We Americans still uses the air raid sirens to warn of tornadoes. I love this program because it gives me more of what my British relations have had to go thru the various decades.
If my ancestry had been used in this, I know I would have been in House #3.

5:26 my grandma didn't have a shelter but she and her mum and brother hid under the stairs. It was common that when the bombing stopped the staircases would be all that was left of the houses, but thankfully the bombs missed them. Or if they hit she never talked about it. Her dad was a pilot in the RAF and would go out every night until one night he simply didn't come back.
I love the Rabbits in this episode. It's so sweet when Mrs. Golding was holding one on the chair thinking about the children. Truly sweet.
This is my favorite of the Turning Back Time episodes! I actually have a ration book from this time period that belonged to my grandmother's family of 10, the rations are so tiny. I imagine people had to be so incredibly tough to make it through this.
Unbelievable. American here - this is awesome. I received my bach's in history and this segment really hit me hard - my beloved uncles served overseas and apparently received silver stars for their service however the whole family never found out until after they passed away. I'm just now going through the many many letters they sent their "kid sister" (my Mom!) while they were away. What strong brave people they were!
This is a wonderful series but this episode in particular has been moving,from rationing,sending the husbands and fathers off and so many of them never coming back home,the bombings,etc. to the beginning of women working outside of the home.The 1930s and 40s truly for better and worst was shaped by the second World War.
Golding is his name, what a daddy, and what a husband. He seems a total sweetheart.
It's really amazing to think that this is the sort of thing my grandfather would have lived through. To think of the courage that not just him but all people in Europe and the U.K. had to have possessed to get through that is absolutely astonishing. We really do take a lot for granted.

Considering those girls are used to being around horses constantly they sure arent very good around farm animals.
Yes they are way too squeamish for being used to work with horses and living in a rural setting back home.
as an American, we did not get bombed at our homes during WW2. it's horrible to think what British families had to go through.
makes me feel proud to be British. Morale was inspiring, and the organization, dad's army, land army etc.. Terrific! My dad used to tell me what he went through during those years, he was just a kid at the time near Manchester and his family was not rich. I know what it was like to go through air raids in Israel during the Iraqi scud attacks.. so.. I very much relate.

I know my mom would do a great job as a housewife on the home front. Her mom grew up in a one room shack with dirt floors in mexico and was poor, she brought that with her when she came to the states and my mom is not afraid to get her hands dirty.

I know that it's just a TV show, but after the victory in Europe and they're all at the dance hall, I notice that the flags of the allies are hung up on the stage - Britain, U.S.A. and Canada. But Canada didn't have its own flag until the 1960s. The maple leaf flag didn't even exist in WWII. At that time, Canada's flag was Britain's flag - The Union Jack. You'd think that a history show full of historians would know that.
This has been an amazing series. I agree with Abby; most of American television is pure shit so I'm grateful to have youtube and netflicks. Thanks so much for uploading these wonderful programs!

I love this series. I think the children are learning a lot and its obvious that the families are. I learned a lot more about the bombings in Britain. I am grateful for this series.
Given Germany, would’ve more than likely taken over and occupied the UK, as with Poland, it was only a matter of time for us to be involved, as Hitler wasn’t just eyeing Europe) so America, had to join the war, so we can save not only UK but ours also. It’s crazy to think why would we get involved in this war that’s overseas, leaving our daily lives interrupted but it made sense overall based on how many countries Nazi Germany managed to obtain throughout the interwar and war periods. Note: I love history so I know.
What a great episode. I was amazed by how realistic this episode was. Wow, our ancestors were truly strong men and women. The bomb recreations were terrifying. This was a very touching episode though. I really do like how all of the families kind of became friends and such.

They were much better off in their shelter than the poor East Enders who had to bed down on the underground platforms when the trains were still running......
Sorry but if the gas is off, take out the electric fire from the front room fireplace and light a fire in it to cook on, I've done this when I had to...........Or make a small fire in the back garden, 1940's barbie.........

"Mums of all classes" is misleading. Class was, as always, STILL the dividing line and CERTAIN mums did NOT "struggle to put food on the table". There was a HUGE black market and, as always, money AND "connections" were the governing factors.
How historically inaccurate. SOME mums in "all" classes? Yes. MOST mums in the upper classes? No. MOST mums in the lower classes? Of course!

Lord the guilt trip that historian is giving Phil and for no good reason. Black market and barter/trading happens all the time in times of scarcity. that's nothing knew. Even in 2020 with shortages there is bartering and trading going on.

That's true, but one has to keep in mind that the 50s, for Brits, were not the boom years they were for Americans. The decade started with tremendous debt. There were countless places bombed out and no money to fix it. Rationing remained until 1954. However, by the end of the decade wages had doubled and most people had never known such prosperity.

You're right, they should be using the Union Jack for Canada's flag. It was Canada's official flag until 1946. After that, the Red Ensign became the semi-official flag, until The Maple Leaf was officially adopted in 1965.
The majority of women at the time were eager to go back to domesticity once the war was over. Movies, documentaries and reality shows like to lead people to believe that women were unhappily forced to leave their jobs. It's just not factual. Yes there were some women who wanted to continue working, and many of them did. But the common goal at the time was to be a homemaker, and have children. Hence the baby boom. It's actually a very natural reaction after so many people die in a short period of time.
The common goal of men was to have women bac in the house. You woud be surprised how many women really did want to continue working.

To experience this again we all know is inevitable-Great question -Would we have what it takes to survive? Sadly I don't think we do.The people of this period were fresh from a previous period that involved a struggle to survive-And still it was difficult.To survive not only takes will-it takes knowledge-Survival knowledge is sorely lacking in the people of presently stable countries.Simple knowledge just doesn't exist.It has been replaced by dependence on utilities that are easily destroyed.

wow... knowing what is happening in Ukraine right now, just imagening what they go through right now... They are powerfull, spiritually powerfull. My own country (Latvia) has been through a lot, and now, seeing them (in the movie) experiencing a bit of what it is like,... Gosh, if the world war is what is going to stop Putin, I'm on board. And I have husband and four childrens, I know what is at stake, but if he is not stopped, than for all we know, the second USSR could happen. And believe me, you western-europens can't even imagine what it is like....

Well apparently there were. But when you look at the pictures of that time, they look more like little gasmasksuites.
