I’m working on a graphic novel that entails my want for relatively historically accurate pirate culture, and these videos of yours are helping a TON as reference material! I’ve learned a ton between these videos and reading up on other articles and texts elsewhere.
Definitely Sid Meier's Pirates been playing in on multiple systems since the days of my older brother's Commodore 64. If nothing else, I learned my geography of the Caribbean from it. And that guys who look like the Quaker Oats mascot always have daughters to be married off.
Since you asked: while in the navy, in 1970, a few mates and I got so drunk we were thrown out of the Amonia Hotel in Athens, a city bus arrived just behind the shore patrol: so we sent the patrol into the hotel, boarded the bus and returned to the ship.
@@GoldandGunpowder 3 and 4 were okay, but, to me, it seemed they were putting more effort into the graphics than the storyline, but all in all, a fun series.
My favorite game next to Sid Meier’s Pirates has to be “Pirates of the Caribbean” on Xbox. Originally named Sea Dogs 2 but POTC1 was released during that time so Disney just acquired the game mid-development lol The game itself has nothing to do with the movie at all but overall is really awesome and similar to Sid Meier’s Pirates, but it’s RPG!! With the exception of no character customization, but that doesn’t take away from the game’s experience.
Favourite pirate video game has to be sea of theives. Played it with my friend while both pissed drunk and sank our sloop after 5 minutes. Was a good laugh, would recommend.
Very interesting stuff. Maybe in a future video, you could briefly explore brewing aboard ships. I am sure it must have happened at some point and was a little bummed to not see it here but that's ok.
Really loving these videos! My grandfather told me that one of our ancestors is a captain named Richard worley and I have done some slight research on him. Its definitely gotten me more and more into the history! Btw if you could have a ship, what type would you have and what would the name be?
That is very cool! Worley lived a short career but did some interesting things. He captured a prison ship and some of his men married the female prisoners on board. Maybe you're descendant from one of those female prisoners? Thanks for sharing your story, more and more people are coming out and sharing their pirate ancestry. I'd have a sloop or similar small vessel, like a periagua, since those are the easiest to sail compared to a full-rigger, and I'd name her after the region she was taken or launched from.
@@GoldandGunpowder Thank you for giving me some extra information about Richard worley! I am proud to know that I have a pirate ancestor and that although his career wasn't long he lived how he wanted, wild and free! I knew he made a pact with his crew that they'd fight to the death rather than be captured. Also that apparently he was one of the first pirates to fly the jolly Roger but I don't think we'll ever know for sure. As for a ship id probably go for a sloop too. But I mean...if I happen to take over a Spanish galleon it would indeed make a fine addition to my collection lmao
I too have a minor "Pyrate" or more "Privateer" in my Family Blood line. He was a "Murphy" and was "Press Ganged" into service aboard a British ship. It was told that while the ship was docked at a town in Jamaica, mysteriously a large part of the docks and down were burned and most or all of the Irish and Scottish "Pressed Sailors" got away along with some English sailors that weren't very fond of the treatment aboard the ship. So they followed my ancestor and managed to gain a Sloop of notable size and made their way towards the Americas. They were captured by American Navel Ships off the coast of Florida and were given a Privateering Commission during the War of 1812 to harass British Ships! Near the end of the war he met a beautiful, dark skinned Creole woman and when the war was over he married her and sailed for the leeward isles off the coast of Jamaica and retired Wealthy and Happy! My favourite pirate video game that I have played was Pirates of the Caribbean Online. Enjoyed the video! Yes Rum and Pirates are very much entwined in the Caribbean! Lol! I review rums in my Pirate garb since, well, that is what people expect pirates to do! There is a Rum out of Puerto Rico called "Black Roberts Spiced Rum" which seems to be suggest the pirate Bartholomew Roberts...as you pointed out in your video he was a Teetoter, he didn't drink rum. I always wonder if that rum company's marketing company forgot to actually check the history of that famous pirate! Lol! They should be selling some kind of Tea instead!
thank you captain, i saw some people discussing the Bart Roberts rum brand in our discord server...it is silly to be sure, maybe an elaborate prank on the history buffs .)
To be sure you’re right. But that doesn’t mean he may not have dealt in it. Much like the cartels. They don’t partake of their own products knowing full well what they do.
I've got a mate who, for the want of some face paint & a feather, looks just like an Arawak Indian! One of his great, great, great ancestors was a Scottish pirate & got shipwrecked off the coast of Jamaica. He went on to become extremely rich in the sugar cane business but must have got jiggy with some of the locals along the way as this guy, Richard, is just like looking into the face of an aboriginal Indian, think modern day Rainforest Indians!
I love your videos. I am really interested in pirate ships and I would love some videos, that explain more about how those ships were sailed and commandered and what manuvers would be possible in combat or a storm.

Yes, sailing comprises many hours of sheer delight...and a few hours of helpless terror. And I was sailing for pleasure, so I can't even blame the need for a job. I think modern people have a very difficult time understanding just how "brutish, nasty and short" life was for practically everyone, even the rich, who might be having a good time, but also died young and suddenly. Today we have lost touch with our mortality (well, until it jumps on us). Today we deal with our existential anxieties with pharmaceuticals produced in laboratories, historically we used whatever was at hand: alcohol, cannabis, opium, and a wide variety of locally available mood-altering plants.
