A bit of trivia- Back in the day Cracker Jack placed a little trinket in each of their boxes. When the line in the song "there ain't no Coupe de Ville hiden' at the bottom of a Cracker Jack box", the makers of Cracker Jack placed a Cadillac Coupe de Ville trinket in the bottom of each box as a nod to the song!
The guy playing the piano is Jim Steinman, the genius who wrote this and other songs for Meatloaf, all the songs from the Bat Out Of Hell album are superb, you need to check out "For Crying Out Loud" probably the greatest love song ever written.
I saw an interview with Meatloaf where he said that he never considered himself a singer. He considered himself an actor who sang. For every song, he created a character whose life can be summed up in that song. That's where all the emotion comes from.
"For Crying Out Loud", most epic, passionate love song Meat ever performed. A Must listen. Steinman was a Genius and Meat was one of a kind. R.I.P. to Both.
Yup. The first part of the song is him telling a girl that 2 out of 3 ain’t bad. The end of the song is him telling her that the only girl he “ever loved a long time ago” said the same thing to him. Jim Stienmann, the lyricist, is a genius! My favorite lyrics in this song are: “But you've been cold to me so long I'm crying icicles instead of tears” and “But there ain't no Coupe de Ville hidin' at the bottom of a Cracker Jack box”. First time I told a woman I loved her was my high school girlfriend in 1978, I was 17 she was 19. We were in the backseat of my ‘69 Chevy Impala parked at the beach making out. This song came on and when it ended she said, “I guess that’s the way it is with us huh”? I said, “what”? She said “you know, two out of three ain’t bad, you’re never going to love me are you”? I said, “no, that’s not true, of course I love you”. However, that was a lie, I just did not want to hurt her feelings 🤷🏼♂️
This song is my life . My ex wife hurt me so bad in 2005 that I can never ever love any woman ever again even though I want them , I need them there ain't no way I could ever love them , they should not be sad because 2 out of 3 ain't bad
@@michelekoop244 I’ve heard that theory before but I don’t think that’s the case. Why say, there is only one girl that I will ever love, if it’s the same girl?
Jim Steinman …the master lyricist of all time. Nobody ever wrote lyrics like Jim and nobody ever will. Meat Loaf was the perfect artist for Jim’s songwriting. A match made in heaven and so sad that they are both now gone. The whole bat out of hell album was an absolute masterpiece! For Crying Out Loud is my favourite track on the album…total perfection!
You can catch a glimpse of Jim Steinman on piano here. He wrote and envisioned all the songs, later produced them as well. He did the same thing for other artists too, like "Total Eclipse of the Heart" which, I might say, is his finest achievment. Don't miss out on that one. Sung by Bonnie Tyler.
It's funny you would mention that one. The first time I heard "Total Eclipse...", I said that it sounded like a Meatloaf song. It was some time later when I learned that Steinman was responsible for both.
To me, his best song is "For crying out loud". It's a pure masterclass from beginning to end! Vocally, musically, and lyrically. Hopefully, you'll consider it in the future. 🤞😊
I am so happy you guys are loving Meat Loaf. Please keep going down the rabbit hole. Even songs without Jim Steinman writing, his songs are fire. He sang a song later in his career called "Why Isnt that Enough?" It is almost the answer, or the other side of the story to this song. Check it out when you get the chance. But please, you MUST, check out "For Crying Out Loud" from this album. There is no video for this song. Love you guys!
I was at one of Meat Loaf's shows when he described the creation of this song. He and Jim Steinman (who wrote all of the Meat Loaf songs you've covered so far) were in a hotel room with a couple of actors (will it surprise you they both started in musical theater?). Elvis's song "I Want You, I Need You, I Love You" came on the radio and their friend said, "Jimmy, you'll never write a song like this." Meat said that Jim paused for just a moment, and said, "You're right. I'll never write that. But I can write this: 'I want you, I need you, but there ain't no way I'm ever gonna love you. Don't be sad, 'cause two outta three ain't bad.'"
