Humans are social creatures by default, even people who claim to be “introverts” or “antisocial” tend to subconsciously WANT human interaction in their lives, they are just not good at obtaining it so they just give up and feel unhappy for the rest of their lives, even if they trick themselves at thinking “they are happy being alone” . As a security officer in RL, The music isn't unsettling, even at night this wouldn't really creep me out but the absence of any life, that can become unsettling. Nobody around, you hear a noise "What was that?"
@@chriss7 trust me. Some locations we are contracted to have us only watching say a drop-off/pick-up area and you're there til midnight waiting for one truck. I've listened to music like this there and it didn't creep me out, just the absence of anything living besides me.
You're just in the empty establishment waiting, and then you hear some creepy noise, you look up creeped out and as you're about to ask yourself "What was that?" you hear a voice, in the same room as you go "What was that?"
As a student I was a security guard in many random buildings in a city at night. At first it used to be slightly unnerving being there, then, since nothing usually ever happened on my watch, it became oddly comfortable. At times I used to listen to Aphex Twin ambience and it felt like time stopped - especially at winter.
That room at 0:40 looks like a room from a dream I had. In the dream, my mom and I were looking at houses to potentially buy. When we toured one house, we walked into the master bedroom and it was so cramped and stuffy, like the picture shown, that you felt uneasy inside of it. The air smelled moldy and damp, and there was only one tiny window at the end of the room that provided no natural light whatsoever. The furniture in the room was this all this heavy and bulky dark wood furniture that made you feel claustrophobic.
One terrifying area that will forever be engrained into my head is the subway area from that musical parody of wizard of oz (someone please remind me what it is!). Especially the scene where she escapes but starts to just hear the loud footsteps from the subway. It’s so well lit and kept together, which makes it more eerie.

This was my first introduction to liminal spaces on the internet. You really came in that the perfect time to share this dude. You definitely played a role in popularizing it more too.
ikr? i hate that picture bc all airports look similar and it makes me imagine there is no one around bc something really bad happened there while i was flying and i just got there so idk what's going on i just know i have to get tf out
I haven't gotten *off* one, but the first time I went on a plane, they told me "Arrive two hours early" for the first flight. I walked in and it was just this giant, empty building. Combination of unsettling, but oddly relaxing?
That actually happened to me recently. I flew to Las Vegas at the end of March. I got in at like 9:00pm, and the giant Las Vegas airport was literally completely empty, save for the other people on the plane. It was genuinely creepy.
For those of you who don't know, These images are known as Liminal spaces, which are places that feel familiar but aren't, and somewhat feel off or in comfortable. Mostly emptiness.
I can define these places, they are called liminal spaces which are spaces that are the threshold between reality and dreams, these images use the feelings of autophobia which is the fear of being alone. So whilst being in a liminal space you feel like people are with you but in reality nobody is there. liminal spaces also hold memories, these memories are full of nostalgia, while looking at these pictures you can feel like you have been there before but actually you have been there in your dreams, that's why they seem so familiar and seem like they hold memories.
The pictures are unnerving because the locations are abandoned. Humans use each other for reassurance so being alone can drive the human mind crazy, which is how people develop mental insanity.
This is exactly why I'm sure most post apocalyptic movies and other media undermine the feeling of truly being alone. My bet is most normal people would go insane or at least start experiencing hallucinations or paranoia really badly after some time of being alone
A lot of these places also seem like places people would go as little kids (playgrounds, school hallways, 90s or 2000s looking shopping centers, etc). Something about places like that being empty is extra unnerving, like you're stuck in a vague memory or something.
I remember years ago entering a random server of Valve's Ricochet (I got a Valve pack and it was included) and it being totally abandoned made me have some strange feelings
@@diegoab5280 Same but in roblox. I was entering this old famous game. There were only 200 players there. But when i joined, it was empty. Nobody there. Maybe i joined an empty server? I don't know.
I can see this happening with me because I know damn well I forget where a place is, but a photograph will trigger something. Even if it's a false memory
They look familiar because most of these pics are of things weve all been to like school, a pool, a mall, apartment buildings, the airport...and the fear is from the creepy music and feeling alone or isolated.
The most creepiest part is the fact that everything can be where the camera isn't looking at, or just something right around that corner we see but we arent allowed to see further which makes the feeling of curiosity but at the same time not wanting to see more
The first picture gave me this weird sensation of safety and danger at the same time, it's as if i snuck inside this shopping mall that i have been to several times during my childhood, exept this its late at night and the place is already closed, theres only a few lights on, just enough so i can walk arround without being surrounded in darkness but not enough to get rid of those dark areas, it's almost as if there is something hiding in the dark watching me, i know i'm technically safe but at the same time theres aways that feeling of something being slightly wrong, while the pool picture gave me this feeling of cozziness and uneasy, i can almost feel the hot air arround me comming from the heated pool, almost as if it's inviting me to take a swim there, but at the same time i have the sensation that it's a trap and that if i don't keep walking something bad is going to happen.
Oddly enough, 1:00 does actually look very similar to this dream I once had as a child. I was at school, yet the building was totally different, and I remember walking out doors like these. Outside was more sunny, but still. Nice!
Basically this is how feels to play portal or any Half-Life game, terrifying atmospheric music, while u are alone trying to scape in a weird old place.

