My wife just looked over my shoulder to see what I was watching, and said "WTF are you watching?!?" Just realized the weirdness of a guy sitting in a nice dining room talking about transformers wearing a skull mask.... lol
ZetZatar I chose Quakewave over the official MP; he just looks so much more menacing, Will be keeping Sunsurge. The MP has some nice features, but the BC offering has some better aesthetics.
As Sunstreaker is my favorite, I'll have to get the MP version, but BadCube did such a great job with Sunsurge I could almost pass it up. I will definitely be keeping Sunsurge! Thanks for putting all those side by side shots together!
You hit the nail on the head regarding the face paint; for me, the silver paint job on the face vs. the grey paint is a make or break factor. I've always preferred the silver, like the original toy line always did. The grey face misses the point imo. Yes, the faces were only grey in the cartoon because you can't convey silver with the flat colors they used, but even then, you'd sometimes see the artists add reflective streaks on the faces to try and make them look more metallic. So CLEARLY, using grey was just something they had to do due to the limitations of the medium. But giving the toys that grey face to match the cartoon just doesn't work for me. It's just one more reason I tend to favor 3rd party over Takara.
Great video Bobby...I'm really enjoying these Sitdown Saturday discussions! I've got Badcube Sunsurge and I'm happy with it, not enough of a change with the official imo. If collectors want to swap out or they passed on Badcube - more power to them!
I did he same thing as soon as they announced MP Hound. As much as I loved my Fans Toys Willis, the engineering was always so frustrating and I know Takara will do a much better job as far as tranformation is concerned. I sold my Willis and now anxiously waiting for the release date of MP-45 Hound
Great job on these new series of videos. Its nice to watch a video on a topic that I'm sure almost every mp scale collector is deffinately thinking of. I have sunsurge and I will prob keep him and get the takara one as well. Maybe one day we can have full shelf of takara and a full shelf of 3rd party. the options are just amazing right now.
Good points all around. I already sold mine a months ago before the Takara one was a thing. A collector in a group I'm in really wanted one so I sold it at what I paid. Now with Sunstreaker coming out I'll dip back in the pool.
I agree with Bobby. Im happy with my BC Sunsurge. Would I rather support Takara? Yes. But do I want to spend another 100 bucks on something that looks like what I have? No.
Love your sit down Saturday videos! To borrow a line from Doc Holiday, "my hypocrisy only goes so far" I really like the look of the new MP39, but I cant pay that much for a name. I'm still on the fence about MP36, looks awesome, but that price! Maybe my hypocrisy will know no bounds after all. Damn that plastic crack!
Couldn't agree more man. Ive already started down this road skipping mp megs as I still prefer despotron. really enjoying these discussion vids too btw, great job.
I agree that both the BadCube and Takara are very similar but I will be upgrading to the Takara version because I like the proportions better and it does not use balljoints in the shoulders. The backpack is off-putting but I will be looking at it from the front most of the time anyway. Great video, keep them coming!
I feel you man. MP Megatron is much better than Appolyon but I dont feel like I want to replace my Appolyon just yet. 3rd party offerings are getting more and more excellent.
josef rootgum Josef said EXACTLY what I was thinking about my exact situation with Megatron. the Takara one looks better side by side but when I have the DX9 on the shelf I always go That's MP Megatron. plus I'm not dealing the grey Meg as much as the silver.
Takara Megatron is better looking 360 degrees all around, its arms are closer to the body, the face looks stunning and it has those butterfly joints Megatron demands for those poses typically associated with him, BUT!!! As it is, the buyers are the testers so there are lots of kinks to work out, like paint scuffing and tolerance issues. Yes, i do recommend that you replace Apollyon for the official version because its worth it overall, but not until they released a reissue and the market starts to get fed up with him and lowers the cost. Sometimes the waiting game pays off and who knows, MAYBE Hasbro will try their luck on him or something similar with western sounds instead of japanese and different paint
I really want a Wei Jiang OS Megatron in normal MP scale. The official doesn't do it for me. I leave him off to the side and I keep my Apollyon with my display,
I like these sit down Saturday videos, that being said, I know there were 3rd Party Sunstreakers, but hopefully the MP-39 Sunstreaker will be better in some ways than we previously seen with 3rd party. Hopefully will see a review of it soon, when it gets released into retail.
