  • === Apologies for the re-upload, had to redact some copyrighted TV that was showing in the previous version! ===
    In this video we take a look at the Mutant HD51 4K satellite receiver which runs an OS based on Linux. There is a large number of different Linux "images" available for boxes like this such as "OpenVix," "OpenATV," "OpenPli" and "HDMU." I ended up going with OpenVix which is what I'm demonstrating in this video although most of these images can achieve the same functionality if you were to install the appropriate plugins.

    Apologies for the re-upload. The previous video showed some live TV which caused copyright issues. I have therefore re-uploaded this version with all live TV blurred out. Unfortunately this means that it isn't really possible for you to view the quality of the TV stream but from my experience it looks just as good as any other satellite TV receiver would when viewing Live TV, recordings or timeshifted TV.

      TH-cam can recognise live tv embedded in a video days after its been recorded?

    • @camerongray1515
      @camerongray1515  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The identified content was from the 4k demo channel I was demonstrating which broadcasts sample clips which are licenced from the copyright holder. Many of the same clips are also present on TH-cam so it was probably picked up as a match against an existing TH-cam video. I can't imagine more traditional TV such as a news broadcast being detected in the same way. I just ended up redacting absolutely everything just to play on the safe side.
      It's annoying but oh well, now I know for the future!

    Those cables are made in a process called overmouldung . The wires are inserted into a injection moulded carrier and then go through a second moulding step to add the outer cladding. The issue with the cheap sata adaptors is the alignment of the power pins.. typically the Shenzhen manufacturers use well used mould tools which causes poor positioning of the internal components

    I wish we had stuff like this in the US. I would love more control over media in the household. Alas, when you get and satellite or cable variant you are locked into their equipment for the most part. You can get CableCard tuners but they are pretty locked down. OTA is viable but limited where I live.
    Love the content, Cameron. My wife loves to listen to you speak. She has a thing for the Scottish burr.
    Peace and respect to you and yours!

      Thanks! May be worth taking a look at what satellites you can receive in the US and see if you can find a list of FTA channels available on them. Thankfully in the UK, FTA TV is pretty common and you'd only really need to pay for a subscription service to get some specific entertainment channels or for things like sports/movies.

    • @mercster
      @mercster 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I was just about to ask in comments, can you get these satellite signals in the US? I used a cablecard once in a TIVO and it was like pulling teeth with the cable company. I guess I don't understand what kind of signals this video is talking about, can you point me to something? Thanks.

    • @camerongray1515
      @camerongray1515  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It will come down entirely to what satellites are available form your location and whether they broadcast any FTA channels. The satellites I'm using here (Astra 2 28.2E) are only available within Europe. Unfortunately I don't know anything about the US market but you can probably find lists of satellites and available channels online.

      OK. Now that I'm farther in the video, I heard you say that they also have cable tuners. I wonder if something common like Comcast in the states would support something like this. Probably not. I've switched mostly to online streams anyway (DirecTV NOW is awesome!)

    im working with marine electronics , and i have recently recieved an antenna dish with 2 motors for satellite tracking control. I wanted a linux based reciever because im already useing linux and i thought the configuration of parameters and beeing able to use the programs i already have would make alot of sence.
    But i find it hard to find a configureable linux reciever witch is able to control antenna engines , but i am kind of a newbie when it comes to this subject.
    My question is , when you say "satellite tuners" , do you refer to a dish witch is controlled my engines ? or the LNB itself?
    And if not , is there a reciever you would advice me to look more in to?
    The whole purpose of this is learning. Thank you

    You said about molded sata cable connections, are you meaning both data and power cables molded together? My Seasonic psu has sata power cables molded from power supply. It's when you use adapters from molex to Sata you have to wath out for.

    • @camerongray1515
      @camerongray1515  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The molex to SATA (or other adapters) with the moulded connectors definitely seem to be the worse offenders as they are made so cheaply (seemingly with limited quality control) but personally I try to avoid them whenever possible just to be safe. Hopefully the ones on a name brand PSU are made to a decent enough standard. Also came across them in a few Supermicro servers at work but hoping those will be okay.

    • @camerongray1515
      @camerongray1515  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I definitely wouldn't recommend using a Sky viewing card with one of these, it will almost certainly go against Sky's terms of service. You also risk issues such as the card becoming deactivated as Sky automatically updates data on viewing cards and keeps them active using satellite transmissions. Sounds like for your situation you would be much better off with something like Sky Q.

