Can we just stop for one second and think of the value of this video?
    - there's one of the biggest names in car designing from the modern era, telling us how and when he knew he'd became a car designer.
    - then he analyze that car, showing that he's actually and clearly in love with it, kinda romantic moment.
    - after that we have him sketching the car which made him become who he became. Am I the only one overwhelmed by this? In 50-100 years the name Frank Stephenson will still be in car design books and today we actually watched him drawing the reason of that.
    - he actually improved one of the most beautiful cars ever made by human race.
    - last but not least at all, that freaking drawing is a work of art, the use colors, lights, shadows and everything is just amazing.
What can I say, thanks Frank Stephenson for this video, really.

Hi Frank, really loved your revised E-Type design, and the fact your rendering was drawn by hand. What a finished product! I wonder about the area right in front of the rear wheel, it looks a bit buldge-y and the fender kicks down, whereas the original cuts a clean line and the line kicks up (albeit it's more vertical). Overall, it's a sensational reinterpretation!
In my dream garage I'd also put the car that sparked my love for cars: the Lamborghini Diablo (early one w/out spoiler if possible). I stared at photos of the car as a child and I still think it's the best-looking wedge-shape supercar ever made. Thanks!

From the older cars, I always liked the Ferrari F40 (had a model of that), also the 356 Speedster version was pretty cool (I liked it better than normal 356, it looks slimmer and sleeker), and for today I would love to have Lamborghini (Centenario, Huracan or Aventador). Hi Frank, Frank here. We did a 68 XKE S 1.5 2+2 rescue... recently. The car was a dog coupe in our patrons back yard. One night back in 1978, my dad convinced him to sell the Jag for $800 bucks. Not only was it a dog coupe, it was a dogs breakfast as the prior owner had driven it into the wall at POCONO RACEWAY. We have been working on it since 1978 and $50,000 later, here it is. After seeing all of your mods, I agree with them all. But perhaps the window rake would not allow for a full roll cage, as we have. Headroom is pretty tight with a helmet on. My favorite mod is our rear quarters. When your making 800+ HP, you need wide tires. We call her the HAF JAG, half Chevy, half Jaguar. 383 SBC stroked and a 2 speed power glide handles the trubocharged monster. Its wrapped now, but will be getting a base clearcoat red over the winter. All of the work is done in house, except for the machine work on the motor. Maybe someday I will do the hood and light modifications, as my hood is fiberglass and we have already widened the front wheel openings. Its a blast to drive. It was almost crushed, yet its reincarnation is quite the labor of love....ongoing!! Ciao, and check out my You Tube video on the project someday and say Hi! FrankScavo1486 on you tube

Hard to put into words what this 'discovery' means, although Tex Willer did a great job. I also was mesmerised when I saw the E-Type for the first time and often thought what the designer of the new mini would have achieved if in charge of its successor. We still don't know but it wouldn't have been the XJS (I hope) I also wondered which idiot got rid of the boomerang lights, now I know 😉. To get soo many answers in such a short time is a miracle. And meeting Frank, thank you Harry, is a privilege and a pleasure. But looking again at the Mini anybody else thinks it looks a bit like a shrunken E-Type after seeing this video? The bonnet, the headlights, the chrome surround, the doors, the starter button, the split grill.....maybe that's why I and so many other people are mesmerised by it.

  • @rage12345678
    @rage12345678 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

I'd like to share a story. I left Russia for New York City when I was 7 years old. The E-Type was the first proper toy car I ever laid my eyes on when I was a kid. It is directly responsible for my obsession with cars (and Jaguars) today. When we moved, I somehow lost that car. But I always remembered what it looked like. 25 years passed, I thought to myself "I wonder if I can find it on eBay?" And sure enough, I did! It was a diecast made by a British company called Corgi Toys. I bought 2 of them, both in the same yellow I had when I was a child. I keep one in its box, and the other I let my 4 year old son play with.
Interestingly enough, I have always agreed with Frank about the coupe's greenhouse being too upright and needing a bit more rake. All of the other things he fixed are also welcome, especially cleaning up the indicators on the front bumper. The convertible E-Type is definitely my preferred look, but the coupe is still an absolute icon.