He was in Fight Club. In this song, he doesn't get a taste of his own medicine. The character is told he is wanted and needed but will never be loved. Then, he is honest with the current woman that he wants her and needs her but will never love her, as there will only be one woman he will ever love.
The thing that always gets me about this song is the third verse. He's basically telling us he learned this from someone else, who he really hasn't let go of, and he CANT love now. If that isn't the most human thing in a song then I dont know what is. We create our own problems, sometimes.
Jim Steinman (piano) wrote all of the songs on this album. Unfortunately, we lost both of them within a few of months of each other.😭😭😇😇 I still have this album on vinyl. "Yes, I know you're lookin' for a ruby in a mountain of rocks, but there ain't no Coupe deVille hiding at the bottom of a crackerjack box".
Lord, this song came out when I was in high school, I'm 63😂😂❤RIP Meatloaf🙏( also appreciate yall know you must watch videos of him; he's a theatrical performer)
I think it was on the Mike Huckabee Show when Meatloaf told an interesting story about the day JFK was killed, he was a teenager in Dallas at the time.
According to a Meatloaf Interview, he is singing to and about the same girl. She left him Years earlier wanting more than him. She came back years later after being cold to him for so long. He could not Love her like he did before, Only the Girl who didn't break his Heart ❤️
There's a classic scene with him in the film "Rocky Horror Picture Show". He has a short cameo as "Eddie". Towards the end, everyone is seated at an oversized dinner table and the "food" is covered with a cloth. Someone asks what we're having. Doctor Frankfurter pulls the cloth away and says "Meatloaf" (its a dismembered Eddie).
I never get tired of hearing Meatloaf sing... He originally came from the theater which was his 1st love and you can tell that by his songs... Every time you get a song from Meat loaf you get a show with it... When he decided to get into rock and roll he left a job with the theater that was going to give him $60,000 a year... He left a lucrative career with steady pay to pursue his dream... The rest is history...Great reaction, guys...I loved it...See you on the next one...Keep Being Awesome !!!...
Jim Steinman, in my humble opinion, was basically a writer of American pop opera. Absolutely a genius. This ballad is one that I never get tired of hearing. “I’m crying icicles instead of tears” - freaking brilliant.
My favourite lines in a song ever with "you'll never find your gold on a sandy beach, you'll never drill for oil on a city street and now you're looking for a Ruby in a mountain of rocks. But there ain't no coup de ville hiding at the bottom of a cracker jack box." What an amazing song this is. Everything is perfection, the words, the passion, the story and the performance. He was a true great and thankfully his music will never die. He is definitely singing about the same girl. She left him, killed his love for her and then expected him to love her when she came back.
With the genius of Jim Steinman and Meat Loaf's musical and theatrical background, they were one of the most perfect collaborations in history. One reason Bat Out of Hell is such a great selling album is because people needing to replace the ones that they wore out, lost, or borrowed and never got back (stolen) since they can't do without it being in their collections. And not to mention the evolution of vinyl, to tapes, to CDs, and now back to vinyl. I believe everyone can relate to this song in some way.
Jim Steinman was a genius songwriter. Ironically, when he and Meat Loaf were making the rounds pitching the album, legendary music executive Clive Davis told Steinman he needed to go back and learn how to write a song. Needless to say, Clive missed the boat on that one... :D
I was fortunate enough to meet Meat Loaf at a convention in Sept 2021 a few months before he passed. He did a panel discussion where he explained: "I'm not a singer. I can't sing. I'm an actor and some of the characters I play can sing."
Agree with this album being a staple. Start to finish, every song. To be truthful... I like Bat Out Of Hell 2 start to finish as well. Bat Out Of Hell 3 had some really good moments as well. But i guess hearing this album first when I was a kid makes it a bit more special to me. Awesome reaction as usual guys. Selections the last few days have been AWESOME!!! GO BOSTON BRUINS!!! 🍻👏🤟
You MUST listen to For Crying Out Loud if you appreciate his performance on this song you will be floored by his vocals and lyrics. He only performed it a few times in concert. He couldn’t do it while singing an entire concert. It is imo one of the most intense and stunning love songs to ever be written. It is Jim Steinman’s masterpiece.
