  • Funcom's The Longest Journey was among the last popular point-and-click adventure games of its era, and it set the tone for the dialogue-heavy action-adventure and role-playing games that would rise to popularity in the mid-2000s.

Great choice of game to make a video on! Far too few people have experienced this game, and its sequels.

I was one of those who didn't play the game back when it was released, mainly due to not being a PC player back then, and not really having proper english communication skills. When I played it last year, I enjoyed, despite needing the HD patches for cutscenes and models after becoming used to modern graphics. Still, for all it's flaws and age, I think this game is a underrated gem. I really enjoyed it in the end.

I found this game to be truly immersive the first time I played it back in the day. I even went through it in a single sitting during the weekend. Fully absorbed by the world and storytelling.
Though I don't think the puzzles hold up when you compare them to older classics in the genre. Most of them are obvious and don't offer much enjoyment. I usually say that a good point & click game should make you feel the need to have a notebook at the ready.
Nice to see that you included the single puzzle I had some trouble with, the rubber duck one, as an example in this video.

I have been a big fan of this series for a long time now, it really is a sad thing to see how many people dont see how good this game is! It reallly could need a remaster or remake to make it enjoyable to other gamers.

It has been at least 15 years since I played The Longest Journey but it, together with Dreamfall: The Longest Jouney, is one of the best and most beautiful games I ever played. If you read this and never played it then I really recommend giving it a try.

Sadly, the US adventure game market of the '90s was so thoroughly dominated by Sierra and LucasArts, almost no American ever bothered to play anything by European developers, such as Cryo Interactive or Revolution Software. But these games, as well as TLJ itself, were huge in Europe. This one in particular was one of the most well received full Polish dubs for a game and the publisher was 100% ready to do the same for Dreamfall Chapters (even the actress for Zoe said she was ready to jump back into the role), but Red Threads made it impossible by rendering the game episodic. Fans were pissed.

It's fucking scary that I played through this game to the end as a kid and now have almost no recollection of it - even most of the random clips interspersed throughout this video seem alien to me.
Still, I remember the feeling of playing it, and it was great!

One of the best click adventure game, crazy amount of dialogues for a game at that time. Very archaic puzzles though. I didn't know there is a hidef mod.

@@computergamingyesterdayCan u tell me game name? Game plot is like this: the girl has two laser guns. When game starts, a girl enter a room, a demon tries to stab her from backside with a trident. The demons were get killed by girl in the game, but they reappear on same place after some seconds. On the way she finds a hall having access to three rooms. The middle one is fire room. If she goes, she dies. She either had to choose left or right one. The right one was difficult. So I chooses left one. There were laser rods coming and going on the foot steps. After coming down she finds a demon, kills it and move further. Next there is a moving robot, that robot is like round sweeping machines . I can't kill it. It tries to give electric shock to me. If I fire, it goes in a hall and charges itself again and attack me. I had to move next room where I don't find anyone but someone kills me.
      It's a game around year 2000

I played it as a kid and found it very good game and forward thinking for its mature and complex narative.
I really enjoyed solving the puzzles and the calm yet investigative attitude of the protagonist was a high point to keep me going.
Its a thinking man/woman game you feel great if you solve all on your one. Kudos for Funcom!

Dreamfall: The Longest Journey and Dreamfall: Chapters are two games that I loved very much when I played them originally but I never played the The Longest Journey.
This year I finally decided to give it a shot and tonight I finished TLJ for the first time in my life. And now I can definitely see why this game is considered the best adventure game of all time by some people. Visually the character models aged poorly, but the background, the voice acting and the story itself are so immersive and memorable. I had Clive Barker's Imajica vibes playing through story, of course without dark themes that Clive Barker is known for. There are dark themes in TLJ too, but not on Barker level.
TLJ is one of those games where I am not sure if I finished the game or if the game finished me now that I am done. Will have go through various TH-cam videos (that's how I stumbled here) to watch easter eggs, retrospectives and such.
I also learned that there was supposed to be a direct sequel that bridges the gap between TLJ and Dreamfall: TLJ called The Longest Journey Home but based on a Twitter post from the creator in 2016 it'll likely never happen. And that makes me very sad.
I played the game in its entirety on ScummVM cause I wanted that authentic experience. Steam lacks the fonts directory and has a white popup issue when you want to quit the game. The beta branch fixes the white popup issue but I still wanted to use ScummVM. Had to use a walkthrough only once. I was afraid the game would be full of moon logic puzzles, but surprisingly I don't think there were any. Even the one time I had to use a guide was simply because I didn't figure out I needed to get an item from the police station. Everything else was either logical to me or simply solved through a brief trial and error method.
Also tried the HD mod but I quickly uninstalled it. As I said the character models aged poorly and mostly look very blurry. But the HD mod, in my opinion, just makes things worse. It's like all character models went through the Photoshop's "Sharpen" tool over and over and over again. And the end result is just... wrong.... to my eyes.

Let me just save you time and say Dreamfall is OK but don’t be surprised at the cliff hanger. It’s pretty wild that they put a completely unnecessary cliffhanger in the end of game 2 that never really gets resolved in the third game.
Game 3’s gameplay is OK but the story is abysmal. Players found certain story ideas to just make no sense.

I feel like the two Dreamfall sequels had rather questionable lore additions. And the ending of Dreamfall Chapters fell kinda flat.

Yes! This! The first game was solid but the second two lack something that made TLJ great. I enjoyed the addition of Crow but it wasn’t enough to get me to enjoy Chapters. Glad I played Dreamfall before social media though. I was able to immerse myself in that mess without distractions 😂. That’s how you know it wasn’t a very good game.

I disagree that the game's only organised religion is greedy and corrupt.
They even make the frankly weird choice of having the catholic priest being one of the least corrupt people in the game.
Otherwise, I liked your review. This is probably my favourite game of all time, but it's not without flaws.
If I were you, I wouldn't really bother with the sequels. They're not good. If You're really into the first game, it's interesting to return to old locations during the second game and see what happened to them but apart from that the games are honestly boring. Gameplay's awful, writing is in some ways better but in most ways worse.
You can sort of feel the years between the games. You can tell that the writer(s) stopped caring so much about the story as laid out in the first game. They grew older, started caring about other things and, as a result, they had other, different stories to tell. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but evidently they had to shoehorn them into the world and story they'd already established. That's the impression I got, anyway. Plot threads are dropped by the handful. Themes, worldbuilding and established fact are bulldozed. If you ever wondered what happened next to a certain character, it's probably something depressing.
The third game especially was a slog. There's barely any of the people or places I cared about left. I think I even stopped playing it before it fnished. For the sequel to genuinely one of my favourite games, this took a lot of doing.
The series as a whole comes across as an exquisite corpse. A whole chopped into thirds, with the author of each third seperate from and indifferent to the intentions of the previous. I relate it most to Twin Peaks' third season.
Anyway, I'm sorry for the perhaps overlong comment but I reckon anyone who cares enough to make a whole-ass youtube video about a game might care about it as much as I do and be interested in hearing what I have to say.
What are we doing here if not searching for others who share our passions?