One of my favorite moments in university in the late 1980's, studying Industrial Design under a prof, Jacques Ostiguey (a retired car designer, also RIP) was when he did exactly this exercise: a modern update to the E-Type. Jacques was on contract to do some ideation for Mazda for the never-realized Amati luxury line and was drawing inspiration from old Jags. He always drew a crowd around him whenever he asked to borrow someone's drawing pad, effortlessly sketching beautiful cars in seconds, humbly reminding us that drawing is a language and the ability to communicate with drawing "is all in the mileage". Sadly, even though I kept some of the wonderful sketches he drew in that E-type redesign session, I'm afraid that they were lost when a few boxes never made the move one year. Your sketching lesson here brought me back to that afternoon and reminds me that we bring with us the talent and ideas of those who inspire us - from Sir William Lyons onwards. So cool.

The E-Type is at the top of the list, along with the P-51 mustang, a 1970's Alpine A110, 1973 Porsche 911 and The USS Enterprise from Star Trek the Motion Picture (1979). Came here from Harry's Garage. Love these redesign videos! I feel tingly all over, they're like ASMR for car design nerds, or some sort of new therapy. Just wonderful. Really like the detail changes to what I think is the most beautiful care ever to start with. I do think the strange shape of the original headlights adds so much character, and the enhancing of the front wings might be too much, even though it is so subtle. Really like the cleaning up of the sides, and the sleekening of the glass house is great. I do like the upright nature of the original though as it gives such a strong contrast to the rest of the car. Would have to see this in the clay though. It does look gorgeous.
The time lapse sketching scenes are just magical btw, the music, the cigar.....

  • @jpkdesignz

I would pick the classic *Honda NSX* with the pop-up headlights. Preferably in a dark green. I think it shares some features with the Jaguar E-Type in how sleek it is designed and how every line seems to follow the same design philosophy giving it its unique and sporty shape. I think the uninterrupted taillights with the seamless transition to the wing is a testament of this very design philosophy. It also oozes the atmosphere and style of a bygone era which it is perhaps the epitome of, again, much like the E-Type for his decade.
The fact that it is so adaptable and exists in so many variations and modification but always remains this shape is absolutely legendary.

Frank, I love this new show. A couple thoughts on the E-type re-design. We own a series 1 FHC, and like you, I've been a massive fan since early childhood. I personally like that the car has a few flaws. It's the Uma Thurman of automotive design, and all the better for it. Those chrome strips on the front fender seams are a bit of jewelry. They also play up the three-part bonnet manufacturing process, rather than try to hide it. It's honest, and a bit of a quirk.
Those hood louvers are another feature I would not change. Your comment about the E-type as a collection of geometric forms would include the rectangular hood vents. If they become more stylized, I believe they become a bit too self-aware. There is a practical charm about them, drawing a connection to the racing heritage.
Another detail I would not change is the front bumper. It was an interesting exercise, making it span across the oval air intake. My thoughts are this - that oval intake is a beautiful form, giving the car a bit of a sensual mouth. It's kind of a sexy feature. When the bumper goes full-width, the mouth looks like it now has braces.
I do like the rake you added to the A-pillar. I've felt this way for some time - it looks way too upright. It only needs to go back a few degrees to look correct.
Thanks for the thoughtful and amazing design session!

The bonus of updating a design is you know there are now far more advanced production techniques, the windscreen being one, incorporating lights into bumpers being another.
It also needs to be remembered that even though the E type was expensive and out of reach of most in the 60s, being a Jaguar and not an Aston meant it still had to be built to a price. Welding and sanding the bonnet panels would be great, but it adds costs, fine for Aston, not for Jaguar.

I, too, fell in love with the shape of my 1964 Jaguar e-type FHC. I also fell in love with one of Frank's designs: the McLaren 675LT. And many more, but I don't have all the cars I would like. Wow, Frank, I love what you're doing.
Now, on the issue of shape, I agree with your changes completely. One additional thing I don't like in the e-type is that the wheels don't fill the arches. A lot of the things you mention were corrected: on the Low Drag. What a design! I would love you to comment on the two in existence, the Lindner Nocker and the 49 FXN The latter is my own favorite. Absolutely!... I had a black Alfa GT with jet fan wheels and that was beautiful... apart from the headlights! Always thought it lacked in that department. Also had a Rover 75 dark green which was always a pleasure to look at and preferred it to the Jag S type which used to be on my wishlist.

