    I started birth control at 12 years old for my PCOS. My doctors sent me to children’s hospital and I had months of testing first. It changed my life for the better. It blows my mind that doctors will prescribe birth control without a blood test first.

    the whole concept of purity culture is that if you have sex before marriage, you are somehow impure and less then. i think if you want to wait that is a wonderful option for those it resonates with but thinking or saying that someone is less then or not good because they didn't wait is wrong.

    Alternate perspective: hormonal birth control saved my life in a lot of ways. I wouldn’t be able to hold down a job or do the things I want to do without it because of the horrible periods I had. I agree that more screening and research needs to be done, as is the case with tampons etc. But I’m far healthier now living without periods than when I bled every month. Also, just the convenience of not bleeding is amazing. I hate the stigma attached to not having periods for reasons that are known because it cost me years of my life.

      Hormonal birth control can be like a bandaid though. The reason for horribly heavy or painful periods is usually related to hormonal imbalance. Instead of just covering up the problem, figuring out the reason for it is important. ✌️

    The birth control discussion is so nuanced and complicated. I totally understand and respect how many women don’t feel good on it and it’s just not a fit for them. On the other end of the spectrum, I have felt SO MUCH BETTER on bc since I started taking it several years ago. I always had really irregular periods before and I haven’t experienced any of the side effects from it, so I’m super convinced the hormones in it were what my body was lacking in balance. It’s crazy how many women online want me and others like me who feel better on bc to doubt that we actually feel better and think the bc is causing major damage behind the scenes (not saying you’re doing this, Christina, I’ve just seen it all over other places). We all should listen to our own bodies for what they need, be informed on the potential risks and benefits, and be empowered to make the right choice for us. I can appreciate that bc is not the right fit for some women, but we need to be careful not to demonize something that might be exactly what someone else needs. Going both ways!

    Totally agree with you Christina about asking questions and advocating for yourself! I had really painful, debilitating periods in middle school and high school. I was put on hormonal birth control for years to manage the symptoms. Eventually I decided to stop taking it, and at that time I was also receiving treatment for another health problem. That other health problem turned out to be the cause of my painful periods. Once that was treated, my painful periods went away, and I've been off hormonal birth control for years now. My periods are super regular and I only have mild symptoms every month. Feels great!

    For many people birth control is the only way to be able to live a normal life. It's obviously a personal choice, but being on it is not a bad thing if it regulates your cycle. It gave me my life back. I dread the day when I have to go back to my old life before bc. It was unliveable to be honest. Again, personal choice, but also do not let people tell you it is the wrong choice.

I am on the same page as you with birth control. Having a period as a woman is important to your health and I wish there was more education about it. @sofiacastanho7127 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      English is not my first language so Im not sure I understood correctly what you said. You mean the science behind not waiting for marriage? Well, for me, I am not religious at all, and I dont think marriage is sacred, it is just a contract so for me, all that was important was for me to be ready, have a loving and respectful partner.

    • @zaza7594
      @zaza7594 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @@sofiacastanho7127 she mentions that her decision to wait for mariage before engaging in sexual activities was backed up by science and I'm curious about those studies. I'm a bit skeptical but open to hearing it.
      To me sex isn't sacred and nor is marriage. I value my relationship and all it encompasses to the highest degree but I'm not sure I would call it sacred.

    • @sshaw32096
      @sshaw32096 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In my very unqualified opinion, I would think that, obviously, if you're not doing anything that can lead to getting pregnant, there won't be a chance of getting pregnant (when you don't want to be).
      No matter if you see marriage in a religious or sacred or whatever way, most people can agree it's a higher level of commitment, as well as usually a sort of legal binding. So like waiting until you're in that place with someone, at a point where you're willing to be, in a sense, connected to someone, you know that you're both "in it together". If you can make the commitment to that, a committment of a kid is less likely to have you running for the hills.
      And then maybe for like scientific science, it gives you time to find out if you're biologically compatible? I know they sometimes say your natural smells mix well with people's. Don't know if that's actually true, but if it is, it won't happen over night just like (most) people don't get married the next day?

