  • Hey hey people, Raz here. Since the MOC Tour video is shaping up to be the longest video I've ever done, I wanted to take a quick second to talk about something else that was near and dear to my channel, and decided to go over the history and my opinion of 1/28 and 1/35 scale. Now I know this is likely going to be a controversial video since it expresses an opinion and opinions are frowned upon on the internet. Just remember, I'm a grown a$$ man who plays with Legos, you don't need to make fun of me because my life is already a joke. More content to come. Thank you for watching.

As someone who buys sets from a variety of brands, I totally agree the quality of the model is more important than the scale. While not optimal, I'd rather have a mix of good quality models than mediocre to bad models at the same scale. I can't say that I like how my Tiger I is significantly larger than my Tiger II from a different brand, but I chose the models of each vehicle that I liked best, and that's what matters most to me.
In the year or so since this video has released, cobi has leaned a lot more into 1:35 scale, especially with the "company of heros" line. While some of the sets have very nice builds and are plenty stable, I've had trouble justifying the prices of these vehicles over their older and larger builds. A lot of the older and larger models are the same price or cheaper than their newer and smaller counterparts, and I think this is largely due to the increased cost of using many smaller pieces in the newer sets.
It's also been interesting to compare other brands like sluban to cobi and lego as well. Sluban seems to use a scale closer to 1:32 , and these models seem to strike a nice balance between detail, stability and function. Not every kit is perfect, but sluban has even made many cobi kits look expensive in comparison without sacrificing much in terms of piece quality. Each brand has their own pros and cons, just as each kit has its own advantages and disadvantages as well. I hope people will be more willing to branch out and try other brands in the future. I've been pleasantly suprised by several of them

Love your video on this topic, I stopped building 1:35th ages ago, I do also think brickmania being original LEGO is half of the coolness which is why they won’t switch to cobi, it kinda defeats the purpose. I always think people should try to build there own stuff anyway

Great video! You did a great job! Remember, however, that nothing has changed at COBI and there will still be 1:28 scale models of vehicles, because this is the best scale for vehicles that can be played with. But there are many 1:35 scale fans asking for such models and COBI should also release vehicles on this scale. For a COBI fan, there is nothing better than giving him a choice so that the fan can decide which is better for him.

Artur, other then new Panzer III, the feed has been littered with 1:35 releases of late. Even QuanGuan has even been forced to design their own models such is the lull. (All due respect to them, their new sets are rather good). Long story short, were not seeing actions, and your long term fans are getting frustrated or considering alternatives.

You’ll see the most egregious brickmania scale offenses in a lot of Dan’s old kits vs their newer kits made by different designers. Look at their old Tiger II with ambush camo vs their newer one. The turret is a whole brick shorter. They insist on 1:35, yet it’s almost always between 1:32 and 1:30, sometimes they hit 1:35, but then it looks off compared to the rest of their kits

I buy 1:28 scale because of the detail and play ability. Also if you just let a moc just sit there, you forget to clean it. Thank you so much people always are against 1:28 when it is great if you want detail, the point of most mocs.

As someone who was afraid to sink the money into real model making, (I also don’t trust myself not to screw it up. It’s all very intimidating). I found Cobi to be an awesome substitute.
I’m simply head over heels obsessed with tanks, but knew nothing about the model community or Lego/cobi/brickmania communities. But after talking with friends, attending a Lego expo in search for tank builds, and even meeting the CEO of brickmania himself, I came to the same conclusions.
I felt like a noobie who was out of his place. Who just doesn’t understand that Brickmania is Brickmania! And you just can’t trash their sets. Even though I would repeatedly remark that Cobi sets looked way better and Brickmania was insanely expensive for no reason other than, “They use real Lego pieces!”
I thought maybe it was some veteran opinion that I just couldn’t wrap around my head at the time and I’d come around to it eventually. But once I watched my friend spend $400 on a Brickmania Stuart while I bought a MK V for $50, I couldn’t help but think my fresh eyes saw something they didn’t.
I personally don’t care about the figures at all, I just want more detailed tanks. I have a pak gun and some crates with guns hanging around but not a single soldier, because I personally just want to see the tanks. So the idea that people would specifically request lower detailed, smaller, and more fragile tanks for the sole purpose that they look better with figurines is genuinely baffling to me.