Just saw how the new MP39 transforms and what the real thing looks like, I find myself at a point of dilemma whether to switch out my Sun Surge for all the gimmicks from Takara and I turn to your video. Still contemplating whether I can accept that back pack and butt flap. Looking forward to your review on MP39 as it might help me decide whether to get it. Keep up the good vids!!
Great video Skull Brother!!! I agree 100% with everything you said. For me the only versions of this character that I have are the G1 and combiner wars. I've been wanting an MP version of this guy for a while. So what I'm going to do iu s wait for your review and if the TAKARA VERSION is that much better I'll bite the bullet and get that. However if it's not I'll gladly take the BAD CUBE offering for $50 LOL...
Im very torn honestly. My biggest problem is that I dont like to sell my figures if I am "upgrading them" so that means dropping another $100 on a replacement. Im not a fan of, what i feel, is price gouging with Takara. But Im glad they are at LEAST starting to roll out stuff more. Right now, Im on hold. Great video again for your talking points!
Understandable sentiment. Official Sunstreaker will be the first attempt at this guy I will be owning, but if I had a previous 3P figure I really liked, chances are I'd stay with it too.
Some good point made there. I try to collect Takara wherever possible but I got royally pissed with MP Hound and those two fragile plastic hinges on the rear of the vehicle mode. First time (gently) transforming it (watching your review as I did weirdly enough) and that fucker broke instantly. SO due to that, I have been giving consideration of late of investigating the 3rd party market to see if they can cater for my needs.
re: cost. I am someone who enjoys transforming these guys. MP Ironhide, Megatron and Artfire are some of the most fun to transform figures I've bought in memory. I am severely impressed with the big, sturdy joints they're using. Much as I adore Sideswipe, I get nervous about all those thin panels. Prowl, Tracks and Wheeljack all have worryingly tight joints and pegs in addition to thin panels. I don't want to be afraid to play with something I paid this much money for. So for the improvements in tolerances ALONE I am willing to pay more. Not to mention designs that are clearly aware of the third-party releases and are working hard to outdo them. Simply put, the designers are putting in more work, and I am always happy to reward effort. When I got MP Megs and Artfire, I felt that every penny I'd spent was worth it.
Also, much as I love BadCube Wardog, I think I'd rather not have that degree of tiny fiddliness in a slender Lamborghini. Big tank? That's fine. With Sunstreaker, I want the improved hinges and tolerances that recent MPs have displayed.
Good video, glad I watched. Sunstreaker looks good, but too much yellow for me. Just as Inferno is too red. Hopefully Takara gets to Mirage,Jazz,Jazz and Hound soon. And yea the third parties, some of the figures are getting good. I know its oldish by now,but I want the MMC Feral Rex so bad.
Yo Yo Yo Yo damn Skullface you have a cup of joe or two LOL great energy you bring to the table and yea all in for MP Sunstreaker! Good Saturday to you.
Didn't bite on Sphinx or Sunsurge for exactly this reason. I decided a couple years sgo to sit back and wait for Takara for almost everything. The only 3rd party figures I've bought recently are Fanstoys Dinobots and Jetfire.
I passed on Gundog and Downbeat because you know that Takara is gonna release official product for those characters. I'm just a Masterpiece nutball, but I totally see your point.
Bought the Takara ONLY because a retailer failed to deliver sunsurge to me and this was made available and hence I bought the Takara. Oh for me, this is Takara best car bot till date.
