I met Joe and his Mohawk at this year’s Sun&Fun Airshow in Lakeland, FL. His enthusiasm was infectious. He loved the plane.
    God bless his family.

"You're sitting at the front of a flying brick, so it's very twitchy but good control, good maneuverability - *as long as you've got airspeed and altitude, if you don't have that you're a dead brick."*
Eerie... RIP to a dedicated warbird steward and aviation advocate.

Greetings from Newport. I remember seeing an OV-1 on approach to the Salem airport, inbound from the north as I was driving east on Mission street headed to Bend, and nearly decapitated myself rubbernecking watch it land. Since the airport here in Newport, which is very rarely ever busy, installed an ILS several years ago, I've seen all branches of the military, and occasionally Boeing, using it for approaches. Cheers Jeffery Blackman, Thank You for your service.

When I was about eleven years old, now 67, near my town of Winnsboro South Carolina, north of town, was a small grass airport that belonged to the town. Only a couple of planes were hangered there. At that time Vietnam was getting hot. The army was on maneuver or training for that war. This was my first time seeing the Mohawk. :They had several of them flying from the grass airport a couple of days all day. :That was the first time I had ever seen a military aircraft close up and the sound of that plane was so cool. I remember hearing them land and had to use their reverse props to slow the plane on landing. I remember this like it was yesterday. What a cool aircraft. On the other side of town is where I got my first look at the Army Skycrane helicopter in action.

I was with the Mohawk unit on maneuvers in 1964 at a little place I recalled being named Lugoff, SC or something like that. I remember the 1964 election of LB Johnson occurred during that time. We were there several weeks testing new army air assault techniques. It was the 11th Air Assault Division and in July 1965 it was re-flagged as the 1st Air Cav and we were sent to VN in August 1965. Just wondering if that was part of what you saw?

Dr. Joe (owner/pilot) gets a little over-enthused when talking about the attributes of his OV-1D Mohawk, #958. While the Army did equip them with .50 cal guns and 2.75" rocket pods (18 rockets each side?), there were no bombs dropped from Mohawks that I ever heard of. By the time I got to fly them in 'Nam the only unit still flying armed 'Hawks was up north; the 131st flew into Laos, Cambodia and NorthVietnam, so still had the armament. This aircraft served the US Army from 1959 through the Desert Storm action and they were retired from the Army inventory in 1997. It flies very well but is a handful at times: low and slow do not make for longevity. It afforded the 2-person crew great visibility from the cockpit, allowed for both vertical and forward photography, side-looking airborne radar, and infra-red photography/detection of hot targets. The OV-1 Mohawk Association is a group formed around this Grumman aircraft; they don't own any Mohawks but the group is open to anyone with an interest in the aircraft, its mission, etc., and meets annually (2016 will be Washington, D.C. on September 22nd).

This plane and it's ability to do CAS was one of the reasons behind the Key West Agreement follow-on called the Johnson-McConnel agreement in 1966. (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johnson-McConnell_agreement_of_1966) The USAF gave up a lot of their helos, the Army gave up it's small fixed wing transports and the arming of it's fixed wing assets, including on the Mohawk.

Don't know where to start. .50 Cal? Yes, early in the Viet Nam years. 2.75 Rockets? Yes. However, a 2.75 was not a zuni. The 2.75 rockets were used on and off on the OV-1A throughout the Vietnam years until the OV-1D was introduced late in that war. 250 and 500 pound BOMBS? Uh...I don't think so.

He is wrong about the photos of Mount St. Helens. That was 1980 and these were decommissioned in the mid 90’s.
