Totally agree with this. Hard work and so smart. Give them an inch and they'll take a mile. Wonderful breed if brought up well. Wouldn't be without them.
Mine is a lot of maintenance. Very needy and has anxiety if he doesn’t have his normal daily routine. He gets up at the same time, goes to bed around the same time, expects his two meals per day and is a Velcro dog always wants to be with his person or a family member. At 11 years old he developed the dreaded bloat and that was a 6k plus emergency surgery 😢. I’m really lucky though my dog has been healthy throughout his life. We have always cooked his meals from chicken to ground beef, rice and carrots or celery along with kibble. As well as everyday I tell him he’s an amazing dog and that we love him. I think that helps them live longer.
@caveworld7849 In my experience, the euro is way more athletic, slightly shorter, chunkier and extremely playful with family members and guests after a short feeling out period. BUT, my American is taller, smarter, off-leash ready to go anywhere, and in constant guard mode. He also produces a much deeper scarier bark and growl combo, but he's slower and looses to the euro in games. Love em both but again, in my experience the American is a more attentive guard dog although the both do phenomenal. Hope that helps haha!
I’ve had Dobermans my whole life. Yes they need to work and I love that about them. They need the training and attention. Super super smart which is one of the reasons I love them so much. So easy to train. But you have to have an alpha personality to own one. They will be your most loyal friend and family member. ❤
Dilated cardiomyopathy and hip dysplasia are also pretty severe health concerns for Dobes. I’d also draw a distinct line between American show line dogs and those who were bred to work and protect, as Dobermann himself originally envisioned. Two very different standards, especially when it comes to things like overall temperament and the need for physical/intellectual challenges. TLDR: If you’re thinking of getting a Dobie, know what you’re getting into, and know that a working line Dobe almost certainly isn’t for you unless you’re a werewolf triathlete or a late 19th century tax collector/dog catcher tired of being robbed. 😂
Got 2 EU dobies. One out of work lines rescue. No socialising at all came at 13 months old. That's much harder than just a pup work dobie. But now almost 8 years old. Amazing dog

There is one other medical condition the Doberman is prone to that was not mentioned. Von Willebrand's disease is caused by a lack of a protein that helps in the formation of clots when the dog is bleeding. There is no cure, but it is managable, but you have to know BEFORE any surgical procedure or any injury if your dog has it. Testing is simple and can be done at your vet's office.
Have a dobermann and a doberdane. They have a period from between approx 6/8mths to 2+years when they enter "raptor" phase (velociraptor) - a lot of doberman owners acknowledge it. Unfortnately you see a lot of dobies being re-homed during this raptor/teenage phase because ppl didn't do their homework.
@@NeverFollowTheCrowd They just lose their shit basically 🤣 Do dumb stuff, go thru' multiple weird fear periods, destroy toys, furniture if you don't set very hard boundaries, are VERY physically active, .... velociraptor in a fur suit. 🤣 They get over it all about 2 - 2.5 years in.
My dobe is 5 and definitely a challenge. I compare her to having a 3 yr old toddler. It's about the same amount of care. Lol. My Dobe is very intelligent which means she is stubborn n doesn't like when I do any activity that doesn't include her. Definitely loves her daily walks n yes they do require exercise n stimulation. I can attest to this. This is my 2nd Dobe. This video did make me worry when I heard the health issues. She will be 6 in May n is very large Dobe with very very broad muscular chest. Hearing they have chest issues also worries me. So far no health issues n I pray that continues 🙏 🤞
I’ve had several since the 70’s. Currently have two, one is a large intact European male. We live on a large property, so they get miles of exercise and they are great protectors. Interestingly, there were construction workers working on our barn a bit away from our house and they just sniffed them and came back to me. When the same person approached our house porch, where I was sitting, they went into complete protection mode and held the guy away from me. I was able to call them off. They seem to understand context. Ours are rarely on leash. They wear proximity collars utilizing GPS coordinates. My observation has been that females are slightly more protective of their human and males absolutely protective of territory, especially intact. Both can get the job done. We crate them when we have guests. They have the speed, weight and strength to bring down a large man and inflict serious harm. My large male has brought down and killed a deer in seconds. I’m certain a human will not be a problem. This is not a breed for everyone. I feel totally comfortable, security wise, with two Dobermans watching out for me. Not sure they’d be the right dog for me in a home with small yard. Maybe an older rescued Doberman would work in that scenario. My older dogs in the past have not needed too much exercise, but they need mental stimulation their whole lives.
I'm planning on selling ice cream in the park on an bike. Because I'll be dealing with (hopefully!) some good money, because I am petite, because I will work in the evenings in the long summer months, I thought I might get myself a doberman to protect me and accompany me. What kind of training would my dog require? (I had two dobermans as a baby) People will get close to me when they give me money. Clients will often have their own dogs with them. So I need a dog that's reactive...just in the right occasions :) What should my dog learn? Thanks :) PS: I'm watching all your videos :))
From my experience they're usually pretty friendly with people but if they sense something is off they will square up. Dogs however depends, there are some he gets along with and some just not so I would recommend extremely well socialising. They also need a lot of physical and mental exercise cause they are extremely intelligent. Which also does make them easy to train once they've bonded with you.

If prospective owners of a doberman read just these comments, no one would ever get a doberman. They can be a handful no doubt, but so are most dogs in one way or another. ALL DOGS ARE WORK, PERIOD. He never sees other dogs and gets crazy when he does. Not in a bad way. He just whines and carries on because he wants to go see them. Hoping to desensitize him. 🙄

large differences in the American and European standards. I have both and can say confidently they behave extremely differently.
I have a hybrid Euro-American Dobie. He has the best traits of both and we couldn’t be luckier to have him.
Which is better?
Mine is mixed half European half American. He has a lot of anxiety and needs a routine. However, he is a big puppy overall.
Depends what you want. Euros are better at guarding and Americans are better at being family pets

Now I own a Doberman I would never want any other breed.