Liminal Images. They are images that feel oddly familiar, but at the same time uncomfortable. Not scary, uncomfortable. I feel like it boils down to it being used without its original intention, and the lack of people or personalization. A supermarket is supposed to be full of people, a parking lot is supposed to have cars, a park is supposed to have happy children, ect. The fact that none of the original intention happens in these photos causes eeriness, it feels like there is a disturbance, or a force. Also, the lack of personal items, or any personality at all causes a sense of dread to it. The most there really is are chairs or couches. Let's take for example, an office. Offices have people rushing, cubicles, chairs, fans, personalities for each part of the office, strip all of that away, and you get something like the Backrooms, completely void of anything to do or see, nothing is there. All personality is gone, and all we are left with a dead, infinite looking hallway. It feels like we missed out on something big or special after seeing it taken away. Also, the fact that there are still lights on gives a feeling of purpose, despite nothing around. It feels like there is some other entity, due to the fact that the lights still are on, meaning someone is still using it. That's why I think there is some form of eeriness, uncomfortable effect, even disturbing. I cant explain the nostalgic feeling, because there are many people who can do it way better than me
The reason these places are nostalgic has part to due with the music and the title. The title gets our mind prepared, it tricks us into thinking we know these places when in reality we don’t know most of these places and also the angles they are taken at helps the nostalgia factor. It also helps that one of mankind’s greatest fears is present, autophobia: the fear of being alone; feeling like you are being watched. We humans are naturally social creatures and when we have no one we are terrified and when someone is watching us we get disturbed. It is also the odd feeling of isolation, there is not one single person in any of these pictures and some of these places are usually filled with hundreds of people so it’s unsettling to see no one, another thing is the fact that you start to wonder “what could of happened to these people.” You start to wonder if something supernatural could have something to do with their disappearance. Either way it is truly a oddity when it comes to psychology that not Even I can explain and I have studied psychology for many years.
t-pose virus t-pose virus *whispers* hey, don’t listen to that guy... these are all real life places and they’re all pinned in the comment section, I think denzy is just high
I do, & its weird bc some are incredibly familiar to a lot of memories, others r like... "okay I've seen smth vaguely similar to this before. But what? Where? When? idk"
For some reason, they cause me to recall dreams that were left behind in memory. They seem to hit all the right memory addresses. UPDATE: Just wrote down in a notebook a whole bunch of my previously-undocumented dreams. That felt good.
Funny part is, 1:40 is a part of the backrooms. A place with no escape and with levels that are mostly limital spaces. What are limital spaces you may ask? They're places that look familiar and give you both nostalgic and creepy vibes. It feels like you've been there before, but they look a bit off, empty, unfinished. Why? Because there isn't a single person there. Thats what gives it a limital vibe.
i had a horribly horrible vivid dream where i was in some sort of large daycare kids center thing, with different rooms with funky patterns and toys and it was so real, so fucking terrifying and awful. nothing bad or scary happened, but i was so lucid and i felt so unsafe and totally and completely alone and i had this constant dread of “i’m not supposed to be here, something is wrong here” i woke up in tears and so grateful to be anywhere but in that building. i never want to feel like i did in that dream again. the photos that fit that daycare place were 0:40, 1:20, 3:00, and 3:20. it sounds mad stupid and dramatic but i teared up looking at those photos because it felt just like that stupid mf dream 😔✌️
I think it’s because we were all so young last time we were in a place like that that we formed vague unreliable memories that seem surreal when they resurface. They’re just floating around in the back of our brains somewhere. Unless you have a kid of course.
I had a dream where I was stuck with 3 girls, two were twins and one was alone, we were stuck in a transylvanian castle with this creepy old guy looking for us, we ran up the spiral stairs and we his behind a few boxes, then suddenly the dream repeats itself like 3 times, then I woke up, that dream was so weird and who were the girls-(btw they were as scared as me and we were all together running and hiding)
I had a dream about a park, it was really fucking dark and there were humanoid beings in it, I found a video, one of the images, was the exact same park in my nightmare, what’s funny is, the video is a video about places we’ve seen in our dreams, and, I’ve never seen that image of the park before, nor have been to it.. It’s in this video th-cam.com/video/2KykU-X5jYs/w-d-xo.html
Dude, I think i painted something like this in a 3rd grade . Or i wanted to paint it like that, actually having a feeling like i remembered something in my deep memory, or i am just crazy
The last picture brought back a memory that I’ve repressed for years. When I was little, my mother used to drive us down a steep hill and I would always express to her how much I hated that road. It was in poor condition and was only wide enough for one car, but the part that scared me the most was when the car started to shake whenever the “road” would straighten. I hate how much I recognize the last picture. It’s unnerving.

And you start teleportating to these places :)
Finally someone said that
The pictures are unnerving because the locations are abandoned.
@@Walamonga1313 Fallout's Vault 77 is a good example of the human mind going insane when in isolation.
A lot of these places also seem like places people would go as little kids (playgrounds, school hallways, 90s or 2000s looking shopping centers, etc). Something about places like that being empty is extra unnerving, like you're stuck in a vague memory or something.