I've been collecting COBI for a long time, so I'm really disappointed with the way they are changing scales. I had no idea that they even posted a poll about scales and changing it just off that one poll, on a site that is more popular with older people would really skew the results on what people want. On Instagram and on their TH-cam live-streams, it's people asking for 1:28 scale, not 1:35.

I love my 1:28 tanks and I would‘ve bought so much more cobi this year, but seeing the company of heroes 3 Panzer IV next to my Flakpanzer IV Wirbelwind was such a shock, that I swore I would never buy a 1:35 tank again. Well I still hope they‘re going to make more tanks in 1:28 and less in 1:35.

After watching this a few times, I agree. I think cobi is moving towards taller figures unfortunately- so they scale better with the 1:35. Personally I think they should stick with 1:48 (for rough minifigure scale) and 1:27/1:28 (for greater detail and interiors) but they've already set the groundwork for more 1:35.

I buy Mega Bloks WW2 figures, because Lego figures look like baby toys. 1/28 works better for my figures. Lego army builders will always prefer 1/35, because they only want a display piece for their figures. I am sure the Market is bigger for 1/35 because more people collect Lego figures. However Mega slowly growing and some minority of Lego collectors like the 1/28 scale. So i hope the cobi will keep selling both scales. If they have to stop making a scale, i hope is the micro 1/48 tanks.

    • @RazReviews
      @RazReviews  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Usually amazon is the cheapest. I look for sets that have the pieces I need for a certain MOC. A lot of tanks are built using the same chassis, so you can use that as a shortcut and buy the official Cobi model, and then build the variant from there. For original MOCs which don't have a counterpart it's all about buying sets that have the pieces you think the MOC will need. There's really not a strategy to it. Some times I'll be mid-build and have to order a set to finish the MOC because I need a certain piece. Sometimes Cobi's official web store will have it and that will be cheaper. It varies from MOC to MOC.

    Hey hey people, Raz here

  • @Windhox_cz
    @Windhox_cz ปีที่แล้ว +3

So I am a bit late to the party but I will throw in my two cents anyway.
I am a wargamer by heart (I do mostly warhammer but I enjoy many others) and I also consider myself a history buff. So it is only natural that I want to do historical wargaming. The problem is where to get the models. Obvious solution would be scale models but my 40k mountain of plastic crack is so high that I would never realistically get to actually build and paint them. So Lego style models (I don't want to get into discussion is they are more toys or models but I will call them models here) were reasonable option.
I immediately looked into what Cobi has to offer. So lets talk about it:
There are 3 main scales that Cobi uses. 1:48, 1:35 and 1:28. (for the following keep in mind that I physically have the models so I am not making an argument based on a few pictures on the internet)
1:48 is good for wargaming and as you said it's the closest to the "scale" of figures. But limitations caused by the nature of bricks really shows through here. The proportions are often very... approximated to say the least and even so the scale can sometimes be a bit of. And the selection of vehicles is also quite small. Which is understandable considering the before mentioned brick limitations.
So it is between 1:28 and 1:35.
The figures look better with the 1:35. There is no question about that. (although I see a bit too many people claim that the 1:28 is closer to the figure scale which boggles me)
Here I really don't like the argument stating that the figures don't look appropriate with 1:35 vehicles either. While it is true that they are in fact not 1:35 (well they are not scale figures to begin with) they are closer to 1:35 and the accuracy is visually tolerable. Which cannot be said for 1:28 scale vehicles.
Now with figures out of the way let's talk details, proportions, play features and stability.
Your big argument against 1:35 Cobi sets was concerning features and stability.
Well the best counter argument actually comes from Cobi itself. (now it comes in handy that I am writing this comment over a year after the video was released) When looking at the stuff they released in 1:35 one can see that the guns have all the usual range of motion. The tracks also roll just as usual (for the most part). And the sets are all very stable and well build. The proportion are also on par with what I can expect and tolerate from a brick build model. And the detail. They really didn't sacrifice any significant amount.
You also made an argument that 1:35 is very limiting when it comes to smaller stuff. While I agree that in general the smaller scale you choose the less options you have. Thus many vehicles just cannot be realistically build in your scale of choice. But just look at the COBI 3048 Stuart! It is wonderfully detailed, small tank in 1:35.
One thing I agree on completely with you is the pricing. Even though 1:35 are noticeably smaller than their 1:28 counterparts the price difference is very small. So the volume of stuff per (insert a currency of your choice) ration gets worse for the 1:35.
    To summarize:
For my wargaming needs 1:35 is the best scale of the three.
There is a great range of possible vehicles and other models to choose from and the figures are visualy acceptable when standing close to 1:35 models. The only place where 1:35 cannot provide is with AT guns.
Other major factor is the fact that 1:28 models are just way too big to be used in wargaming. (well maybe I should have started my comment with that - it would have been way shorter. :DDD)
At the time of writing this I am very tired so maybe I will add to this comment at a later time if I think of anything else to say regarding this topic.

