  • Unboxing and overview of my new Andre Thorburn L36M, a truly epic build featuring a Damacore blade, CuBrZr Zircume bolsters and backspacer, and 24 karat gold leaf shred CF. This is an absolutely epic build and I am deeply humbled to own it. Andre is a wonderful maker, as well as an excellent human. Much thanks to him and his wife, Marietjie!

    Andre is my favorite maker right now. Stunning action and detail, so far haven't picked one up that I didn't want to buy! Bought a L28 at the New Jersey Custom show in November. His wife also does amazing texturing work to make so many unique combos.

    WOW!! Spectacular work of art! Can’t get enough of your collection Doc. Thanks for all of the great videos. I get a lot of enjoyment from them. I just picked up the WE Drakon an it’s awesome! You got me into integral handle knives an been dying for one. I can only afford a production one so far but it’s beautiful! The dragon scales on the handle is really cool. If anyone’s checking Doc’s videos out for the first time watch more. They get better an better!!

    Your custom collection is getting scary good. I get the chills from some of the knives I see ... looking at you Koenig Arius... 👀😳😱🤤🤤🤤. The amount of knowledge that you add to each video is amazing. Very well spoken and well presented videos about the higher end knives - you are the custom king. I have never ordered a custom but this year will be my first year and I plan to get a grail knife for myself to celebrate my hard work in real estate and I think that I learn more from your videos than going to a shop where the salesman typically has no idea what he’s showing me and sometimes doesn’t even know the name of the knife or company 🙄. That Koenig is gorgeous and speaks to me with sounds of music. Copper / bronze marbled CF is absolutely breathtaking. Keep it up buddy!!!!!

    I've had quite a few Thorburns, Van Herdeens and A2's (their combined company) and their fit and finish and action are top tier. Every knife was under 0.015 so they cut very well, every seam and joint was tight and smooth. Their hand rubbed satins are so buttery smooth and perfectly done and they have the best flipper tabs and jimping imo. I've kept a Thorburn L44 and A2 A1 front flipper (best front flipper and best flipper tab location imo) and use them for edc quite often.
    And I agree on the sound, especially on his bolstered knives. My L44 has hand carved steel bolsters and since they're denser than titanium and carbon fiber they echo the sound completely differently than other knives I've experienced. Only thing close is my Alan Kritzman custom with zircuti bolsters.

    Well played, Dr, well played;) just looking at your collection close up is fascinating, and I love the fact that you research in depth the latest materials available, so that you are constantly pushing the boundaries of what can be done when you put them all together in just the right way. The 'Arius' is a knife that I instantly fell in love with- and I think mainly it was the design of the knife more than the materials used, but totally the opposite was true of your particular 'Shamwari'. I don't mean I didn't like it- nope- fell in love again😅, but I think it was the materials used in yours that I instantly connected with, mainly that busy, gorgeous handle in combination with the almost completely sterile blade. The blade is stunning with that mirror/hand rubbed finish, and made all the more stunning by it having no bill boarding on it- a sin that I really think too many makers still commit. Looking forward to following your future collections with envy😏. Great videos, sir- keep em coming

    One of the best (if not the best) knives you’ve shown! I would ask Andre if he could remove the IKBS logo from the blade. It’s too commercial looking, and doesn’t add anything. As a working fine artist, I would leave any such modification to the maker. Thanks for sharing!

    The black/gold theme is slow and insidious. But it has slowly pushed the green knives out of the nest and taken over. Blue goes better with gold anyway. Those new copper/bronze scales are stunning - it's hard to believe how far CF has come in just a year, not to mention blade steels! This is a *stunning Thorburn,* That mirrored flat! [sigh] Something a lot of people never check is how centered/symmetric the core is - and the potential issues it can cause if you actually use your knife - not to mention aesthetics. I can never decide what sort of bolster I want when it comes to his work! SA makers are still a bargain it seems. I gotta grab me a Thorburn, somewhere in there with Thys, Herucus, JD...

    I had NO IDEA zirconium could chemically combine in the making of mokume!!! Lighter, but not really interesting look. It can be anodized like Titanium and aluminium: is that the appeal? If so an uber low layer; crazy pattern zirconium included mokume could make the cat's meow of knife furniture!

    Beautiful knife. But I am not sure about its value. Andre is selling semi-custom knifes with the identical fit, finish and quality for $900-$1,500. The materials he is using in your knife, while beautiful, do not merit another $2,000 he is charging. There is no engraving or precious stones or inlays. The same filing and anodization he does in his $900 knifes. And the bolsters and scales, while beautiful, are not unique or inherently valuable. I am just asking, where is the additional value between Andre’s $900 knife and his $2,800 - $3,000 knife like yours? It isn’t in the bolsters, scales or file work or his other knifes would be much more expensive.

    • @ssunfish
      @ssunfish 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The extra expense doesn't translate into inherent value that YOU could capture. So it's meaningless to you. Leave it at that. So many makers deal with micro managers that love intellectual exercises about cost, work and end market value equations. Smdh: fuvk it! Would you want to do something super personal and takes all your skills for a bean counter? You shrink your own world by this behavior.

      I too dont understand why 2000 upcharge when as i understand it frunkey bought his own material for use. So working with the high end materials caused 2000 extra?
