He's was my coach! And I lived on the same street. One hot summers night me and my ex partner were sat on the doorstep about midnight, Bomber came running up the street and shouted 'stay there!' He came out with 2 skipping ropes and said come on! and started to skip back down the street... We left him to it lol One of the nicest guys you could ever meet, and one hell of a punch on him :-)
Herol Graham had been a pro for 12 years before he got a world title fight. Think about that. That's the same as if Chris Eubank had had to wait until 1997 before he fought for a word title or Nigel Benn not getting a title fight until 1999. Had that been the case, neither of those would've won world titles either!
I hate to be that guy but if I could offer one counter point I’d say the difference back then was that everyone had SKILLS. You see a great deal of talent these days in the form of great athletic ability, explosiveness, speed etc. But the sweet science and technical understanding of boxing was most widespread in that time period before the sport became so commercialized and watered down with “trainers” instead of real coaches.
the best never to get a title. Gentleman. Legend. Awesome man. I sparred with him and he put me off work for 2 months. He barely touched me. A sweetheart.
you don't need to put the "to have never won a world title" bit. He was just awesome. He used to train by having his hands tied down with sparring partners trying to catch him. They very rarely could.
I always remember when he switched trainers and lost. His ex trainer was at the ringside and I always remember his words, "That is (X?) years down the drain. I have never seen him get hit so much."

Quite right. These other idiots clearly know nothing about boxing. They certainly don’t remember how impressively he won his British and European titles, or that Julian Jackson’s men were going to throw in the towel during his title fight because Herol was embarrassing their man so badly. Or the fact that Roberto Duran fired him as his sparring partner because he couldn’t hit him. He was a remarkably skillful boxer to watch. Anybody who really appreciates boxing could see it straight away, no question.

@88Burbank How?? Prince won many world titles. Graham was clearly good but evidently lacked the power to get to world level. The truth is, Graham had the technique but not enough to take it upwards like Prince did.
@88Burbank Bro, Prince is a 2x unified world champion, you can't deny that. Graham was an "almost" ......he was the predecessor to Prince but that's it haha. Prince excelled him in every way, shape & form! Graham never even fought the best in his division & fell short. Herol had the potential to be a world champ at light-middleweight but they never made the fights. Once he moved up to middleweight he was never quite the same and as time moved on those great reflexes started to lose timing and he started to get caught with punches that would have breezed past him before.
He still was really good and had a close decision loss against the legend body snatcher and he was outworking both the 2 other reining champions he faced easily the last time he fought for a title he came out of a pretty long retirement to make one last push for the super middleweight title and he scored 2 knock-downs before he got caught
Good but flawed. Depended too much on reflexes and left that chin hanging in the air. Was wide with his punches and defensively irresponsible, but still a pretty good fighter.