the manufacture of special parts for airplanes and tanks from cobi suggests that they simply lack professionalism. They just make special parts, rather than looking for ways to do everything with ordinary parts. 10:52

I'd argue the special parts are better because they open the door to better builds. As a MOC builder it's hard because they constantly release new parts that I want so I can update my builds to make them look better. Overall I like the specialized parts better than the generic Lego parts.

The idea of lego has always been that these are not ordinary plastic toys, but constructors. That is why brickmania specifically leaves the details uncovered. And also, brickmania can't use parts from other brands, so they have to get out somehow.Kobi kits don't look like a construction kit, they look like plastic toys

100% official Lego parts can go a long way for some people, especially if they are making a diorama with purely Lego bricks.
Some Custom Minifig collectors will buy a kit just for an exclusive minifig. Which I'll admit Brickmania minifigs and accessories are where the company actually shines.
Another case can be the rarity and FOMO since Brickmania kits are produced in miniscule amounts compared to Cobi. The aftermarket prices on somewhere like Ebay can reflect that.
Are these dumb reasons? Yeah. But Lego purists love shooting themselves in the foot, It's the purist mentality at its worse.
Doesn't help that Brickmania actively shoots down non-Lego brands like said in the video.

I think this a very interesting topic to discuss, but I don't know man...
I really agree with a lot of things you say like:
-Building Blocks are a toy, not meant for scale models (primarily) and resulting in not 100% true scale measurements
-Sets can only get so small before functions and features need to be cut
-Brickmania's kits are too expensive for what they offer (LOL)
But I feel like this video is more you bashing it out on Brickmania and their "Fanboys", blaming them for creating the "1:35th stigma" and being the reason COBI does 1:35 and so on.
Half of the stuff and your arguments I remember from the video without rewatching is more about how Brickmania sucks rather than the actual scale discussion...
What I mean is things like, was it really necessary to put the prices next to Brickmania's kits in the scale accuracy comparisons?
I wish this video would be a little bit shorter and more streamlined on the actual scaling issues rather then constantly bringing up how Brickmania is bad and other things like that, not helping the discussion of scale.
Okay feedback over, now I wanna add some of my own opinion:
I have to clearify, that I have no COBI moccing experience, however I do have almost a decade in moccing with LEGO. That includes a variety of things like 1/6th posable figures, 1/35th military vehicles and 1/48th Trains. Take note though, even as I say "1/48th", that doesn't mean a true scale in all dimensions. As you said, it's LEGO after all, you have to make some small deviations.
Same goes for any further mentioning of scales. I just don't want to write "1/30-1/38th scale" all the time or something.
I don't personally see the 1/35th scale-ish territory as a bad fit for LEGO or COBI military sets. You can fit a lot of features, while keeping it relatively small. Which is good, as COBI is primarily a toy for children and not a modelers kit or display piece. And I think kids don't really care about the scale of their figures that much, as long as they can play and interact with vehicle and figure.
In my opinion COBI should continue the 1/35th scale, but don't cheap out on details (I love how each new set nowadays adds more detail, they rock!).That way kids are happy and can play, while people like me, who just like this kind of size of model to display (yes I own a few COBI sets because they just look awesome) and want to admire all the details that were still being able to be put in, have a cheap way of getting military building block models.