I honestly think that his best vocal performances are from for crying out loud and bat out of hell. My favorite song from him though is objects in the rearview mirror may appear closer than they are. It's a real tearjerker but if you watch it you have to do the official video
I have always loved this song. It played on the jukebox at the pool where I took my kids the summer of 1981. The record in the machine had this song on one side and “When Rock and Roll Dreams Come True” on the other side. Both are great songs. Being 78 now, this brings back fond memories.
Anyone remember the cassette tape commercials..."Is it live or is it Memorex?" Meatloaf is one of those making it hard to tell the difference, Plus back in the day there was no autotune or lip sync. Bands had to play/perform. Syeve Perry and Journey were top notch.
This is my favorite Meatloaf song. He was such a musical genius, with a great voice. I was never a big fan of his, as a person. But, I can put that aside and recognize the talent he had.
The fact that basically EVERY record label DID NOT want to sign Meatloaf, and yet every album he released was a MULTI-MILLION selling album (With Bat Out of Hell considered one of the best overall albums ever made) just goes to prove how talented he was, and how in touch with what the listening audience WANTED to hear.
I feel as if a part of my youth died when the passing of this wonderful entertainer and genuine human being occurred. Marvin Lee Aday (Michael) AKA Meatloaf your musical performances will live on! Thanks for the decades of memories. Great song selection "Bars & Barbells"
Paradise by the dashboard light is meant to be fun and it is. But this one, he can make you see the story like it's his own. He sings it like those are his true feelings. It and For crying out loud are my favorites.
Meat and Steinmann create more than music. They are today’s masterpieces worthy of comparison to yesterday’s composers like Mozart and Bach So theatrically could be on Broadway
The "flip" at the end basically is that he still loves his first love, who walked out on him, and therefore can't fully commit to this new relationship. I unfortunately can relate to this story.
This song speaks so much to relationship cycles, somebody hurt him in the past, and he can’t get over it; and he ends up hurting someone else the exact same way with another person.
Meatloaf / Jim Steinman musical genius wrote many of this Rock Opera genre even Jim's "Rock n Roll dreams come true", "Outta the frying pan and into the Fire" the whole album has the meatloaf sounds.
you guys totally nailed it, with your reaction. I believe there _was_ a comical element to the lyrics, despite the tragedy of the story. some have even theorized she is the same girl who said this to him, and her feelings changed ... but so had his (you've been cold to me, so long). I love this twist
Bat Out of Hell is his greatest vocal performance IMO especially for that last amazing note that he holds but his emotion is on full display with Two Out of Three Aint Bad. One song off his epic debut album that is almost never played and is great too is the high energy All Revved Up With No Pace To Go, complete with great saxophone.
Jim Steinman & Meatloaf, Jim Steinman & Bonnie Tyler, what powerful Albums they created. Jim's' lyrics and music and with Meat and Bonnie with such strong, distinctive and emotional voices. I am torn as I sort of agree with @johnpearson2316 about "for crying out loud" but also love "you took the words right out of my mouth" including the preamble "on a hot summers night"
You really should check out the live video for the song "I'd Lie for You (and that's the truth)." This is the one he sings with Patti Russo (she's wearing a red dress). It's not only a great song, but it also lets you see an amazing performance from these two, and the rest of the band. Meatloaf was great live.
Most people don’t know this but on Ted Nugents album titled Free For All, Meatloaf handled the lead vocals on the songs Writing On The Wall, Together, and Hammerdown. Check them out, the dude had a voice.
Great song, saw Meatloaf live in UK, his last concert. He was brilliant from start to finish. For me it has to be Objects by the rearview mirror my favourite. Vocally, emotionally brilliant.
Jim Steinman also wrote "Making Love Out Of Nothing At All" for Air Supply & "Total Eclipse Of The Heart" for Bonnie Tyler. During the 4 weeks Bonnie was #1, Air Supply was #2 for 3 of those weeks on the US Billboard Hot 100 singles chart back in 1983.