Everytime you do these Saturday morning specials (lol) I always get side tracked and stare @ your WILDC.AT.S collection in the background. I had all those but was accidentally donated to Goodwill. Anyways Gr8 discussion and as always,Get WHATEVER THE F#$K YOU LIKE. So tired of hearing ppl here either putting down 3rd party or putting down Takara. Just be happy and Thankful we all have choices. RANT MODE (OFF) ON
Considering I do not have a Sunstreaker yet, I will likely acquire the Takara version, considering that Sunsurge is still $100 on the sites I have seen plus shipping. Although, I understand the dilemma, Sunsurge is by no means a low quality offering, and why replace something that is only marginally better? Loving the Saturday Morning Discussions.
If I was you, I would wait for the MP to come out and compare side by side. The MP has a lot going for it, but the side view, butt flap, and big backpack may make the MP not such a clear cut winner. Also, Sunsurge has a very sleek, thin look that is very character accurate. The MP looks chunky around the chest in the photos.
I should probably clarify, what I was trying to ask everyone to consider :). I think I first noticed it with the 3P inferno releases, followed by the official. I'm not saying Takara have been plagiarising the 3P companies but I definitely think the existence of these releases is both providing Takara with design cues and also forcing them to up their game. I think if the likes of Sunsurge didn't exist then it's very possible the Takara version wouldn't be as polished (ignoring the buttflap) or possibly even exist at all. I'm happy that I supported Badcube (and other 3P companies) and I will continue to buy more 3P, maybe focus on more obscure characters in the future though. Thoughts?
At this point, we are getting close to the point where every G1 character has been made. You have to decide whether you are good with what you have or if you are willing to upgrade. I personally decided to go the route of getting rid of my 3P MP because I figure Takara will eventually make everything. Even if they don't, they've made enough of the characters that I'm happy with what we have already.
I'm willing to invest in the Takara Sunstreaker, since it will be my first and I'm currently building my Transformers Masterpiece G1 collection. However, I do feel the price should be about $10-$20 cheaper, especially when you factor in shipping costs.
Bobby, I agree with you like 99% of the time. I find your arguments true and insightful. I do know that you don't reply to these comments.... But I want to say one thing... Please mark this post because I'm 99,99% sure that you will be replacing BC Sunsurge with Takara's Sunsreaker :). And you will admit it, when you'll be doing MP Sunstreakers review half year from now :). Keep up with good work! Always a fan! :) Best regards! Tenkarlos.
This is the first time I've been in a position of having to swap out a 3P for a TT and for me, this is a happy upgrade. Totally understand people who don't feel that way, but as good as Sunsurge was there were things I wasn't happy about and it looks like TT's version is better in many of those respects. Tell you what I'll be really reluctant to swap out though... if TT ever makes a Mirage. I'm super attached to MMC's!
I have debated between Sunsurge and Spinout. I liked how Spinout looked, but after reviews I didn't want to waste money on it. I don't like the Badcube version or the Takara one. But if I started collecting again, I'd go with the Takara because the torso is all yellow without the black breakup on Sunny, and the "FEET" look better.
I feel like Takara being so focused on muh g1 accuracy means you end up with a bot 10% better looking than it's rivals at the expense of terrible Transformations and a very panel heavy design from every angle from the front.
If I like the character enough, I'll keep all offerings. I don't mind having so many Megatrons. I have both DX9 & Fans Toys Galvatrons since they are priced like the eHobby reissues. I wish Fans Toys would release their FT-01 Acoustic Wave because one Masterpiece Soundwave isn't enough. I mean, how many Optimus Primes are out there?
I have MP-39 on pre-order, can't wait to get him! I came in late buying Sunsurge, all the stores were out of him, and if anyone had him they wanted $300+! F*ck dat! So I resorted to the POS version from Omnigonix who I disliked, I ended up buying Sentinel Blaze from Badcube instead to make up for it. THEN, Badcube re-released so of course I jumped on that. Now I'll have a fourth version of him I guess.
Good thing it turned out well lol. I was one of those people that sold their sunsurges as soon as Takara announced MP-39. Haven't regretted it ever since.
im in the exact same situation as you are with this one but, that fans toys hot rod now....that is a different story lol. i will be upgrading there cause i dont really like the takara one.
