I’ll never figure out why someone would brush a wall by hand, with a small 4” brush no less, rather than use a roller or spray gun to do the job!
It’s 2-3x faster, and has a superior finish WITHOUT amateur brush marks. Unless that’s the look you’re going for. (Though they’re needed for proper edging and touch up.)
Why on earth put yourself through all that extra effort, ergo wasted time and effort, for a sub-standard finish in the end.
I guess being Canadian we take things like that for granted not to mention we’ve been paint professionally since 1947.
Overall you’ve done a great job and look forward to your ongoing story…
    Crack On!

When you talk about blocking up fireplaces, remember the context. I grew up in an 1805 house still mostly heated by fireplaces. It got awful, and this is a warm climate. Steam heat and lower ceilings would make a massive difference in quality of life at the convent. It would have been just frigid in there all winter. Utterly miserable.
The stove was on the hearth because it replaced fire. The kitchen was laid out around the fireplace so it was the best place for the stove. As a museum docent in an 1840’s kitchen this was also a huge improvement to the nuns lives. Before the 20th century the leading cause of death for women was childbirth, the second was by fire. Skirts caught flame from fireplaces and cooking was the most dangerous. No antibiotics, or any clue about germs. Gruesome death.
Every change we think looks clumsy in fact vastly improved comfort and safety for the women who spent their lives in this building. We’re so used to modern comforts we forget how miserable life could get even for the wealthy before modernity.

Not only is the fireplace amazing, but it was so refreshing seeing that bookcase torn out without any major damage! So many people would've just taken a sledge hammer to it, when really, it's a perfectly good piece of furniture that can have a whole new life somewhere else more appropriate. I hope those are the plans for it somewhere. I love seeing demo that actually takes into consideration how much they're sending to landfills and what doesn't have to have that sad end. Not to mention having things you can sometimes sell for a few bucks that otherwise might have just been thrown away lol. Any extra bit of money, never unwanted during a renovation.

I'm amazed by how that book case was constructed so that you did not have to destroy it. Perhaps it can be used elsewhere, or sold. I think the fire place is interesting, but not particularly beautiful. In the kitchen, people made use of the space according to their needs, just as you are doing. Love the quality of the videos, music, plant life, action!

I actually can’t believe how much you’ve gotten done Billy! You definitely need to get little green paint to sponsor you. You’re getting enough of their paint they should! The fireplace looks fantastic! Why anybody would cover it up with a bookcase I have no idea. Although those nuns did all kinds of interesting things to the rooms. Really can’t wait until the kitchen is done. That’ll be really fantastic. Wanted to know on a sidenote… How Michael is doing. Did he ever finish the cottage? I wish him well and hope he is flourishing. Sending love as always from California💜🤟🏻😎🇺🇸

If that room with the bookcase hiding the fireplace was used as a classroom, could that burn mark on the floor be heat damage from some kind of stove to keep the classroom warm in the winter? Could have even been a barrel, maybe there was no easy way to heat the class and a teacher got frustrated and didn't care about potential damage.

Billy, when are we going to see a 'Project' board showing what the divisions of areas and what with-in those divisions are the work that needs to be accomplished and the expected time frames to be expected for each? As we watch the videos, it appears as if there is a lot of jumping from project to project, seldom seeing the work entailed to complete it before going on to the next planned endeavor. If a Contractor were given this item to remove and renovate the room, it would most assuredly be 'Work for today'. Outside of that, we are enthralled with the entire project. There is so much entertainment in watching this grow, much as was the Chateau.

Good morning Billy, my goodness there is not a lazy bone or hair in your body!! I find it amazing how you just work through all the challenges consistently. Nothing fazes you. It seems to me, you are given an idea how to approach the projects and you work your way through it, and the most amazing part is - you hardly get dirty, regardless all the dust and sweat!! I am sure Gwendolyn is very proud of you as well as your family. I agree, the amazing finds of the fire places is mind blowing, why did they cover it up, no wonder those Convents were so cold. The room would be amazing once the partition is removed, it would transform into something totally lovely. Also the kitchen, in years past, we can see many a chateaux having those huge fire places to cook and it warmed the room, it was an amazing life "if you were rich|" like a Noble Man!! I am sure you are very happy for buying the old Convent and discovering so much past history. Crack on as you say, kind regards.

I really like the old fireplaces with an Aga range installed inside when the fireplace can't be restored to working order - nice in a kitchen. I was reading that estates were taxed on how many chimney's they had, you could have even more hidden fireplaces 🙃🤔🥸

Love your regard to historical features and great work ethic Billy. The convent is looking wonderful from the outside already. I could cry looking at all the dry grass etc around the Chateau where once the green grass grew so fast it gave you lots of lawn mowing to do. I imagine it is very sad for all of you living there too. 🥰

The place is coming along, little by little! Before long, it won’t be recognizable from how you bought it! That big room with the fireplace, you just opened up, must have been some sort of grand reception room of some kind! Have you spoken to the Catholic dioceses about the history of the convent, and maybe the original floor plans or architectural plans, for the place? All the best!

Billy, in the midst of of my packing to move to another state I saw your message crack on and it made me cry since I have moments of discouragement! When you put crack on the paint on the wall I felt like in that moment it was a message for met for all of us to keep plowing on during these difficult times in the world! Billy you're a shining light of determination and sheer will of power of getting things done on the convent.

So love the fact that you took such great care removing the bookcase despite it being a modern addition; certainly good enough for reuse elsewhere or perhaps for sale. Many people would've just ripped it out willy nilly without a second thought.