You guys should react to his “For Crying Out Loud” - it’s the greatest love song ever written or ever likely to be written. A masterpiece by him and Steinman.
Perhaps one of the greatest voices in rock. It still seems weird to think he is gone from us. The heavenly choir had to step up a notch when he walked in.
8:46 You should look into Jim Steinman, who wrote all the music on Meatloaf's albums, and is the person playing piano in the video. They had a falling out and Jim released a solo album, Bad for Good, that he and meatloaf recorded years later as Meatloaf's Back to Hell album.
Sam hit it on the head. He said there was only one girl that he ever loved and she broke his heart by saying two out of three ain’t bad and he can’t love anyone else because of that
This might sound weird but this song is actually my mom and dad song because on their first date this song kept playing on the radio over and over again and they played it at their wedding (R.I.P Mom)
The guy playing the piano in the video is Jim Steinman. The man who wrote and composed a lot of Meat Loaf along with other hits performed by other artists.
I thought that was a contest to give away a couple de Ville each box had a trinket but only one had the car key was a kid at the time so not sure
@@psycojuggalo1642 That would be so awesome if a crackerjack box had keys to a couple de Ville inside.
Never knew that. One if myy favorite tunes too.

Coincidence. They passed away in less than a year of each other.

Agree about “For Crying Out Loud “. A masterpiece. So few cover it. They will get all the meatloaf fans flocking to watch.

"For Crying Out Loud"....what a perfect song!
It doesn't matter how many decades can go past , this song still shines as bright as the day it was released. True classic.
I saw an interview with Meatloaf where he said that he never considered himself a singer. He considered himself an actor who sang. For every song, he created a character whose life can be summed up in that song. That's where all the emotion comes from.
He was a trained opera singer.
I can see and feel this. We lost a fantastic artist!

R.I.P. to Both.
Thanks for the reaction!!! You two will LOVE "For Crying Out Loud"!!!
For Crying Out Loud definitely showcases his range but there's a reason why the Bat Out of Hell album sold so many copies. Epic all the way.
The guy gave a 1000% in every performance ...Blessed to have met him and see him live 4 times
His song “Heaven can wait “ is not as popular as some of his other songs but it is my favorite. ❤
The writer is playing the piano, Jim Steinman. He is a lyrical genius!!

I saw him for his Bat Out of Hell II: Back into Hell Tour - and he was just magic! The stage presence he had was incredible. ♫
Mom and I would listen to this on vinyl when I was growing up... Love this song, and this album. Miss my mom, but thankful for the musical memories!❤❤
Too much fun when this came out at 9 years young.
Happy to see you enjoying it, and happy trails from Arnprior ON!
Remember when this song came out very well! Great reaction y'all!
Have y’all ever seen the movie “Rocky Horror Picture Show” from 1975? Meatloaf was the character, Eddie, in it.
Still listening this awesome song in 2024 end
8:46 You should look into Jim Steinman, who wrote all the music on Meatloaf's albums, and is the person playing piano in the video.
They had a falling out and Jim released a solo album, Bad for Good, that he and meatloaf recorded years later as Meatloaf's Back to Hell album.
Sam hit it on the head. He said there was only one girl that he ever loved and she broke his heart by saying two out of three ain’t bad and he can’t love anyone else because of that
Please do “You took the words right out of my mouth”. I think you will love it
RIP Meat, we sure miss you. Please do .....for crying out loud..... One of his best.
This might sound weird but this song is actually my mom and dad song because on their first date this song kept playing on the radio over and over again and they played it at their wedding (R.I.P Mom)
My absolute favourite song of his.
You need to hear "For Crying Out Loud" if you want a vocal performance. I believe it is his best song.
The guy playing the piano in the video is Jim Steinman. The man who wrote and composed a lot of Meat Loaf along with other hits performed by other artists.
I always liked " you took the words right out of my mouth". That would be a good song to check out.