Love all the tweaks to what I would consider one of my favorite cars ever created. I will say I’ve always kind of loved that uncharacteristic egg shape that the headlights have. If I had to change one thing about them, it would be to clean up the chrome trim around them. It comes off as a little bulky and I think a nice, thin, flat, clean line of chrome would only add to the elegance that an E-type exudes.

Yep, considering the Zonda design had its debut prior to year 2000, it's an incredibly visionary idea for any vehicle at the time, let alone a production road car. Not really anything remotely close to it at its time, even today it still holds up against the latest crop of super- and hypercars.

Even though I tend not to comment, I have, since I've known you, being delighted by the ease, the passion as well as the expertise you share in every video. In this case, it was a little bit different, the Jaguar E-Type Series 1 is one of my favorite automobiles, just behind the very particular Ferrari 250 Testarossa from 1957 (from which I hope you'll do a video someday, if possible) so, as you have already imagined, observing how one of your inspiring designers from all time, talking and touching the swiping lines and feels with such love and character, it is just invaluable as well as unbelievable. Having said the above, I truly hope meeting you someday, it will be an honor and such a wonderful opportunity, Mr. Frank Stephenson.

Softening the front seems to go in the direction of the 1965 Ferrari 275 GTB. From a practical standpoint E-types ran hot in warm climates needing the larger “mouth”. The coupes needed the front glass height for acceptable vision out. It’s amazing how the faster you drive the more the glass area seems to shrink. It’s an honor to opine in a forum with a distinguished designer!

@Frank Stephenson - I absolutely love the original FHC E-Type, and all its quirky, imperfect lines & design elements. So much so, I looked at 2 that I felt sure I would buy, but ultimately common sense told me they were going to be a money pit I couldn't afford. So... I went down the Porsche road and still have 2 of 4 I have been blessed with being their caretaker.
This rendering is superb, the best from the best. Would I want it to have been the original E-Type FHC? No. I fell in love with what Malcolm Sayer presented to the world. Imperfect perfection. So, money no object, it would be in my 5 car garage.... and right alongside would be your beautiful interpretation. A more streamlined, more modern & sexy evolution of the most gorgeous car ever created. (IMHO)
Watching & listening to your channel is a privilege and a pleasure. Thanks for sharing.

I think that you've streamlined the car and perfected it, but in doing so you removed a pleasing sense of tension and anticipation from the car.
Specifically, it was only once you removed the spaces around the wheels did I realize that those spaces were part of a whole element to the body that in effect presents the visceral potential energy seen in an ocean wave as it just starts to crest over from a mound to the curl that eventually wallops anything dumb enough to remain in its path.
This, I just realize in writing this comment, is the essence of good Jaguar design, where the force and power are evident, but captured in the instance just before the beautiful jungle cat switches on instinct and becomes a predator.
So somehow, the iconic design's geometrically imperfect headlight shape is necessary; it's as if the headlights are connected by fishing line to the same force that pulled the clamshell and haunches back to produce that space behind the wheels.
And perhaps fishing line is too crude to describe such an organic effect--it's as if the body of the car has the musculature of a face that's pulled back into a grin (or a beautiful snarl, depending on your taste).
I can see why you did what you did, after all you have the knowledge and experience to notice details that others don't, and the imagination and wherewithal to modify or correct them as you see fit. You can do for a design what someone with mild OCD does to barely cluttered desk: set things just right.
Anyway, that's just my take. I have no experience in automobile design, for what it's worth

  • @daverobert6761

Love the video. Like you I can remember the first time I saw an E-Type: it was displayed in a large department store in Birmingham, England, on the first floor at the top of the escalator so as you came up, this "space ship" was slowly revealed - an incredible sight, seemingly from another time.
I like the tumble-home, increased rake of the windscreen, dispensing with the chrome between the bonnet and fender, treatment of the front bumper and lights, but I prefer the original door treatment at the base of the A-pillar (the door opening now looks a bit small to my eyes) but I see why you've done it your way, and the rear wheel arch - it looks a little heavy between the arch and the door opening.
But I don't think you need to worry too much about your ability to render a car.
    Cheers