I know you caught it in video, but I laughed out loud the first time you said "MP-39 will be the best Masterpiece Sunsurge there is", and then repeated it with the same wording as if trying to make sure people caught what you actually said. Thanks for the discussion, I really am enjoying these. You really do a good job of covering all the points.
Really enjoying these discussion videos man! I know what you're saying about 'choices', I used to be all in for any takara & major 3rd party offerings but both have had their disappointments lately, so now I'm being much more picky - cost-benefit ratio - is this worth my time & ££? I'm definitely in on MP Sunstreaker because I tend to avoid Badcube, but it's an interesting question across the board now, e.g. Takara would have to put out the mother of Galvatron's before I'd let Sovereign slip from his throne
I agree that mp looks much better but I already dropped $90 on sunsurge from badcube. I said I will wait to see reviews and if he blows me away I will change the figure out. To bad I didn't sell sunsurge when he was going to $300 on eBay
I must admit I only buy 1st party for now but my reasoning is simple: while I like some of the third party offerings, first party figures hold their value if not increase over time so therefore my collecting doubles as an investment of sorts. It always puzzles me on the forums when guys complain about pricing on Takara MPs and then go buy a 3rd party figure who's value halves when hastak brings their version out. I also like my logos grafted on and try to avoid stickers when possible.
I might be wrong but from poring over the pictures, it seems that all the parts to make him look like a real world car are actually built in.. like the rear lights unfold from the g1 cartoon look to turn into the real world version. but i could be mistaken
Takara doesn't really care much ultimately. The odds of them disappointing again are high, IMO. I like my Badcube stolen-character-design toy design Sunstreaker, it's a KO of intellectual property.
Now that Takara have started producing MP's at a more consistent rate, I'm more inclined to wait rather than buy a 3rd party I'd most likely end up replacing.
While I agree on most of your point, Bobby. I don't think inflation has much to do with Sunny priced much higher than other mp cars. Since, Inferno, Takara just had 3rd party tested the market for them and they increase their price higher. With all the recent re-issue MPs with lower price, we can see they actually have lower cost after they moved their factory. It's more like if you want the first release, you have to pay more. Since, I don't own a BC version and Takara looks a bit more satisfying to me, I am going to go for Takara THIS TIME. If the official keep increasing the price, we may find more products with better price or/and quality from 3rd parties in the future.
if the collectors had any discipline they'd be patient for takaras release and never have to face the conundrum of swapping out... like me :) ..also bundle ship ems from Japan to save on shipping... again be patient do you really need mp whatever asap...
i feel your pain regarding having to make tough buying decisions, my savings quiver in fear every time maketoys release a new product for their cross dimensions line. i am considering becoming a male escort to subsidise the purchase of their new thunder erebus model.
I know that it's a small matter, but the faction logo is no longer consistent with my collection. I don't want half my Autobots having the animation design.
These 3P companies are all chasing that same 1984-85 Masterpiece cash. If they want to make people sit up and take notice, they would make toys from the other years. Let's see the Car Robots. Let's see Fire Convoy and Star Convoy. Want variety? There are a couple of dozen MicroMasters teams. As for KOs, when things like the MPP10 are better than the TT and Hasbro versions, theyre on the table for me.
When I first saw the MP Sunstreaker I really felt bad for buying Sunsurge. The back cleaned up so nicely; the feet are so much better; and the thigh holster is awesome. However, looking closer at the overall sculpt, I am happier with BC. MP Sunstreaker is ugly from the side view, and looks too bulky in the midsection. I always considered Sunstreaker to be sleek. BC has a much slimmer look. Also the BC jetpack looks more in the style that I like, even if it isn't 100% cartoon acurate. Also, Takara butt flaps are really a turn off for me.
Chugs are still far more superior on the 3rd party end. If hastak upped their game, I'd gladly pay 50-60 bucks on chugs if the went the robot spirit route, tons of accessories and lots of articulation, I've always thought that TFs would benefit from interchangeable hands using POM on ball pegs.