    • @marymurn2201
      @marymurn2201 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Maybe I can help:)
      So I’ve actually taken classes on this, but I might not be perfect in definitions. Basically, having sex before marriage with multiple people, can cause physical pain, and you can suffer from sexual illnesses. Which can also be passed on to other people you have sex with. So saying you did something in your teen years, can actually lead to effecting your spouse. Waiting until marriage, scientifically speaking would be ideal, because you would avoid all of these illnesses. Hope that helps :)

    • @zaza7594
      @zaza7594 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@marymurn2201 that's a weird reason imo. First because sex ed teaches us to use condom, granted everyone makes mistakes and not everyone has access to (good) sex ed nor protection. In most of the developed world, sti can be treated (excluding the big awful ones like hiv and hepatitis for example, but I think most common sti are treatable. I'm fine with being explained I'm wrong here. Actually even hiv now has specific treatment so you can still have an active sex life).
      Sex can cause pain... In very specific situation and also with specific medical conditions. I doubt we're talking about a majority of people. Correct me if I'm wrong.
      Also here your argument doesn't work if you wait before marriage with the same person. Like ok maybe you want to find the one before doing anything, fair enough, but then what ? According to your argument you HAVE to get married to do anything then.
      And if pain can be caused by sex, being married will not change that sex is painful. It just delays the problem I think.
      I'm not convinced ;)

    I really appreciate and respect your need to have a reasoning behind your decisions because then they really are your fully educated decisions. I'm definitely feeling stronger and stronger that a lot of women's health topics need to be talked about more. So many people are going through the same thing and don't even know it. And everyone can use some extra support! Though I'm not on birth control and may never be, I know so many people who are and have been since they basically hit puberty but are now finding at 24/25/26 that there's other issues that were masked. My mom had horrible endometriosis and now a lot of my friends have similar symptoms and it makes me nervous for them. As with anything medical, it needs to be researched to ensure it really is the best option for the individual rather than be a generic fix.

    I COULD NOT insert a tampon from when I first started menstruating in my teens to when I was a young adult, but my problem was not my pelvic floor.
    I assumed I just didn't know how to do it right and left it at that. Then, towards the end of high school, I checked myself 'down there' and could not really see much of an opening. There were only two - very small - holes that I could see where my opening should have been. My hymen also looked much thicker than medical images I was able to find online.
    I brought this up with a doctor and she attempted a physical examination, but could not complete it because it was too painful. She dismissed me and just told me that sex would be excruciating for me!
    I was crushed. I felt like I was broken in a way that could not be repaired 💔
    It took me years to gather the courage to see another doctor about it, but I did go again as a young adult. That doctor attempted a physical examination as well, but unlike the first, she heard me and referred me to a gynaecologist.
    The gynaecologist I saw was wonderful. She could see that my hymen was far more intact than most people's, and scheduled me for a hymenectomy that she performed herself.
    During the surgery, she explained that they would check the rest of my anatomy for any other abnormalities. Luckily, the rest of me is normal 🙌🏻
    That surgery changed so much for me. I'm getting married in less than a year, and now I know that my wedding night will be beautiful instead of excruciating.
    Probably TMI, but I just wanted to share my story in case there's someone who has a similar issue. It's not that common, but it is worth checking. Also, trust yourself. It can be so discouraging to be dismissed about your health, and I'm lucky it only took me a couple of tries. Don't give up until you find someone who is willing to listen and help ❤️

    Thank you for speaking about this! I agree with your perspectives on these topics as well so was awesome to hear it. Super interested in this topic about hormones and birth control so really really enjoyed this video!! I had my period constantly for a full year every single day because of the hormones I felt I had to take because of societal pressure and was emotionally super unstable. Coming off them took about a year even after that to stabilise again and still required medication to help with all my symptoms for taking them. My doctor absolutely did not test my hormones before prescribing them and even after 8 months of constant bleeding told me to "just keep taking it". I am finally stabilised in my hormones and emotions and only bleed super gently for a couple days a month. What a blessing!

