Here we want to say a huge thank you to the companies helping us to rescue the wooden boat. To Walinga Transport for arranging and organizing the transport, to the lads from the Shipyard Lemmer for bringing the boat from A to B and also to the Watersport Centrum Sneek for offering us the storage place and being extremely supportive and helpful all the way through. It's a blast to work together with true professionals and with people who really know what they're doing. Thank you!
Josh should start his own channel I'd love to see how he progresses in his refit. I think a good temporary shed over the boat should be his first step. Thank you guys for facilitating the restoration of this beautiful old vessel.
I would love to keep you updated on this project and film the progress from time to time. Together with Josh we made a step by step plan. The first step was to get the boat transported to a place where it can stay. Now the second step is to protect it from the elements and preserve the engine to prevent further damage. Until Josh has the time to tackle the caulking of the boat and plank repairs together with a yard specialized in wooden trawlers.
@@FlyingConey Sounds like a good plan! I'm well into the restoration of a neglected 62 year old wooden boat that's in far worse shape than this one, so if any of you guys have any questions feel free to shoot me an email (it's in my channel description).
I keep thinking what a fantastic picture it would make to have both boats returned to their glory . . . sailing together! All of you did an amazing and wonderful thing. Thank you!
There's not one refit boat on TH-cam without multiple negative comments beneath the first video that it would be better to scrap that specific boat. You have to be a little bit crazy to take on such a huge challenge but I always say, you can't buy a new boat with history. I'm glad that we found Josh and that he's willing to restore the wooden boat!
What a great story! I can't wait to see what happens to this wooden boat! During the Covid lockdown my best friend saved a 50 year old Butterfly sailboat hull. His sister told him if he didn't remove the hull from her barn, she was going to burn it! He dropped the hull and its centerboard off at my cottage and said "Here's a project boat for you!" I hadn't sailed other than twice while on vacation since I owned a beat up hand made dingy when I was a young boy. A week later I won an ebay auction for the boom and sail for the boat. I traveled from Wisconsin to Michigan to pick them up and while there the seller also sold me the rudder/tiller for the boat because that ebay sale fell through from the previous auction winner! I enquired if he knew where I could get a mast for the boat and he put me in contact with a person from a local yacht club. We made a deal and I bought a mast! I had the excitement of a young child on Christmas morning during the drive back to Wisconsin! A few more weeks passed by and I finally obtained all of the other rigging and mast head for the boat! It was late August by then. I sailed the boat until mid October that year and almost froze my toes off! The following year I named her "Muy Chido" I am so grateful to my friend! I realized that sailing is one of my most favorite things to do!
Great video, as a former big wooden boat owner/fixer I appreciate what you’re going through we have marinas in Michigan that don’t even allow wooden boats dock sad thanks for saving this old gal
There was no specific reason why the yard didn't want to have the boat on their property. It's their right but I better not tell you what I personally think about their behavior. We're not the only ones having had problems with that specific yard. We even helped an elderly German guy to bring his yacht to a new harbor. He also couldn't prolong his stay on the hard even though he found unexpected problems. They simply lifted his boat back into the water although they had plenty of space on the hard.
In the US, boat yards often get stuck with wooden boats. They are often cheap to buy and 1st time buyers with little money and experience often take them on. They come out of the water and lots of deferred maintenance is discovered. The owner is overwhelmed with the work and the cost and sometimes just walks away. Marinas gets stuck having to cut these boats up. Fiberglass and steel boats also, but far less often. Also wooden boat maintenance involves a lot of environmental concerns: sanding, painting and so forth. Marinas avoid lots of these potential liabilities by just denying all service and occupation by wooden boats and their owners. If you want an unfriendly boating environment, come to California. Not only do they despise wooden boats, they make it very difficult for any and all boat owners.
Thank you for your complement. I personally think that workboats are an important element of maritime history. You will always have people fascinated in racing or luxurious yachts. So those are preserved very well and there are still plenty around. Workboats have a much harder life while being used commercially and afterwards often simply scraped are neglected. But I think it's important to rescue those boats that are still around because they all tell their individual story and are very unique compared with modern vessels. That's what I love about Flying Coney and that's also the reason why we rescued the wooden boat originally named Triton and one of the last existing Belgian wooden North Sea trawlers.
@@FlyingConey I could not agree with you more than I already do on this topic and your conviction and sentiments of "doing things for the greater good". Thanks for the awesome summary, I’m sure that there is a message in there, a moral to the story, but the simple fact is that you are both kind and generous people and you are passionate about your boats. I’m so happy you found a deserving and passionate buyer as well and that everything turned out great for all the people concerned.