I must begin by saying that ONE of the things I like most about you and your videos is that you are not afraid to teach and be honest. You literally offer up a cornucopia of designer’s nomenclature for your viewers also.
I totally relate to the emotional impact the XKE had on you even at the tender age of nine. Being 10 years older than you I can only add one other reaction to the ones you mentioned, is a LUST!!!!
My best high school friend would own a black E coupe just two years later. He had by then destroyed/totaled two family cars with his speeding. I told him if he wrecked the E I would personally come and strangle him.
I watch every one of your videos.
Honestly though, some designs should never be ‘improved’
I say that based upon what I call the ‘Sophia’ principle. As a teenager I remember reading an article regarding Sophia Loren’s beauty. By classic definition the writer pointed out all of Sophia’s ‘flaws’...lips too full...eyes too far apart....nose too large....chin too pointed...yet he concluded when everything was put together, her beauty was unmatched. Streisand was viewed the same way a few years later.
When the Avanti debuted, I went crazy. Even had a conversation with Tom Kellogg, Raymond Loewy’s lead designer on the project.
Yet when he ‘upgraded’ the design, his OWN design, in the late 90’s, his or someone else’s C pillar change threw everything off kilter.
I realize my ‘opinion’ is rather ‘blunt’, especially never having been a formal automotive designer. I just feel having drawn and designed cars since I was 10, I am not unskilled. I love the process.
Thank you for hearing me out and let me repeat, I have high regard for your work and how you communicate it. Wayne

Terrific video, Frank. I love that you boldly decided to redo one of the greatest designs in automotive history. The car that Enzo himself said was the "most beautiful" he "ever saw"!
So many of us on here have been drawing cars since childhood, and I for one find it amazing that, through social media, we can get a healthy dose of your perspective as a career automotive designer. The lingo you use while explaining the origin of some of these elements really enriches the experience and unlocks many speculated-upon secrets as to why certain designs are handled in a specific way.
I certainly look forward to seeing more of these in the future.

Wow, Frank, honestly the redesigned E-type makes a lot of sense, getting rid of the sharp lines that hurt the eye was definitely a great idea! Loving how you rendered this car after 3 years, is absilutely stunning. Thank you for being on TH-cam and sharing with the next generation your knowledge and the way you look at the world. It definitely helped me I'm doing some card designs but I mainly do UI/UX work and I develop then what I've came up with. I've learnt a lot from you how design blends into engineering and can totally relate to the point that engineers try to bend the designs so it is faster/cheaper to build. I always like the challenge and build the craziest UI/UX that is out there.

Hello Mr. Stephenson. As a Series 1 E-Type FHC owner of nearly 50 yrs. I was quite interested with your thoughts on how to improve it's stunning lines and design. Your video and renderings are excellent. You do know your craft.
Yes, the windshield angle needs to be angled back few degrees more that also reshapes the door window so it does not look like it came from a Jag sedan. Yes, the roof side(s) drip rail should have been continued completely down and around the rear quarter windows to encapsulate the rear quarter window.
Yes, cleaning up the "busy" front turn signals and incorporating them into the flowing lines of the front bumper is a excellent idea visually. Yes, continuing the hood sides back to the door line looses one body line vertical break that works well.
I have to break with your thoughts on the front of the E-Type though. I submit that the original hood on the E-type is already pushing the boundaries of it's length vs the passenger compartment size ratio, yet you choose to extend the nose even further out front. To me, this visually imbalances the car.
I disagree that a perfect symmetrical oval slice headlight opening is appropriate for the E-type. Yes, many (most?) other car designers have done this for generations for the same reasons as you articulate, but time has had it's way with this headlight opening and it stands alone remarkably well. It is unique and serves the E well.
As far as chrome plating the "sugar scoop" baffle just behind the headlight opening glass, I think this is a mistake as I consider even painting them all silver as Jaguar did, a mistake. I think the sugar scoop should be the same color as the body so as not draw the eye to it. My sense is the more things blend, the less they distract from such incredible flowing lines of the E hood.
Your changes to the E have it visually heavier, so it looses some of the light elegant lines like pro athlete in their 20's vs the same athlete in their late 30's.....some 20--30 lbs heavier. Both are stunning, but the E should remain in it's 20's forever.
in conclusion as I look at your renderings I suddenly realized what you have done to the E is bring the flavors of the Viper GTS to the E. The Viper STS windshield and roof line are similar to what you propose. The GTS has a visual bend at the base of the windshield and there is a bit of this in your revised E.
Thank you for doing this video. It was such a pleasure to sit with you and see you work your design magic.

I do like the new format and I am a great admirer of Frank’s work. I know many a person, not just young lads who would adore one of his design sketches or finished works which are simply stunning and I’d go to a gallery to see those alone.