    👏 thank you for this video! Gosh I wish I had the platform you have… I’m so passionate about non hormonal birth control!! Marquette Method user for 3 years with 1 planned baby (that’s probably the machine method you were referring to)! Quick note- NFP and FAM are super close but not interchangeable terms because it’s understood that NFP methods use abstinence during fertile periods while most fertility awareness methods are more for charting for knowledge and allow for barriers during fertile periods.
    PLEASE A PODCAST ON THIS TOPIC! Im sure y’all will get some flack from the crowd that’s been told by their doctors that hormonal birth control “regulates their body”, but it’s 2022… and women deserve to know the alternatives to suppressing their ovulation every month. Love the courage it takes to talk about these things! 🙏

    So important. I have Graves Disease and for years I resisted hormonal birth control because I know that hormones are related to each other and affect each other. None of my doctors took me seriously when I would say that I had concerns about interactions with my autoimmune disease until finally I found an endocrinologist that supported and agreed with my decision to not take hormonal birth control because of my concerns. He told me that often times doctors have to specialize in certain areas to have information about things like hormone interactions because your average person doesn’t experience those concerns.

    I may have a helpful addition to the topic of irregular cycles for anyone who's interested in it: I first had my period at 12 years old and I am now 17 and I have never had a regular standard cycle. I've talked to a doctor about it and what I can say is that it is VERY normal to have an irregular cycle at least in the first two years after you first had your period. During that time, it can be annoying but people shouldn't be worried at all. After the two years, the first question my doctor asked me was if I was underweight or if I did tons (!) of sport. Since both weren't the case, she let me go for another year and said that I shouldn't worry (especially because my mom's cycle was also pretty irregular when she was younger). At about 16 years old I went to the doctor again (I was sooo afraid, but let me tell you it was not that bad and she didn't have to check me *down there* for my issues). She took my blood and sent it to a lab to gain information about my hormonal status and she asked me a few questions about my overall health. She was very nice and a good listener. After about a week, she called and told me that there was nothing wrong with my hormones and that I still should give my body more time to get balanced. Since I first had my period, I've had cycles from 23 to 98 days, but during the last year, I've noticed somewhat of a pattern at around 55-58 days. I know that this is still not a "normal" cycle, but every body is different and some bodies need a lot of time to find their rhythm. I will go back to my doctor though, if I don't see the pattern developing towards less days. All in all I can say that 28-35 days (which the question in the video was about) is not really irregular and as long as you are eating more or less healthy food, being active, but not torturing your body with sports, you should be fine. However, I would recommend seeing a doctor for irregularities after those two years. For me personally, the biggest problem that I have with it, is always being nervous and never knowing when I am having my period and that is something, I can deal with. (From what I have heard, you can also see a doctor and take the pill to regulate your cycle artificially but that definitely has its disadvantages as well and I wouldn't want to do that.)

    You should read the book “this is your brain on birth control” by Sarah hill- really outlines behavioral/physiological changes a woman can experience while on and coming off of birth control! Super informative and taught me so much that our education system never did.

    I just wanted to point out that a reason a tampon might hurt could be because you didn’t put it in right or far enough. One time, I needed something and I only had tampons (don’t normally wear them) and I put it in, got up, could feel it and it wasn’t comfortable. Took it out and put a different one in, pushed it further with a different angle and then got up and couldn’t feel it like previously.

    Thank you for this. I’m engaged and preparing for marriage this summer. Also a pediatric icu nurse, so advocating for my patient population is of utmost importance to me. I haven’t always been the best about prioritizing my own health. This video was the motivation I needed to learn more about my body, especially as I enter into married life…a practicing Catholic here too - I understand being in the minority ;). My fiancé and I both desire to start trying to have babies early on in marriage - God willing of course. Would love to see more content like this from someone with a similar view who’s a little older/ much wiser than me. :) We need more people like you advocating for women’s health and for the truth. Amen sister!👏🏼👏🏼 St. Gianna, pray for all of us!

    I'm so interested in NFP because messing with my hormones terrifies me. I'm abstaining till marriage and am single in my 20s. Would anyone be happy to share when they started being educated on how to NFP, like just after engagement, a few months before marriage, way before that etc. ?

    • @t.f.9378
      @t.f.9378 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I first learned about it like two years ago, when I was 14!

