Thanks for the helpful video! Everything in my registry was fine, EXCEPT the Word.Document.12 string mentioned in the last minute of the video. As others have mentioned, I previously had OpenOffice and LibreOffice on my PC. This is probably where the problem originated.
Was following the whole tutorial and everything was exactly the same was starting to getting desperate. Fortunately you mentioned the Default value of the .docx key and it fixed. Thank you!
This was a lifesaver!!! Thank You so much! The icons for my .docx files are back to the Word icon again after trying to install an older Microsoft Office by mistake and having Office 365. You rock!
Thank you so much for explaining so clearly how to do this. Microsoft Office 2021 was working well until a Windows 10 update. After the update, it had been uninstalled! So, reinstalled it, and it was all okay except for Word. Thanks again!
Thanks very much. One additional hint: the top-level registry entry for the file type .docx may also be the culprit: Situation and Solution: Recently OpenOffice (Version 4.1.14, March 2023) overwrote (in an updating install) the registry key setting for the top-level .docx entry (which you don't show in the video, as you never click directly on the .docx entry). On the toplevel of .dotx, there are 3 entries (the first (default), Content Type, and PreceivedType). OpenOffice changed only the first entry to OpenOffice.Docx (which breaks the context menu), it had to be corrected back to Word.Document.12 OS: Windows 10 Maybe that helps some folks.
Thank you. I lost the ability to create word files after installing open office. the option was changed to open offices own filetype. Then after uninstalling, the option was completely gone. The last thing you mentioned was the fix for me.
Thank you! The last tip in the video did it for me. Still trying to fix a problem in that my Word file icon is incorrect (same icon as a text document). If you have any fixes, please share.
Right click your Word icon and choose Properties. Then click the Change Icon button. Then browse to C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office oot\Office16 and find the WINWORD.exe file and double click it or choose Open. the Office 16 part of the path might be different for you depending on what version of Office you are running.
Thank You! This worked. In regedit i also had NullFile without any values in shell new. I had to delete it. Btw, i noticed i have 2 MS database documents in right click and they both create same file but with different methods: when i click 1 it opens db and asks to create new file and opens explorer where to create, other works fine. How to remove the bad one?
thank you. what helped was I changed the data value in the .docx (Default) key from Windows.Recipe to Word.Document.12. Sometimes all settingsfound in tge .docx\Word.Document.12\ShellNew are as described in the video and it still doesn't work, check the .docx\Default value data, it might be Windows.Recipe instead of Word.Docyment.12
Thank you so much, you helped fix a problem that has been bugging me for weeks, especially because it prevented opening Word Documents from third-party programs (such as ABBYY FineReader or OmegaT). Plus, it was to the point and very well explained. Kudos!
I don't use Office so the only thing that was missing in my right click menu was new text document.......You don't NEED to do any reg edits, all you have to do is - go to start menu, search for notepad, then right click on the notepad app, click "app settings" and then click Reset
Thank you Thank you Thank you. It was the very last thing, to ensure "Word.Document.12" in the main ".docx" key. It was pointing to "docxfile" which was all about Wordpad.
In my case I don't have the path C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Root\VFS\Windows\ShellNew The root file is missing from the Microsoft Office folder. I downloaded a registry edit file and it solved it.
I have all 3 file in shellnew folder but the word file is still not appearing like a MS word blue file icon. It is displaying as a blank piece of white paper. And that's what i can see everywhere i save a word file. What to do?
I'm still having the issue im on windows 11 with Microsoft office provincial plus 2016 and the file directory doesn't exist the issue for it not showing up has been there since i updated to windows 11.
Hmm it's strange, I don't have that ROOT folder in my Office folder, but all the files in the registry editor was fine, so I just used repair option from the Control Panel and after restarting the system the docx appeared under "New" 🤔
@@OnlineComputerTips I went to your website and used the directions there to create the root\VFS\Windows\ShellNew\word.docx path, now it works! Thank you! Nobody else on the internet has the right solution and it goes without saying that MS doesn't have a clue on how to fix.
what should i do if there null file in 2:05 is this mean the file is corrupted or sumtin, what should i do? and when i copy the link and open it, it open my word not like 3:17

Thanks a Lot .... it works for me
Thanks a lot. One week or more wasted trying so many different options and apps

It seems the common issue is the Word.Document.12 string. I followed the link to get my answer / directions faster.

Followed everything, but did not work for me under Windows 11. Any additional things to take care of?
Fix: reboot or go to task manager and "Restart" the Explorer.exe process
Thank you for this - it was driving me nuts. And like others before me have noted, it was OpenOffice that caused the problem. 😠
I'm still having the issue im on windows 11 with Microsoft office provincial plus 2016 and the file directory doesn't exist the issue for it not showing up has been there since i updated to windows 11.

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office
oot\VFS\Windows\ShellNew\
