      @@Jondoe_04 I don’t go to church, my faith wavers and ebbs and flows over time. I don’t choose the path of devotion like I should. I’m pretty self-centered and fearful a lot of the time. Sometimes I struggle to believe in the resurrection. I don’t pray like I should and it feels awkward when I do. A part of me still holds back. But, I learned a few years ago about the value of faith. I noticed Christianity is the most reviled religion in our modern society and that made me interested in looking into it. I used to be a bit of a conspiracy theorist and I guess I realized the ultimate conspiracy theory is God’s real. He must be because I believe the devil, and sin exist. And Mr. Reeve’s videos about Tolkien and Lewis, I respected these intellects and come to find out they believed and it lit a tiny spark of interest in exploring the Bible for myself. So it’s just been a journey thus far, but I’ve yet to surrender myself completely and utterly to His will, I suppose is the jist of it.

    • @kaneinkansas
      @kaneinkansas 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Mine did, and he was Jewish. His love of the humanities and art, and the trajectory of Western Civilization left a lasting impression. His love of the mosaics of Ravenna eventually sent me there. He taught that Judiaism found the near-sacrifice of Isaac as the foundation of the special relationship between God and Abraham's descendants. But I realized immediately, that this was a foreshadowing of what God had planned to do for us with his son. Abraham's willingness to sacrifice his own son on behalf of God may have made God all the more willing to return the favor, but for all of us. He loved Plato, he loved the Iliad and the Odyssey, and the sculpture of the ancient world. I think everyone needs to have the class I had with him.

    Great to see you back Dr Reeves! Your knowledge and evenhandedness is unmatched in the religious TH-cam sphere. As a Catholic from Argentina I struggle to find good content in English that understands the Roman Catholic Church, specially from other branches of the Church. You, however, are the notable and welcomed exception. I learned so much from you about the Reformation inspired religious traditions that I can't thank you engough (that was something that was sorely lacking in all my religious academic learning form kindergarden to my philosophy degree at a Catholic university). I regularly return to your videos when I'm in the mood for some religious history. I don't know if you'll return to that kind of content, but any content from you is sure to be interesting.

    Hey just started this video but wanted to say thank you for your content. You are truly a man after God's heart. I do not have a degree in history or theology (I am a microbiologist) but every video i have seen here has been a blessing. You are honest and succinct.

    Rembrant actually conveys the lesson of the story very well. The father is God the father. The son is the repentent sinner. The brother represents the tut tutting, disapproving, law bound pharisees (whom Jesus refers to as ‘whitewashed tombs’ - dead on the inside). To my mind, the painting conveys the message of the story at a very deep and personal level. God’s eternal love transcends all sin, no matter how bad. All is reconciled and forgiven in the moment of repentance. In other gospel stories, Jesus teaches that the return of the sheep that is the most lost is his greatest joy. Rembrant was at a stage in his life at which everything had been taken from him (like the biblical Job), and going by his earlier self-referencing painting of the prodigal son in the brothel, would have had some unresolved guilt about his own misdeeds. In this panting, Rembrant appears to seek consolidation in an all forgiving God of love as Rembrant is also at an age at which he hopes to be soon reunited with his wife and son in the afterlife (God willing).