I am confused. The badcube one was $100, wasn't it? So it was worse and more expensive. Is the moral here not to upgrade or not to buy a 3rd party in case a MP one comes out later? Another interesting question is should I buy a $50 badcube or a $90 Takara right now.
The moral of the story here is to think critically. The offering coming up, is it a good enough bot for you to have in your ultimate collection, does the style of it fit in with the rest? IF the offering you found is decent, then wait for other alternatives until you can make up your mind and say; THAT bot is the most perfect design I can think of and THAT is the ultimate form i want to have in my collection for display. Remember; Impulse buying is your enemy! Until you get that feeling for a "toy" wait and save up your money for something else or save. Patience is a virtue and nobody but you cares if the item is the newest or if it has been around for a while. Just look at the price reduction for Feral Rex at the moment, for the same price i can get 2 of him now compared from when i first bought him 3 bots in to the final set. Or MP Prime, if you waited and didnt buy the Takrara version, you would have an animation colored Prime with life in his eyes, and if you waited a bit more it could be even cheaper by a KO company
My wife just looked over my shoulder to see what I was watching, and said "WTF are you watching?!?" Just realized the weirdness of a guy sitting in a nice dining room talking about transformers wearing a skull mask.... lol
She probably thought you were watching porn or a snuff video, lol!
@@2010thekingofkings snuff.
To me, Shockwave was the 1st bot were 3rd party beat out Takara. And their coneheads are not my cup of tea. So yeah, Takara isn't always "better".
ZetZatar I chose Quakewave over the official MP; he just looks so much more menacing, Will be keeping Sunsurge. The MP has some nice features, but the BC offering has some better aesthetics.
Word!
As Sunstreaker is my favorite, I'll have to get the MP version, but BadCube did such a great job with Sunsurge I could almost pass it up. I will definitely be keeping Sunsurge! Thanks for putting all those side by side shots together!
You know how every persons outside the US feels like when ordering something .
Preach, brother. When a $10 item has $60 in import fees....
It's just one more reason I tend to favor 3rd party over Takara.
this has turned into my favorite part on Saturdays. I know we won't get them every Saturday but I eggerly wait for the next one.
Great video Bobby...I'm really enjoying these Sitdown Saturday discussions! I've got Badcube Sunsurge and I'm happy with it, not enough of a change with the official imo. If collectors want to swap out or they passed on Badcube - more power to them!

I agree with Bobby. Im happy with my BC Sunsurge.
Would I rather support Takara? Yes.
But do I want to spend another 100 bucks on something that looks like what I have? No.

I'm still on the fence about MP36, looks awesome, but that price! Maybe my hypocrisy will know no bounds after all. Damn that plastic crack!
it's juuuuuuuuuuuust worth it to replace Sunsurge for me. YMMV. Great discussion, thanks BSF!
Love the discussion videos! I lucked out with this because I never got the sunsurge. MP-39 is an easy buy for me.
Couldn't agree more man. Ive already started down this road skipping mp megs as I still prefer despotron. really enjoying these discussion vids too btw, great job.
same here!
I've become careful. not buying cause of brand. thank goodness for options.

Best Sit Down Saturday yet. A+
I like these sit down Saturday videos, that being said, I know there were 3rd Party Sunstreakers, but hopefully the MP-39 Sunstreaker will be better in some ways than we previously seen with 3rd party. Hopefully will see a review of it soon, when it gets released into retail.

Reading my mind on this topic. Great third party products now.
Packin' the MAC in the back of the Acc!! Shout out to Cuban Link too! This makes your stuff the best Bobby.

lol. im doing a video on my chanel soon that is sort of what you talked about here. I feel the same as you. really good talk. very insightful.
Yo Yo Yo Yo damn Skullface you have a cup of joe or two LOL great energy you bring to the table and yea all in for MP Sunstreaker! Good Saturday to you.
Well done! I'm going mp because I just don't have this figure yet. 😊

Loving the Saturday Morning Discussions.
I went with backdraft (MMC) instead of mp inferno. I bought artfire for the mp mold. Overall have not regretted.
Thumbs up for the Big Pun references along.