    • @Havvielover

      I learned NFP shortly after becoming engaged and use it in my marriage. We have successfully avoided pregnancy by using NFP for over a year! There are so many pros for me using NFP and I have learned so much about my body and am happy that I do not have to use anything unnatural in my body. To get started, I recommend taking an NFP quiz online to determine which method best suits your lifestyle (I am happy with Symptothermal- it is effective for me and free!) and then taking a one time class to learn it from a certified instructor. I wish I would have started tracking way before I was engaged so I would have been very familiar with my cycle. I have friends who started tracking while single and have learned so much about their bodies and even have been able to help regulate cycles and their fertility just because of tracking! Happy to answer any additional questions, I love talking about NFP!

    I think it’s cool to see you talk about grown adult things . I feel like the band has made y’all be super conservative , rightfully so, but it’s nice to see a different side to you as an adult woman and mother . It’s kinda like seeing another layer of you as a human, but as a woman . Glad young girls have you and your sisters to talk openly about these things :)

I think kath was probably talking about the cleareblue monitor that tests for estrogen and LH hormones. It’s mainly utilized in the Marquette method of nfp! ♥️

    I had a similar issue with my gyne prescribing a birth control that was actually worsening my problems. I’m 26 and had been seeing her since 12 but there were red flags over the years with her being dismissive. (I had excruciating lower abdominal pain at age 15 and my mom had to demand an ultrasound…3 days later I was in surgery to remove an egg-sized cyst INSIDE my ovary) I’d had enough and decided to take matters into my own hands and look for a new doctor. I found one in November of 2020 and she told me the birth control I was on was giving me too much estrogen and worsening my pain and spotting (I was spotting almost 24/7 for 2 years). WHO KNEW?!🙄 She also diagnosed me with adenomyosis (I likely also have endometriosis and PCOS - lots of genetic stuff for me). She put me on progestin only (synthetic progesterone, no estrogen) and it has worked miracles for me in the year+ that I’ve been taking it! I wish I had seen her sooner but I’m just grateful I did when I did.

    Thank you so much for saying that purity culture can be toxic. I have never understood how all that shame and only pressuring girls and not boys to stay pure can be a good thing. But, I think there is more to the thing about purity itself and I have actually found a lot of comfort in hearing people like you choosing to wait and being happy about it, because I have felt so stressed about being "late" and feeling forced to rush things when I don't want to. Now I feel much more comfortable in waiting, maybe not until marriage, but at least waiting a lot longer. However, I still think everybody should make their own choices and I don't think not waiting is any worse than waiting, it's just that waiting longer feels better for me personally. I think if you talk about your own personal reasons and don't go into why other people should do things a certain way (that's where I can see people get offended, maybe myself included), you shouldn't get that much backlash, at least I hope! Hearing other people's perspectives even if you do differently yourself can be so interesting too. And I wish you well with your pregnancy!!

  • @Wysniux12

    I myself can't relate to your choices, since I'm not religious and generally have different plans for myself, HOWEVER, I think you are being very respectful in the way that you express your opinions. I don't think you should feel bad doing it as long as you are being mindful and support others who choose different paths ♥

    As convenient and less awkward as it is (and even I did it), online birth control is terrifying. Some of them ask for your blood pressure, some just make you check off that it's not too high. I checked that box without actually checking. I held off for a long time but finally ended up on it for about a year. My husband thinks it effects my mood (I think I reacted to the way life has gone in the past couple years but that's beside the point) and we're at a point where we're willing to accept whatever comes (I think we both WANT it more than we're willing to tell each other but are also worried about finances, responsibility, childcare etc) I've been off for about 3 months and everything still isn't normal. I didn't gain weight from it but I gained coming off and I'm now about 20 pounds more than I ever have been.

    Really respect you Christina, but I think even referring to waiting until marriage as purity (which you did in this video) is in itself a little problematic - is not waiting till marriage impure then? I’m sure you aren’t saying people who don’t wait until marriage are impure (synonym for wrongful, immoral, depraved), but maybe just be aware of referring to waiting as purity? Take care!

    • @de5072
      @de5072 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      This!! This ideology is part of the purity culture she says she doesn't agree with. Purity culture is routed in religious beliefs.
      Yes there are scientific and emotional reasons to wait but it shouldn't be linked to being "pure" because none of us are "pure"

    If you have something like PCOS. Look into other things besides from just taking birth control pills, like changing what you eat. The pill might help temporarily while your on it. Most of the people I've talked to with issues like this have to find a new game plan on how to deal with it without BC. You can start while on BC.