Thank you for doing this Sir. To me boats are living things and they deserve to be protected just like animals or human beings. Once again, thank you !
Happy you did find the proper Frisian boat yard people with a Can Do attitude! Wishing Josh all the best with the project. An update now and then would be very nice!
I'm super happy that you saved that beautiful boat. A few planks and re-culke, paint, varnish inside. It's floating. You pulling that boat behind all those cars and trucks to the new yard was funny 🤣😆😅 🚶♂️🛶
I'm sure once the signs of 5 years of neglect had been removed she will be a true beauty! It speaks volumes how little the boat suffered from this period. Not an easy project but it's absolutely worth it!
G'day Crew, What a great story . The boat looks like a champion , and a great restoration project for the right people . On the upside we've learned quite a bit about wooden boats, about project boats and about ourselves. In many ways we're not the same anymore as six months ago.
It's funny how these stories often surround old wooden boats. I had similar difficulties when I purchased my Tahiti... many problems, despite her only weighing 9 tons, and able to make way under power...one of the first yards I called asked me "well... who do you know that I know?". That was discouraging, until I found out my boat used to belong to somebody known to EVERYBODY in the sailing world from Boston to Baltimore, who was in the area that summer. I like to think my reckless commitment to this insane enterprise was rewarded in this way; with the community that welcomed and helped me. It's a global community, and you two are shining stars. Josh could not have done it without you. To Josh, I say: welcome! And remember that actually rounding Cape Horn in that boat will be more straightforward, maybe even easier, than the preparations needed first.
What a story truly amazing very glad you help to sell the boat and get involved in buying it its a beautiful ship ,very well done .be so enjoyable to watch it grow .best wishes robert
Hello.. Wow... To buy a wooden Boat, sized like this and in this condition, you must be a real Enthusiast.. And a little bit crazy.. You got my full Respect.. Great Job.. Greets..
Hi Daniel and Barbara, We love the way you saved the Jan Koning III. Let me introduce us in a few words. We are Hans and Tineke, Dutch, we own and sail a yacht. We are impressed by all the phone work you had to do. If something like this comes by again we’re more than willing to take on the phone marathon in Dutch. Thinking this would be easier. Don’t hesitate to contact us. Love Hans &Tineke.
I saw Jan Koning III afloat 20 years ago needing work. Beautiful boat. I lived on the old wooden z548 in Rotterdam once... didn't manage to save that one though.
What a adventure! Wow ! But I was thinking how about painting the inside hull of Flying Coney with Rust encapsulator or rust preventer then start installing wood beams for a temporary floor , it would give you a good start to install bulkheads and furniture !
Haha, I love that you played USA southern music in the video! So nice of you to save this beautiful boat! If Josh thinks JKIII will be in the water, yet alone cross an ocean, in 3 years he is day dreaming in colour. This is a ten year project. 🙂
Being optimistic, believing and containing the drive, are how old stuff survives. The "naive" people that do "it's not worth it" stuff, make our world at better place to be. I did personally once use 8 years on restoring an 60's car and I have never regretted that "mountain climbing" experience. Despite it took way to much time and money. Highly satisfying seeing that car being reborn.
I think you did a great job in saving a wonderful boat. It would have been a shame to see it disappear into the annals of history when its in such good condition.
I think you done very well in what you achieved for the wooden boat she absolutely gorgeous inside with the woodwork someone put a lot of work to finish her like that glad you got a buyer for her she had to be saved helpfully tosh will update how she is coming along you saved flying cloney now you have saved another one well done she is a huge boat good luck to tosh 😊😊
Great to see the wooden boat and really nice job to save it, although the stress levels must off been really high, Lets hope the new owner can get it restored.
I'm not complaining here because we thought we could do it and we managed to do it. But I've never experienced so much stress in my entire live. It was absolutely crazy and that's the reason why we only want to get into consulting and not into project management. Although we could certainly do it and it's well paid the costs on health it high.
Fabulous story and yes heritage boats like this need saving. the difficulties of moving any object so heavy and bulky are daunting. It seems as though fate smiled on you in the end though. There are ever few places in Europe where this sort of project could take place ...there are a few in the UK that undertake such work but in the US you have to head for the NW.. and BC Canada. Sailor Barry is part of such a cluster of owner repairers...he is a BC shipwright and has been advising on repairing such a vessel as well as living with his tattooist partner on their wooden boat Thunderchief. The boat he was advising and working on was in a bad state so he taught the owners how to repair first the frames and then replace the planks. He would have loved to work on a vessel like this. I really hope this works out for the new owner. A much smaller project but local to you has been Mark from Wilding Sailing and his 42ft Wharram Pahi project he rescued 18 months ago and has now repaired. He eventually found a helpful yard where they allowed him to haul out then anchored whilst he lived and worked aboard... He has now got his mast up and motors installed but he needs to build a deck shelter so he can move further south to complete his vessel Mahi Mahi ..and become a live aboard sailor.. it might help all as he has made friends locally and it may help to reach out to another circle of local boat ⛵ fans. 👍🏻😎🧙🏻♂️🇬🇧💙.
