A kit that is famous for its difficulting in build. I love large scale models. Keep pushing, friend.

I've used E-6000 on deck plates like those on 1/350 scale ships, it gives you some working time to get things in the right place and doesn't fully cure for around 24 hours.

I'm in a similar situation to you - I made this model back in the 80s, and it still sits in a glass display case. I've always wanted to do it again in finer detail, using the Great Little Ships enhancements, and recently found the Revell kit on Ebay. I'll be using photo etched brass for the first time, too. As you can imagine, this video series is going to be of vital assistance, so thank you very much for doing it. One thing that I immediately looked for was how you dealt with that over-sized thick stem and keel 'bar'. You filed it off and replaced it with styrene strip. Other people have just filed it off and left it so that the bow comes to a fine point. If you have any further thoughts on that I would be grateful. Anyway, thanks again - I shall go through all your videos before doing anything with the new model. Subscribed. :)

Thanks for subscribing Paul. As regards the keel, it's going back a few years to when I originally started the build however I recall seeing some pics online showing the kit keel being ground off and replaced with the Evergreen strip...can't find them now of course....also, while you are at it, place a divider between the hawse pipes where the anchors sit to prevent a see-through effect on the bow....I neglected to do this and it's too late now.

@@smallscalefutures The hawse pipe see-through ; I've just looked at the model I completed in the 80s, and you're right. I'd never noticed that before, so thanks hugely !

These lovely little boats were the backbone convoy protection for pretty much the entire length of WW2.
I love all the photo etching there is available for them, but during most of the fight they were constantly battling the massive build ups of snow and thick ice all over the superstructure prevalent in the extreme North of the Atlantic most of the year round.
Yet you never see anyone covering this aspect. In the perfect world you would normally show the model as she looked the day she came off the blocks - yet not how she would have looked battling Atlantic arctic conditions, this is such a shame as it would make a great stand alone diorama of the arduous task the crews faced just to simply keep them afloat in the first place, one individual crossing would usually require the crew to manually shift thousands and thousands of tonnes of nasty snow and ice from them. it would be really cool (pun intended) to portray one of these brave little ships in the way she would have spent half her life at sea and a great homage to their brave crews, there are literally thousands of photos of them in this condition.

So looking forward to your build. I’ve got the original Matchbox kit as well as the revel one bought in the early eighties as I recall.
Got it down from the loft and have literally over the last month got all the GLS fitting sets which I have to say are excellent in detail and certainly will take the kit to the next level and some.
My plan is to build it in the near future so you starting the journey ahead of me is fab.
Like you I have sanded down and off the keel etc so lots to do before I even start.
Look forward to following your journey.
    Kindest Regards Gary

It's certainly a challenge Gary but well worth the effort. Glad I can be of assistance 😄

Oh, an ambitious endeavour as none other! 62.484 m (205 ft) means a model of 86.783 cm in length o.a. (34.167 inches), resulting in a sizable ship model (a ship is any ocean-going vessel 200 ft [60.96 m] or longer).
I envision a sea diorama of the vessel engaging Revell AG's 1:72nd-scale kit of a DKM Typ VIIc U-Boot (German nomenclature and spelling), as you mention at 40:27. Depicting combat damage in a ship model of this size and scale would be interesting.
I understand some kit makers offer models of torpedo boats (PT boats) in this scale, that would make a dramatic diorama. Or perhaps a replica of a Focke Wulf FW-190 Patrol Aircraft or a Junkers JuU-88 Torpedo Bomber making a strafing run.
It also might be entertaining to build two in different painted camouflage schemes.

Interesting to see you using the DJ Parkin upgrade, they have a short forecastle conversion kit advertised on their website as 'coming soon', it's been like that for 10 plus years and I'm still waiting for it!!!! 😒

I've considered buying this kit several times over the past decades but have always decided against it. Mainly because it is such a crude kit, with clunky details. It almost seems like the kit was originally intended for a smaller scale, maybe 1/144, and changed to 1/72 at the last minute.

    • @smallscalefutures

I think it was always intended as a 1/72 but was a product of 1970s technology. All of Matchbox's kits suffered from over-simplified detail and the only thing they really had going for them was the choice of subjects which were a lot braver than Airfix at the time
