  • So here starts our maiden voyage, we stumbled across an old WW2 ship on eBay, and without thinking we bought her! So this is the start of something crazy, she has so much history and so many stories to tell, So along the way as well as trying to bring her back to life we will also be looking back at her history.
    We are very hands on people, in our day job we build camper vans, so we are hoping to use our skills, and obviously we have so much more to learn along the way!
    Please be kind, we take all of your comments to heart so if you haven’t got anything positive to say then don’t say anything at all!!! But any help and advice you can give along the way would be great!

    Some people do not understand that others are not millionaires. You are doing well given your limitations in time and finance. The next time you get someone telling you what you 'must' do ask them for the cash and watch them run away.

    You folks are gaining ground on this massive project ! You should NOT be concerned about the impatient comments for a second. Your family is all contributing their labor and learning life skills while building memories! There is nothing more important than the family striving to achieve success in the little projects and sharing the love. I look forward to each episode where you share real life issues in this ship's restoration. Keep up the good work and continue to make us proud...

    Getting rid of the rubbish gets a big thumbs up. That would drive me mad. Have to agree being organised saves time and effort. Always put everything back where you find it. Not many people would be brave enough to take on this project. Well done for what you’ve achieved so far. 👍

    I know norhing about sea going boats, but I am familiar with inland waterways where the worst thing you can do with a wooden boat is take it out of the water. The wood shrinks and it leaks like a sieve when returned to the water. Any wooden boats laid up for a period of time would be sunk amd then lifted when required.
    I am amazed at what you have already achieved in a very short period of time. You are creating great memories for your children and a valuable learning experience.

    Your number one priority is safety you are right. It is coming along and when you finally get everything organized and get the rubbish off the boat things will be moving along. Keep up the great work and the kids getting involved will bring on a lot of know-how and impress their friends at look what we can do. Building knowledge, pride, dreams, and reality for the youngsters is great. It is going to be an amazingly beautiful vessel.

    Couldn`t agree more with your comments to people that always "know better" than you. We operate the P-520 here in the States and have been planning our haul out for over a year. People think a haul out is so easy. First, it`s difficult to find a yard willing to haul a WW2 boat out at all, and then the costs, ours was originally $25k US, now we`ve found a better deal, but it is still $600 a month for being on the hard, and then as you said, a wooden boat can`t be out safely that long, so we are on a clock once we begin. So many things go into these things and people don`t seem to understand the realities of owning one. All my crew work full time jobs and we can only schedule trips as we are able. Keep up the great work!

    I watch a few restoration/self build projects and it seems that when aa new project is started there will always be a few people who believe it's their job to put you all down and to justify why you do what you do. They always get bored when you don't do exactly what they say and will move on, they always do.
    Your video's really do get better each week and you are absolutely right, you don't take a wooden boat out of the water for anything other than the minimum time because they don't like it.

So far you doing a great job and your giving us a true glance of the hard work involved in such a project. Kudos to you both, keep up the good. Work btw I completely understand you not taking the boat to a dry dock when you can use the money towards the boat restoration itself. A lot of folks just don't have common sense and they think everyone is just made of money. Good to see mason on board helping out working hard. Good for him, awesome stuff.

    Unfortunately Common Sense is not a very common commodity these days and lots of people don’t appreciate patience when it comes to Projects...The mind set of the majority is everything has to be done Now.
    You take your time and do it your way,if it takes a year or longer then so be it,she deserves to be re-fitted properly with patience with love and with understanding.
    I’m afraid Gemma there will be people who keep banging on about Dry Dock and re-decking and they’ll do your head in but just ignore them as the biggest project some of them have ever probably done is a jigsaw Lol 😂.
    You are all doing great and keep up with the hard work when you can.
    It’s lovely hearing your voice as you remind me of a GF I had from Liverpool years ago who sadly I lost but you remind me a lot of her personality and general outlook on life. I know for one I will follow you and your families story every episode.

  • @iamlukie1826
    @iamlukie1826 3 ปีที่แล้ว +21

    Common sense isn’t very common. A lot of people watching TH-cam are spoiled watching other channels that can just drop everything and spend exorbitant amounts of money to expedite the process. It is in most cases unrealistic to expect the average family to afford to make that comment in time, resources, or money. Just keep doing what your doing and when you see the comments to put the boat in the dry or do this or that just move to the next comment. I personally like your approach and am along for the journey not the destination.

