - which i suppose it will - some - but not as much as i'd hoped lol! :) Still, it's good to know it's a durable timber! Cheers!
Oh mate you have done an amazing job on Susanna. When I first saw the boat I thought that it woutake a couple of years to restore and get back on the water but that shows how little I know about wooden boats and how little I knew about your skills ! Fantastic episode. I can't wait to see the launch and I hooe to see you on the water 👏
My background is in both Theatre carpentry as well as painting, Houses, Theatre & film sets, signs, murals etc. I'm kind of 'handy' and know the tools - although i knew nothing about boats. I suppose i can understand the concepts quite easily because of my theatre background, building unusual and sometimes quite complicated sets - although boats are far more unforgiving than theatre sets! I don't make a living from boats at all...
@@savingsusanna yeah you seemed very comfortable with all the jobs you are doing including the engine take down and rebuild. Is this type of engine 'easy' to work on?
Cheers for the heads up 👍 I do try to get the volumes all balanced, by the time i'm doing that though i'm usually pretty tired and what i think is 'pretty good' at the time later on seems not quite so lol! Cheers :)
Love the commentary and the honesty
Thank you, appreciated! :)
Nice work on the rudder well done😊😊
Thank you! :)

@savingsusanna I meant Tevita not Susanna 😃
Yeah fair play - i knew that :) 😉
Thanks
Cheers for that! 🙏 :))
Mind saying what your trade background is? I'm wondering if you're a shipwright and make a living fixing boats or if it's a side job.

Yes, That was a single cylinder engine - it was pretty easy as engines go! :)
Well done