I cant explain the nostalgic feeling, because there are many people who can do it way better than me
Wow, Thats an amazing explanation to why these are so eerie.
Amazing.
Some of them remind me of elementary and high school.
It’s called autophobia , the fear of being alone but feeling as if there is something watching at an angle you can’t see.
The images don't creep me out, the fact that they are real life places does (be careful down there in the replies people, it's a warzone now....)

They're places that look familiar and give you both nostalgic and creepy vibes. It feels like you've been there before, but they look a bit off, empty, unfinished. Why? Because there isn't a single person there. Thats what gives it a limital vibe.
Your one of those mfs who turns everything into back rooms huh
@@Nelson91616it makes alot of appearances in backrooms animations so they arent wrong
It's a photo of a basement commonly found in american suburban homes
i had a horribly horrible vivid dream where i was in some sort of large daycare kids center thing, with different rooms with funky patterns and toys and it was so real, so fucking terrifying and awful. nothing bad or scary happened, but i was so lucid and i felt so unsafe and totally and completely alone and i had this constant dread of “i’m not supposed to be here, something is wrong here” i woke up in tears and so grateful to be anywhere but in that building. i never want to feel like i did in that dream again. the photos that fit that daycare place were 0:40, 1:20, 3:00, and 3:20. it sounds mad stupid and dramatic but i teared up looking at those photos because it felt just like that stupid mf dream 😔✌️
I remember a dream like this back when I was growing up. Fucking spooky man
sam ei have had a dream like that and i've been to an abandoned mall that gave me the same vibes like these photos do..its so creepy
This looks like something that would be in a game’s loading screen
Damn tell me which games you're playing
Some horror game with map loading in screen
Now traveling to...[REDACTED]
Alexander Urdaneta call of duty black ops zombies
bitch what the fuck are you playing
3:21 I HAVE LITERALLY PAINTED THIS EXACT HALLWAY A YEAR AGO OMG
no way, i just thought it looked like something i’d see in my dreams
@@ffloat it's exactly what David Lynch thought, apparently, because that's probably a hallway from Twin Peaks
It reminded me of soul eater
Dude, I think i painted something like this in a 3rd grade . Or i wanted to paint it like that, actually having a feeling like i remembered something in my deep memory, or i am just crazy
I literally made this hallway in minecraft
Liminal spaces and dreamcore are so comforting to me idk why i love all these videos sm
It’s unnerving.
damn.
That’s the point...
To be unnerving and familiar
NOOO I FEEL SO BAD FOR YOU LMAO GIVE ME A HUGG
do you remember where is this street? Can i have the address?
@@yerischerries3010 group hug
1:00 thats literally my old elementary school, same exact blacktop, same dumpster, same doors, same walls, same exact fire extinguisher place, same exact hill outside.
Oh wow
😳
Shit my guy
Heck nope nope nope
I feel bad for you dude not gonna lie
I feel like something should be jumpscaring me in all of these pictures
Same here... Creepy.
Same.
some of these look exactly like horror games or movies
0:42
AgustinBre omg yes i get the feeling that something is gonna come up the stairs
I remember when i first watched this video, and this is the reason why i like liminal space, weirdcore, traumacore...
I was like “oh these aren’t too bad” and then the last one hit...
1:40 I think the thing that makes this unnerving is the lack of furniture.
Toaster and the lack of people. There are no people except the camera man or woman in these photos.
The thing I hate the most is the room on the far left
FBI AGENT yeah, that’s a pretty good point too.
@@happygamer_18 I feel like it's going to close slowly or do the "lights out" thing
FBI AGENT yeah same
Normal people's dreams: money, romances, luxuries
My dreams:
I once had a dream where I "remodeled" joey drew studios in bendy and showed it off to the class, then went home. And another dream ive had varients of is going to like car riders and not finding my mom.
my dreams r just nightmares and backrooms pictures
ah yes, bout nukes.
too
my dreams are rather cursed
It is crazy how every music fits the picture almost perfectly...
2:24 Imaging seeing someone standing on the right far away and he just starts to run towards you
Run... Just run... And don't look back
HELLLLLL NO
No💀
“oh hey, didn’t mean to spook you, you getting on the spoop plane too?”
FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK.
How to take an unnerving picture:
- go to an abandoned place
- use the camera flash
- profit
Pools are the worst of them all
*stonks*
Rachael Elkins how to become billgates in 2.4 seconds
Imagine being in one of these places then the music starts
Oh heck no😂
Asashi to the no no no
Okay I was laughing but 2:42 looks EXACTLY like where I am now. I’m not joking
4:00 yup
I know I wouldn't be there anymore.
i just can never explain why some liminal photos look like something from the 80's and it just gives a feeling i can't explain like it feels welcoming but unnerving at the same time and i wonder if anyone gets this feeling
Imagine this scenario:
Hey this house looks familiar! Oh right, because i live there! Wait a minute...
I hope you enjoyed giving me nightmare material c:
The one with the house looks like my garage and I hate it