    Patience is a virtue that some seem to lack these days. It'll take as long as it takes, all dictated by time and money. It looks heck of a lot better just for the tidying up and clearing of rubbish 👍 Well done & ignore the nagging know better types.

  • @robfaith6029
    @robfaith6029 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Just a suggestion. What about you put a length of wood on the roof with a tarpaulin attached and then have a frame on the bow (front) which would give you cover to stop the rain from entering the boat and also give you a dry area to continue to work. I hope this might help, good luck with your build.

  • @YeeHaa

    Hello again guys! Another thought. I wonder if you’ve considered splitting your videos into two shorter ones during the week instead of one longer one? If you did we’d all still watch both episodes, and it would double your video views to push you higher up the TH-cam algorithm to get you more viewer recommendations.
    And I know it’s been said often by others too, but just to reiterate, your parenting skills with your kids are a-maz-ing! You should be sooooo proud.

    Great posts and an inspiring effort. I do this for a living on much larger yachts and there is no right way, there is your way. I commend you for taking on a wooden boat, i have always stayed away from them but seeing what you find tends to make me think I should look closer rather than judge a book by its cover. A little suggestion, it can be taken or left, you are now in a community where people help people, if you’re on a dock and need something, someone will lend it to you, give it to you or help you fix your broken part. Don’t be shy to mention that you ‘need’ or ‘could do with’ as personally I’d be happy to send you some of the parts I have amassed to put them to good use on your great project, it’s not a charity it’s friendship and community support. Good effort guys and keep up the good work, you inspired me to make a comment which is the first time ever.........

    The forward main deck looks amazing after a little scrubbing. The darker stains will likely lift with a treatment of oxalic acid (wood bleach), but sadly it will raise the grain after drying. A good pumicing stone will level and lighten further what the wood bleach didn't get. I wish I knew a quicker way to fix the mid-section forward of the stern, but its in-depth process starting with the supporting timbers directly beneath the missing deck portions, and everywhere forward and aft from the breach. The rot has to go, as this is a heavily stressed section with the marine diesel's beneath the ribs & stringers that support the main deck & cabin areas adjacent to it. The kids berths turned out so well, after the barest of efforts, which undoubtedly was a blessing. Stay safe & be very well.

    Your doing a bang up job. You have a great plan of attack on this project. I like the idea of using the Teak on the Aft Poop deck. Maybe you could make a fiberglass construct to go over whatever underlayment you put on the bow. Whatever you decide I know it will be great. Sorry I forgot to say that I love the way you are teaching your kids on the working your doing for the boat. That's the same thing we did with ours. Their attitude is so positive to learn, use it before they loose it. Your great parents, and I don't say that lightly. ++++++++++++++

    One secret to a successful youtube channel is either a cute dog or really cute, cheerful, helpful, and well mannered kids. So there’s two big plus factors right there that are going to insure your success. You are very patient teachers and fine examples to those two charmers. I admit I was cynical about your project at the start but you have won me over and I wait for your videos. Wishing you the best.

    Just to expand on what you said Gemma; Having a wooden boat on the hard for a long time dries out the planking and it will shrink a LOT, this can damage the hull even more not to mention that it then becomes a huge deal it get it back in the water, while it leaks like a sieve due to the shrinking of the planks until the planks swell again. Also to give an idea on how much the planks can shrink, I saw one wood boat that spent too much time out of the water and the planks had shrank so much you could drop coins between them.

    Love two things in this video. First, that you have a small boat and you can start removing trash from the boat. Second, that all of this is happening on a beautiful sunny day.

    Your logic is impeccable. Any work that can be done on the hook should be done on the hook. Yard and dock fees are just a bug suck on resources that could otherwise be used on restoration.

    Great job , lot's of work done ! One comment , under all the merch it say's "Spring" So I was thinking not available til spring , Not so , it has already shipped , May confuse other's too , lose sales. Maybe add in stock , ships right away ,. Keep up the great job , I like your plans for the bow ! Maybe every month have a mug signed by the whole family raffle it off , sell tickets. 'm hooked , time fly's while watching. OVER......
