I just got one this year and it's life changing. I want to install one at my work (if I ever go back into the office). I want to go around and install them in random public restrooms like a bidet vigilante. Seriously they're amazing and you should get one.

They are cheap like $30 and can just be simply added in line, it pays for itself in a few months of expensive toilet paper. I recommend making sure to get the strong stuff though because it's better for patting yourself dry than others that fall apart.

  • @marshmallowdiptaco

Actually, while toilet paper is not recycled or recyclable, it is biodegradable based on the simple fact that it's made from organic matter and when disposed of in septic systems, it is processed into biosolids. I used to work at a wastewater treatment plant, so I'm all too familiar with the process.
Also, there are many manufacturers, especially in the US, that offer eco-friendly TP and alternatives.
All in all, thank you Seth and team for spotlighting this issue...and for providing easy jackal bait 😁🐾

None of that changes the fact that bath tissue takes a lot of water to make and fresh water is a pretty limited resource. Importantly it’s more efficient to maintain water pressure in pipes than to transport pallets of paper in trucks (a medium size grocery store will go through about a pallet or more of paper products per day, before offices were closed). And the less paper we use, the fewer trees that need to be cut, which is one of a limited number of usable carbon capture methods available today. Biodegrading paper still releases CO2-and methane in septic tanks and sludge ponds-during the breakdown process.

for you westerners wanting to get a bidet but can't afford a bidet toilet, do what we asians do:
get a mini sprayer with a thumb lever and a short hose, attach the hose with a T connector to the water intake at the bottom of the tank. voila!
caution: watch out for the cold winter water for those living in cold regions

    • @danielalbertcastillo3713

Might I add: where I am, the sprayer this commenter is talking about is what we call the bidet. I have yet to see an actual bidet toilet, but we are seeing more and more of these sprayers.

a bidet toilet in the old days was a separate toilet installed next to the regular toilet. it looks like a regular sitting toilet but has no water tank. there's a faucet situated directly under you that shoots water straight up with the cold/hot water knob in the back.
but the modern bidet toilet is a regular toilet with a hidden squirter in the back and under the seat. there's a knob on the side of the seat that when you turn it on, the squirter emerges and shoots water. that's the standard bidet toilet. a lot of malls in my country already have these installed in their bathrooms. but for most people in their homes use the homemade version i mentioned earlier.
the fancy bidet toilet comes with a control panel. you can control the water temperature, turn on the seat heater, etc.

Sadly personal decisions have a negligible impact on climate change :( not to say don’t do it! It’s just important to note that the American perspective that it’s “all of our jobs to reduce our own carbon footprint” etc was almost entirely driven by advertising campaigns funded by fossil fuel companies starting in the 80’s and 90’s. The podcasts “Drilled” and “how to save a planet” have some excellent coverage of this stuff!

200 years? They've got growing pine trees to full size down to like 24 years last time I took notice, that some quick carbon capture, and water use doesn't matter in the countries that grow these trees. Take New Zealand, a TP producer, an estimated 500 trillion litres fall on NZ in a year, that's 1 million litres per New Zealander. Plus NZ is +80% renewable electricity generation from mostly hydro but also wind and a lot of solar is coming online in the next 2 or 3 years. If we use less TP don't we stop needing fast growing trees, meaning that form of carbon removal from the atmosphere gets less. Soon the equipment for felling and transporting those trees is going hydrogen fuelled too, so the whole industry is or would be carbon negative, pulling more carbon out than it puts in.

Most US homes do not have warm water at the throne, hence bidet will be pain in the wrong place on cold days. An alternative would be to have adapter connect it to the Diverter Spout. Else arrange a hotwater pipe. Other bit is if you have hotwater then select the mixer type bidet, those are there in the market.
The jet type that can be connected to the seat can also be uses as natural anemia to keep colon clean and increase you overall health. Please ensure you control the water jet pressure in such use.

If we are strictly talking about the environment: What's the impact of actually manufacturing the bidet? How much toilet paper do you need to save to tie even?

Japanese bidets are not bidets. Italian bidets are the way to go. And use soap for gods sake.

I just moved into our new apartment. (We live in the EU.) And wow! A second toilet in the shower room?! Everyone laughed at my faux pas, and told me it wasn't a toilet, nor a water fountain for the dog. It was, they said, a beh-dit. All this time I assumed they were called b'day. Like in Austalia when they say g'day, but nope! It is pronounced bih-Dit. There's your correction for the week Seth.
