Losing Situational Awareness While Flying

  • As well as sharing the positive aspects of my flying, I feel it's only right I share video when I get things wrong. On a recent flight to Shoreham in the PA28 the other week, I lost situational awareness and made a pretty big mistake. I'm sharing this video to help others learn from this mistake.
    I have to say this is probably the biggest mistake I've made so far in my flying hobby, and one for which I am not proud. Thankfully, ATC spotted my error, and quickly issued corrective instructions.
    This had been a high workload flight on a turbulent day, starting with a Class D zone transit:
    (video here: • PA28 Transit of Gatwic... )
    Then shortly before joining for Shoreham I had to take evasive action to avoid a collision risk.
    (video here: • See and Avoid - How li... )
    I was asked to circle overhead Shoreham before being cleared to descend. At the point of arrival, I had checked the airfield plates, and knew which runway I was landing on. Sadly, while circling, I lost this awareness, and in my mind, I was joining downwind for runway 07. In actual fact I was downwind for runway 25.
    I apologised, requested instructions, and corrective action was taken. After landing, I rang the tower to apologise again, and to see if they wanted to discuss the incident further with me.

    I've done exactly this in my early flying. Really horrible feeling! Well done for sharing. Huge respect.

    Thanks for sharing this - there are pilots who have done this and pilots who will do this. Great learning for all.

    Once one has acknowledged he's made a mistake. it's important to focus on the task at hand and continue flying. Don't fixate or become obsessed with your mistake because that can degrade your performance and put you in a "slippery slope of mistakes". Wait until you're safely on the ground to de-brief and discuss the incident. Very good video and thanks very much for sharing! Most people wouldn't share their mistakes so, credit to you for letting us learn also!

    It's not easy, all this going round and round! I like jwood237s comment that "there are pilots who have done this and there are pilots who will do this". I suspect he is totally correct in his observation.

    Hi, thanks for sharing. May next time when you are unstable on final it's safer to go around. Unstable for example, flaps are not set greater than 10 degrees on shorter final or idle power for longer periods on final. Idle power for longer time on final on a windy day and correct glide path can be an indication of close windshear. Always good landings, greetings from Brazil.

    Great video and Im sure youll learn from your mistakes, and it takes a man to admit them and upload to TH-cam. By the way I love Shoreham (many great childhood memories there) but i do find their landing fees ridiculously expensive, prohibitive even which makes me think I should land elsewhere such as Deanland, Goodwood or Swanborough Farm.

    Good video. Shoreham can be quite a workload on any day. I would have left the flaps as they were for take off, especially off of grass. Nice flying.

      +The Flying Reporter - I trained at Surrey and Kent back in 2006, and know how busy Biggin and pretty much any airport in the southeast can get. Many enjoyable flights from Biggin Hill being a member of the Met Police flying club. I live in Malta, flying diamond DA40Tdi. a very different life here I can tell you. Have you done the Alderney fly in? It's a great trip, and very sociable. And approaching Alderney is quite something!! I must upload some of my Go Pro footage!!

    • @TheFlyingReporter
      @TheFlyingReporter  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Tim Kirk it's very busy under the LTMA...wish it were higher. my mistake at Shoreham was unforgiveable. Malta must be interesting...been there a couple of times...once filmed with the police on a speedboat policing the strict bird shooting rules. haven't done Alderney, but was looking at it the other day. that sea crossing would certainly focus my mind. going around the french coast is quite a faff as an alternative.

    • @TimKirkmt

      +The Flying Reporter I flew to Alderney - Biggin-OCK VOR-isle of white-ortac-Alderney. Great flight. Flying buddy flew back. Alderney to Cherbourg for BBQ. Then up the coast, left at Le Touqet, Lydd, Sevenoaks, Biggin. That leg was 2hrs 15mins. In a Grumman Tiger. You'll see it around - GMPFC. Do you have a share in your PA28?

    • @TheFlyingReporter
      @TheFlyingReporter  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, I've seen the aircraft...it's still there! It's a non equity share in the PA28.

    Not sure if you do this already, but always found it useful to draw the runway numbers on my 1.500 chart with a marker pen with the circuit directions in a dotted line. Saved me a couple of times.

    • @TheFlyingReporter
      @TheFlyingReporter  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks my friend, good tip. Do you do this en route when the runway in use and circuit direction has been identified? At Shoreham, there are three strips (6 runways) with variable circuits so impossible to do pre-flight I would suspect.
      On the day in question, I seem to remember that the runway in use had changed during the course of the morning, so when I arrived it was different from the one briefed on PPR. I think the gotcha here was that I was circling in the overhead for a couple of orbits, and lost my situational awareness. I now make more use of the heading bug.

    • @ALFOX58
      @ALFOX58 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Haven't been up for a few years, but where there were only a couple of options of runway, drew them on pre flight. I would normally draw extended runways in marker pen and simply write the numbers on. That made it possible to get most if not all of the runways on there with their circuit directions. But we all learn from these moments. Enjoy your videos, keep up the good work.

    So.... I did something similar the other day... I started descending from an overhead join for runway 24 LHC despite just reading read back that 06 was the active with RHC. I got to circuit height and was almost on the crosswind leg when I noticed the aircraft descending underneath - he was on final. Thankfully that was the only other aircraft in the circuit so, realising my mistake, I climbed out of the ATZ and rejoined for 06.Most embarrassing... this was at my home airfield. It was quite a misty/hazy day, probably what I'd consider to be my personal minimum for vis... that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it.We all make mistakes!

    I just recently landed next to the runway. It‘s my home airfield, only one grass runway. The only markings are red/white bars on each side, no lines, no numbers. What they did, they changed the former taxiway into the runway to plant new grass on the original runway, which was now of a darker color. So I identified this as the runway (as it always was before) and made a perfect landing. Just off the current runway... I was really emberassed.

      I've lined up on the wrong runway for final once, at Sywell picking up a veteran for project propeller, when I spotted my mistake the tower said 'you can land on that one if you want' so I did! All been there...

    Thanks for the useful video.
    I'm quite confused by that ATC instruction at 1:47, "line up and wait 02, hold short 07". Can anyone shed any light on it?

    • @martinmccabe9301
      @martinmccabe9301 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Runway 07 intersects runway 02 at the threshold. It's defensive controlling to ensure the aircraft lining up on 02 doesn't roll forward onto runway 07.

    Why is the guy in the right seat wearing a reflective vest? Seems rather ridiculous.

    • @TheFlyingReporter
      @TheFlyingReporter  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi. Good question. At Biggin Hill they make it mandatory to wear them, and if you don't, they take away your security clearance. I sometimes forget to take them off when in the aircraft, especially if I've stopped to fuel before departure. I know they look silly in the cockpit.

    • @CGoody5642

      It's ridiculous right up to the point you have to ditch your vehicle and Wade in the ocean hoping for rescue :p
      In all seriousness, I can think of a lot worse things than looking ridiculous in an airplane.