    Thanks for the video Cameron. I've got one of these boxes connected with a standard aerial, no satelite, and I'm using Freeview. Its a setup to replace a very old Sony HDD/DVD recorder + Sony freeview receiver. The channel selection and ordering, even with bouquets, is different than that of my fathers TV freeview settings. I'm just wondering if anyone else has a similar problem and how this can be corrected. Is there another App? How does a TV work out its freeview list of channels? The difference I find annoying. I agree the unit is very responsive, I do wonder how long the remote control will last as is feels cheap.
    Update: Unable to upgrade the software. Anyone got this working? Which USB stick did you use?

    • @camerongray1515
      @camerongray1515  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can order it with DVB-T tuners for Freeview although I have no idea how well it would work for that. That said, there's no 4K Freeview channels so you're not really getting any benefit over a non-4K box. There's also a chance that if 4K Freeview channels were launched in the future, this box may not support them. It's worked fine whenever I've used the OpenWebIf based streaming however I haven't yet done anything with Plex (although I need to look into this to reduce the bandwidth usage of the streaming)

  • @jasonl5967

    I noticed that on the receiver it had 2 LNB inputs, so does that mean it would be able to tune to say Astra 19 East and HotBird 13 East? I wouldn’t mind getting my hands on one of these boxes if it can, also it would be fab to get the free 4K/UHD content from both positions, I don’t expect the box would be able to show the 4K content down scaled on to a non 4K TV, I have a Icecrypt S3750CHD receiver which allows me to get both and put the channels where I want them but minus the 4K channels as the box can’t show the pictures

    • @camerongray1515
      @camerongray1515  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I haven't tried it myself but I'm pretty sure you can set up different satellites on each tuner. However bear in mind that because you only have one satellite on each tuner, you may have issues recording one channel while watching another or while watching one channel on the box while streaming another channel on another device, it may work but both channels would need to share the same frequency band and polarisation). I can also confirm that mine is happy to downscale 4K content to 1080p.

    • @camerongray1515

      I could have done that although for me the primary focus was to have a box directly connected to my TV (instead of relying on network streaming) with the streaming side of things as an added bonus. Having a dedicated box just seemed like a much simpler solution than having to build a TVHeadend server and maintain the whole software stack around it.

    • @camerongray1515

      Yeah, that's one of the reasons I went for something like this, the channel selection is so much better than with Freesat. It has a lot of channels that Freeview lacks and there's only a few Freeview channels that aren't available FTA on satellite.

    Hi Cameron, interesting to see your video on this. I was interested in a receiver that would be able to stream to other devices and I don't want to have multiple coaxial feeds and receivers. I know Sky Q can do this but I don't want to use them for lots of reasons. Freesat boxes are totally locked down and it doesn't seem likely they will allow this anytime soon. You may or may not be aware about the recent problems with the Freesat EPG (cost for broadcasters to be included in it per channel) - essentially 4 HD is not available on the Freesat platform just now while Freesat and C4 have this spat so it is interesting to see that it looks like you can get it on this device. The series link options don't look nearly as good as with TiVO, Sky, or Freesat so it will be interesting to see how your machine works out in a few weeks or months.

    To be fair that adapter doesn't seem to me very safe, if the screw is not properly fastened you can end up easily with live pins exposed, also someone like a child could plug that adapter in and touch the live pins if you leave it laying around open.
    I don't also get why do they include an adapter, that is a standard cable so they could have simply replaced the cable with the correct one, probably would have also costed less money than including the adapter.

    • @camerongray1515
      @camerongray1515  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't get why they would include it rather than supply a new cable but I can hardly see it being any more dangerous than a regular rewireable UK plug which would also expose the user to live parts if it wasn't screwed together properly.

    • @camerongray1515

      It's really just the channel selection so you'd be best to just look up a list of channels on each platform and decide if the difference is worth it for you. Realistically, it's relatively minor, just a few "nice to haves" like BBC News in HD. For me it was worth it because I already had the satellite cabling installed to the correct place, but I'm not sure I'd necessarily install the equipment for it from scratch.

      It upsets me that there are spiteful people like you who flag review videos! He is clearly not intentionally trying to breach copyright and is just trying to show the features of the device. BTW graphics in games can be copyrighted too, how about I flag all YOUR videos for copyright violation!?!?

      This literally is an FTA satellite receiver connected to a satellite dish on the roof pointing to a satellite in orbit, it is not connected to an antenna...