The Jan Koning III or formaly known as Triton is one of the last remaining wooden Belgian Trawlers and a very beautiful example of such a North Sea fishing vessel. So I'm very glad that this boat gets a second chance. Here in the area the best yard for a wooden trawler is the Bültjer Werft in Germany. Not far away but a bridge in Groningen made it impossible to get the boat there. There are also two yards in Denmark and of course T. Nielsen & Company in Gloucester UK. I'm not to familiar with the wooden boat scene in the USA but I think wooden boat yards are located relatively close to the Canadian border on both costs. Sailor Barry is certainly someone I would ask for advice in this regard. I was one of his first subscribers when he had published only two videos about the good ship Providence where he was the first mate. Before we found Flying Coney we really searched for a similar Danish ketch. Best regards!
What a adventure! Wow ! But I was thinking how about painting the inside hull of Flying Coney with Rust encapsulator or rust preventer then start installing wood beams for a temporary floor , it would give you a good start to install bulkheads and furniture ! Maybe it’s time to focus on Flying Coney and just build a new interior, with used wood reclaimed wood and new wood , God Bless you both !
This channel has just become more interesting! As with The Tally Ho, these stories draw in viewership. Port Townsend is now world renowned for it's welcoming atmosphere and it would be great to see that build occur in a similar fashion...talk to the shipyard, please!
I'm sure you will find an interior for Flying Coney and when you do you will still have to modify it to fit. No doubt you will add to your boat refit skills with more skills in wooden boatbuilding as you fitout the interior.
Great video. Look forward to updates. Also, do you list somewhere the music credits? Who is the singer and song on the video? Thank you from Halifax,Nova Scotia.
hi guys, just a word of advise, when doing a long piece to camera, please put the camera on a tripod. makes the content look way better. all the best , hear you soon.
We made this video while being underway and I've talked quite a bit making it a little bit hard for Barbara to hold the camera steady. So our old tripod was still on the boat. However it was one of those cheap ones with a fluid head but without a ball adjustment making it harder to adjust it. So we decided now to invest in a medium quality tripod.

The unimog what can’t you do with one of them I wish josh well with his restoration project
Although we could certainly do it and it's well paid the costs on health it high.
...jolly well done!
Nice one guys!!
Well done 😊
Best regards!
nice work
What a adventure!
You are a hero
You are amazing 💕⚓
Leuke video,weer genoten 😊😊😊😊
Move over Alfred Hitchcock , Daniel is the new master of suspense 😊 excellent job on video had me on the edge of my seat .
This channel has just become more interesting! As with The Tally Ho, these stories draw in viewership. Port Townsend is now world renowned for it's welcoming atmosphere and it would be great to see that build occur in a similar fashion...talk to the shipyard, please!
Nice boat.
Subscribed.
Thank you from Halifax,Nova Scotia.
i laughed so much about the self-closing doors ha ha ha
Being the owner of two wooden boats I understand the frustrations you had trying to move this one!
Congratulations on saving the wooden sailboat
Fantastic news that the wooden boat is going to have a new life. 2x👍
Love that song!
Who is the artist please?
I am glad you found a new owner it would have been a shame to scrap such a lot of history in this fine lady of the sea
Beautiful sailboat🎉 ❤ what is the measures of his??
Why do I think about “Tall Ho II” ….?
The school of reality is very expensive. But now you have experience :)
Look forward to it finished. 😂
Hi I'm looking in from Shropshire England 🕊️
I sure hope that this new owner has: lots of money, lots of time and lots of knowledge. Take it around the horn. Wow, quite an ambition.
Seeing it fully rigged and on the water will be worth all the stress.😂
Barbara and Daniel von der Water-Kant!
Just roll on bottom paint and move to key west already..no consulting fee.. on my part😂🎉
I would have fallen in love either...
hi guys, just a word of advise, when doing a long piece to camera, please put the camera on a tripod. makes the content look way better. all the best , hear you soon.
There is no "free" education. Everything you learn, you pay for. You just learned a lot. Congratulations!! Now, on to the next lesson......