Awesome discussion, keep em coming!
Great Video Man, try your best to keep them coming.
My question is, would the Takara Sunstreaker have looked as good if the Badcube one had never existed??
No doubt, if you DONT have BC SS, the Takara version is for you... If funds allow it...
I don't think so.

Thoughts?
I made my decision and bought Sunsurge. It is a fantastic toy. I really wanted to support such enthusiasm, while Takara lost a customer.
Nice work. Keep these coming.
*hears two big pun references* *smashes like button*
Great vid , completely get where your coming from with is it worth that price to swap out . Love the Saturday sit downs keep them coming
I feel like Takara being so focused on muh g1 accuracy means you end up with a bot 10% better looking than it's rivals at the expense of terrible Transformations and a very panel heavy design from every angle from the front.
great discussion!!
Smegal wants the precious!!!! we needs it
If I like the character enough, I'll keep all offerings. I don't mind having so many Megatrons. I have both DX9 & Fans Toys Galvatrons since they are priced like the eHobby reissues. I wish Fans Toys would release their FT-01 Acoustic Wave because one Masterpiece Soundwave isn't enough. I mean, how many Optimus Primes are out there?
keep them coming buddy!
The Takara and BadCube ones both look great, but I don't have either. RIP my wallet.
Thanks for the laugh that is so funny!
DAM YOU HIT NAIL ON THE HEAD IM THINKING THE SAME THING!!
Big Pun! Respect brother :)
So many Sunstreakers and not one a Headmaster? Seems if someone made one they could at least get the IDW crowd to buy a 3P Sunstreaker.
Man, can you imagine if MP-39 turns out to suck? All those people giving up their Sunsurges for it?
To bad I didn't sell sunsurge when he was going to $300 on eBay
r.i.p pun!
Got that Amazon Japan pre-order in, but if it stays $80+, that bad boy's getting cancelled.
RIP BIG PUN!!!!!
I think I'm sticking with my Takara MP-12T (Tiger-track) ! lol
I enjoyed this video.
For a completeness of MP series, you have to get MP-39..
if the collectors had any discipline they'd be patient for takaras release and never have to face the conundrum of swapping out... like me :) ..also bundle ship ems from Japan to save on shipping... again be patient do you really need mp whatever asap...
i feel your pain regarding having to make tough buying decisions, my savings quiver in fear every time maketoys release a new product for their cross dimensions line. i am considering becoming a male escort to subsidise the purchase of their new thunder erebus model.
hahahaha
I know that it's a small matter, but the faction logo is no longer consistent with my collection. I don't want half my Autobots having the animation design.
djhavok101 yeah, and stickers for the Lambo logos as well to go with it...great!
Ooo I know you don't respond but I am curious to that statement you made about 3P stuff not being replaced, which figures are those?
Does anyone know if MP Sunstreaker has the interchangeable hands that the vintage G1 figure did?
7:45 exactly how I feel about mp megatron replacing apollyon.
Other figures I may not sell off. Fanstoys hound and mmc mirage
lol Poor Spinout gets no love lol
Derivitiv Films I liked mine till he feel apart on me.
Also, Takara butt flaps are really a turn off for me.
... or you could wait for a KO ver that most likely come with rubber tires and added accessories for much much less😂
I would be down for Sunsurge if it wasn't for his feet sticking out to the sides so much...was there ever a mod/fix for this?
Chugs are still far more superior on the 3rd party end. If hastak upped their game, I'd gladly pay 50-60 bucks on chugs if the went the robot spirit route, tons of accessories and lots of articulation, I've always thought that TFs would benefit from interchangeable hands using POM on ball pegs.
I am confused. The badcube one was $100, wasn't it? So it was worse and more expensive. Is the moral here not to upgrade or not to buy a 3rd party in case a MP one comes out later? Another interesting question is should I buy a $50 badcube or a $90 Takara right now.
I am sure it's very good, but is it as good as MP39?
I wanted it pretty bad but I cant justify the ridiculous pricetag
i hear you
now we know
