This is what drives me crazy about baseball..... Pete Rose should be in the hall of Fame, PERIOD!!! But if you're going to ban someone for life then it seems hypocritical to allow him to be honored in any way but it's impossible to tell the story of baseball and NOT acknowledge Charlie Hustle!!

@@williamanderson6006 no offense but unless you know something that nobody else does then you don't know how far his cheating went either. We can only go by what's on the record and I don't think MLB is in any moral position to call anyone out especially since they turned their heads when McGwire and Sosa were cheating their way to HR records which revived baseball only to have MLB turn their back on them once they got what they needed from their cheating ways. Bottom line is that Pete Rose should be in the Hall of Fame, PERIOD!!!

I watched this game and was joking that no way they would let Pete into the booth and then they did! What they don’t mention is the Phillies are the ones that put him in the announcing booth. He didn’t just let himself in there. Of course they don’t ask the Phillies ownership for accountability with their decision making. They know how Pete is and especially after the incident with the reporter they doubled down. I found his banter with Kruk to be hilarious. “I knew Kruk back when he had two balls.” I don’t care if that not PC that’s funny. Kruk replies that the other one is in a jar of formaldehyde at the University of Pennsylvania. I wish I would’ve recorded the whole half inning because I knew it would be incredible and it didn’t disappoint. Kruk was great during the broadcast telling stories with the alumni and told a story with Bowa that ended with him saying something that could’ve been dumped from the broadcast too but that was the way it was set up. They had a “player’s lounge” in the booth and it was supposed to be loose. Pete even joked that he forced to come on the air when he first came on. Then after the “two balls” quote he talked about the size of the testicles on a race horse he was offered by the Pirates when he was free agent before he signed with the Phils. And then there was the “cock high fastball” and him saying “shit” a few times. McCarthy was stuck between a rock and hard place because the “dude” side of his brain wanted to laugh but the voices in his earpiece was telling him to divert away from whatever Pete was saying. In a vacuum it was funny. Now that doesn’t mean that Pete still isn’t an asshole because even those who support him for his Hall of Fame bid know damn well he isn’t the best character. Especially the accusations from the 70s which if true are worse than any gambling accusations. I also love how they mention the “twenty something year old” like she was held captive and didn’t decide on her own that dating Pete would be a great publicity stunt and it got her a reality TV show. You can’t be politically correct and act like that woman doesn’t have the ability to make her own decisions. Pete wanted some young tail, screw the optics and she went into it to extend her 15 minutes of Fame. Saying “twenty something year old” is code for “she can’t consent” which is disingenuous. And that’s not defending his actions with the reporter…he looked like douche there and should’ve had a handler tell him how to answer those questions with a sense of remorse and empathy. Basically the Phillies knew they were playing with fire bringing Pete to the ballpark and even though I do find it commendable that they tried to honor a huge reason they won that 1980 World Series they were probably better off just having him walk on the field and then getting him the hell out of there.

I’m certainly far from right wing but the whole wokeness thing is a joke. When the Flyers had Pride Night and the one player didn’t join the pregame skate because he didn’t want to wear the Pride Jersey they tried to turn that into a big thing. I always thought the Flyers out their players in a bad situation to sell another jersey and that they should’ve had the players decide unanimously whether to wear them or not. And I’m for gay rights but I also played team sports and you don’t mix politics into a locker room. And that immediately caused a divide as some players were huge advocates for the cause while you had one player now ostracized because of his religious beliefs. Of course the coach was on the next day and they were grilling him for standing up for his player even though it was for his religious beliefs. Now the Russian Orthodox Church is a propaganda arm of Putin and his anti-gay agenda but that’s not the point here. Let’s say the player on the Flyers is black Muslim and he’s anti-homophobia…would there be the same outrage? This also led to them wanting to hear from members of the gay community because you know it’s not possible to not be able to empathize unless you are gay. My argument to that would be what sports radio guys who never played the game hate hearing most…”you never played the game so how are you an expert on it?” I’m not advocating white people to go around say what it’s like to be black because that too is disingenuous but certainly it is possible to understand some aspects of another person’s plight. I pointed out in another comment that he talks about the girl that Pete was dating and “going to casinos” with as the “twenty something year old” which implies that “she can’t consent” even though she’s a grown adult that Pete certainly wasn’t holding a gun to her head to date him and that she was a Playboy model probably dating him to extend her 15 minutes of Fame and because they had a reality show together and let’s face it Pete wanted some “young tail” optics be damned. Both got something out of that relationship. I just find it very “unwoke” that his girlfriend isn’t capable of making her own decisions. And that’s the slippery slope of trying to be woke, once you start playing that card someone will take one thing you say that isn’t quite PC and then label you what you label others.

You are an enabler. In court documents, Rose admitted that he had sex with the female but claimed that he did not do so until 1975, when she was 16 years old. The suit would later be dismissed after both sides reached an agreement. In Ohio, 16 years of age is considered the age of consent. Best of luck on your GED test!

