  • Chemical peels can dramatically improve hyperpigmentation from melasma to PIH including post acne dark marks, acne, texture irregularities, stretch marks, keratosis pilaris, fine lines, wrinkles and the appearance of scars. But you have to be extremely careful about the type of chemical peel and who is performing your peel as melanted skin is different and has different needs.
Learn all about chemical peels and which may be best for you during the chemical peel series with board-certified dermatologist Dr. Alexis Stephens.

Recommendation of ingredients & peels for different skin conditions:
8:19 For acne you need either/all of these ingredients - Salicylic Acid, Retinoic Acid, Modified Jessner, Benzoyl Peroxide
VI peel and Perfect Derma peel are recommended
09:11 Melasma - Multiple tyrosinase inhibitors, Retinol
Cosmelan peel, Enlighten peel and Demamelanin peel are recommended
10:16 For PIH & fine lines - Salicylic Acid, Glycolic Acid, Kojic Acid, Apha Arbutin, Retinoic Acid, Modified Jessner, etc.
Same peels as the Melasma are recommended but changes in the percentage, strength of ingredients and the technique will change the depth into the skin

Really well described. I had a few glycolic peels and had no idea of the after care or what to expect. I am finding that derms in the last few years are a lot more interested in a "partnership" versus a "dictatorship" and it is gaining the patients more consistent results.

I didn't know that there were so many different kinds of chemical peels. You gave such a thorough, detailed break down of the different ingredients in the various chemical peels. Your knowledge, insight and understanding about this is very much appreciated. I would like to also know your thoughts on Morpheous 8 and Scarlet? Such as if there's research or findings that states that one is more effective than the other? Are they both safe for people of color? And I've recently found out about Micro-coring. But I'm not sure if that would leave scarring on a more melanated skin tone? I'm also glad that you mentioned that chemical peels can help improve KP. Especially since that (and fine hairs on my jaw) is one of the issues I've been dealing with. I went to a Dr's appointment last year and my primary care physician had a new nurse. Somehow we started talking about my wanting to get laser hair removal. She said the previous job that she left was at a medical spa and that I should never get laser hair removal. She said that there was no laser that could be used on someone with my skin tone. That the laser would burn the skin and cause a scar. This was just last year. I think there's a lot of misinformation out there concerning the options that people of color have available to them where chemical peels, lasers, etc are concerned. Which is why I'm thankful for the good and useful information that you provide. (My apologies for the long comment)

Hey doctor! Is it OK to use a cleanser containing niacinamide before applying salicylic acid? Same question when it comes to using a moisturizer containing niacinamide after applying salicylic acid? I’ve heard that niacinamide raises the skins pH which makes the salicylic acid unable to effectively penetrate the skin
