In the early days of Islam, Prophet Muhammad (SAW) faced significant opposition and persecution from the pagan Arabs, particularly from his own tribe, the Quraysh, in Mecca. Among his most notable tormentors were Abu Jahl, Abu Lahab, and his wife, Umm Jamil. Here's a detailed account of their mistreatment:
Abu Jahl, whose real name was Amr ibn Hisham, was a wealthy and influential leader of the Quraysh. He was a staunch opponent of Islam and Prophet Muhammad (SAW). He would often mock and ridicule the Prophet, calling him a "madman" and a "liar." Abu Jahl would also incite others to harm the Prophet physically.
Abu Lahab, whose real name was Abdul Uzza, was another prominent leader of the Quraysh and an uncle of Prophet Muhammad (SAW). He was known for his cruelty and hostility towards the Prophet. He would often insult and humiliate the Prophet, and even went to the extent of placing thorns and obstacles in the Prophet's path to cause him physical harm.
Umm Jamil, Abu Lahab's wife, was equally cruel and would often join her husband in his persecution of the Prophet. She would throw garbage and filth on the Prophet's doorstep and even physically assault him on several occasions.
The persecution faced by Prophet Muhammad (SAW) was not limited to verbal abuse and physical harm. The pagan Arabs would also impose economic and social sanctions on the early Muslims, making it difficult for them to survive. They would boycott their businesses, refuse to marry into their families, and even force them to live on the outskirts of Mecca.
Despite the intense persecution, Prophet Muhammad (SAW) remained steadfast in his faith and continued to preach the message of Islam. He would often seek refuge in the cave of Hira, where he would pray and receive revelations from Allah.