    • @1981lashlarue

Well, since you're 16 you obviously have a lot of wisdom and life experiences to back up your opinion. I don't know what you mean by "no proof that Pete did anything..." He admitted to having a sexual relationship with a teenage (her age at the time depends on whose story you believe) while he was a married man. That's wrong any way you slice it. Whether it's legal or not, that's a deplorable example of how to live your life. No, people back then didn't sleep with teenagers when they were married in their 30s. Some did, sure, but it wasn't the norm then nor now (thank goodness). And even if it was, so what? You don't judge whether something is right or wrong by how many people are doing it. If you don't have a problem with that, then I guess that says a lot about your morals and ethics.

He's in his 80's. In his day that's the way he talked. That's the way alotta men talked, because it's the way they thought. I find it interesting that were all expected to understand whats taboo with every culture, race, color, creed, gender & our newest generations, but not when it comes to the aged, that's where we draw the line. There's no understanding for them. Elvis Presley dated a 14 year old & married her. so did Jerry Lee Lewis, except he one upped Elvis by marrying his cousin. I could go on about idols who were worshiped in the day & still are today that said & did things that don't fly today. Babe Ruth talked to women like Rose does. It was concidered playful back in the day. Our President George Bush while in a wheel chair teased a young reporter & tickled her on camera while in his 80's. The PC police who essentially became the WOKE movement wanted his head on a stick for it. For 60 years everytime they put a Mic in front of Rose he was the same. Many call it arrested development today, we called it set in his or her ways. They were comfortable in their own skin whether others liked it or not. If my mom felt insulted by some geezers language after the initial shock she'd say "what a charactor". It's just the way he talks. He doesn't mean anything by it. Or didn't mean it in a bad way. She called it giving the benefit of the doubt. Punishing them rarely occurred to her as the way to go. I use to think folks were pretty ridged in my day, but next to today's WOKE a Holics. they seem enlightened.

Baseball was never going to offer Rose any stipulations and Rose was never going to change his habits anyway. The only thing they could take away was the Hall of Fame and they made sure of that. So he will die an asterisk in the game. Then again, from a players and owners perspective, who cares about the game anyway unless it can be promoted in any form for the sole purpose of making money. It's not a game it's a gimmick. It is a nightly show much like a movie, in and out in three hours or less normally. In those three hours you might get 10-15 minutes of actual action. You get a guy pitching to a catcher. A guy swinging a stick, fouling several balls all over the place. The rest including fans are both watching this and their phones. Eating and drinking grossly overpriced concessions. Everybody has an image, players, Umpires, fans, they all gather and accomplish absolutely nothing. It isn't ultimately all worth a nickel, never was, except some pride when, lord I can't remember anymore, it was a game.

When Rose was called into Bart Giammatti's office in 1989, Giammatti made him wait in the reception area for over an hour. There were a bunch of portraits of hall of famers in his reception area, people that Rose had played with and against. It made him angry that his own portrait wasn't among them so when Giammatti came out to greet him, Pete Rose turned to Giamatti and with a very cocky tone of voice said, "How come I ain't up there?" I believe that, at that monent Pete Rose sealed his fate for the rest of his life. If he had gone in there with his hat in his hand, with some genuine humility, and with some genuine regret for what he had done, it would've went down as a footnote in baseball history, but when he showed that cocky, unrepentant attitude of, "Why ain't I up there?", Giammatti decided right then and there that he was going to ban him for life and, even after that, he didn't admit that anything he had done was wrong for almost 20 years. I honestly believe that he sealed his own fate with his cocky unrepentant attitude with Giammatti that day. I love the guy but there's no question he has character flaws and caused a lot of his own self-inflicted wounds.

So the Phillies, class organization that they are tried to give him a platform, and baseball too looking to maybe put some things behind everyone. Then what happens some reporter goads the guy about something that happened 50 years ago, incredible!! What is he to say, he is pushing senility and that is the question, in fact it was two questions. I dont give him a complete pass, but why goad the guy about some statutory rape shit that happened half a century ago? What angle was the reporter pushing. Shame, a damn shame the whole thing, Pete will probably die now before he gets in and its a shame too. Anybody know who the reporter was who asked about the statutory rape case, and listening to these guys here was disappointing too. How many PED users are in the HOF? You tell me? Zero as far as I'm aware. They consistently vote to keep them out-- Bonds, McGwire, Sosa, Palmero, Clemens, Rodriguez... Most of those players were Hall of Famers without steroids so the fact that the HOF consistently votes to keep them out tells us hall they feel about those "cheaters." Rose, in some respects, has been not treated well or fairly by baseball. However, his banishment is not one of them. He did the wrong that got him banished. He agreed to the banishment. It doesn't appear that he has rehabilitated himself from the problem that got him banished. He lied about it for many years and falsely maligned those that accused him as being liars when they were in fact telling the truth. Exactly what right does he have to be bitter towards baseball?