Yet I also think bigger scales like 1:28th scale SHOULD be made by COBI for people like you, who truely wish for a consistent-in-itself scale model with even more details. Maybe a 1:28th scale could even get it's own minifigure, thus solving that problem as well.
(EDIT: I SHOULD ALSO CLEARIFY THAT I WOULDN'T CONSIDER MYSELF A BRICKMANIA FANBOY. AS A LEGO MOCCER, I RESPECT WHAT THEY ARE ABLE TO DELIVER IN TERMS OF INGENIOUITY, BUT DON'T CONDONE THER PRICES [THEIR RECENT START TO PROVIDE INSTRUCTIONS IS VERY GOOD AND AFFORDABLE THOUGH] NOR DO I EVER PLAN TO BUY AN ACTUAL KIT FROM THEM. MY LIMITED LIKING OF BRICKMANIA IS MORE DESIGN-BASED ON A TECHNICAL LEVEL AND NOT THE REASON OF ME WRTITING THE FOLLOWING THINGS. I AM PURELY POINTING OUT SOME THINGS I THOUGHT WERE UNFAIR TO JUST THROW OUT THERE AND ALSO DOESN'T HELP THE ACTUAL SCALE DISCUSSION. I WOULD DO SO FOR ANY OTHER BRAND. OKAY HOPEFULLY NO ONE THOUGHT THAT WAY ANYWAY, BUT I WANNA MAKE SURE.)
Lastly I wanna talk a bit about Brickmania (and maybe even fall back into the feedback part - oops). YES, their models are not museum pieces, YES they are very expensive and YES they might think of them a bit too highly. HOWEVER, as someone who builds 1/35th military LEGO MOCs, I can say ordering the pieces for them (even used, which is cheaper than new pieces) after shipping and all, I get close to their prices for a MOC. And thats excluding minifgures and other custom and printed pieces, an instruction booklet and everything else Brickmania would provide. So theoretically their prices are horandous, but considering all their parts are new, and their designs are restricted to using pieces you can get your hands on in "new" quality in bulk, they are realistic.
GENERAL TIPP FOR EVERYONE BTW: If it's too expensive, just don't buy it. There are hundreds of people providing like 10USD instructions for military MOCs on sites like Rebrickable. So if you want a LEGO military model, but don't wanna pay Brickmania prices, try other sites of fan-designs!
Also while some of the things they said about COBI in the bit you showed sound very mean and "looking-down-on-COBI-like", if you think about it, they are kinda true and not mean at all: If you owned a 1700 USD B-17 (or however much it costs), you wouldn't wanna let your little cousin play with it. A better option (and cheaper) for him would be a COBI one. So a lot of what they said feels kinda ripped out of context and instrumentalised for your own "I hate Brickmania"-Argument you push in this video. While in reality I see it as hidden Pro-COBI arguments and them just stating the obvious: COBI is more affordable, a better fit for children than Brickmania (more features, more stable) and a great entry into the brick-built military model hobby (doesn't mean it's only an entry and that Brickmania should be the destination).
Also after this whole "Brickmania sucks"-Propaganda - for lack of a better term - saying things like "Their sets are objectively bad" or worse or whatever feels more like a very subjective thing to say. I do agree COBI's sets display much better features and often better stability, but there are instances of where one might say COBI is objectively (or subjectively really, coz it all depends on what you want in a model!) worse: Yes the COBI F-14 is smooth and studless, but it can't fit a "real" minifig in it and uses a dummy, the wings need to be angled by hand, while Brickmania's F-14 has a gear function, the Brickmania one can subtract it's landing gear INSIDE the model and cover it with flaps - COBI's can't and so on and so on... (And yes, I know those two F-14s are in different scales, but RAZ himself compares them so I just went with this example)
So I think it is unfair (and shouldn't even be the point of this video) to say one brand is OBEJCTIVELY better than the other, based on criteria, only YOU have set up. Doesn't that make it subjective?
Call me a "Brickmania-Fanboy" now if you want, but rest assured I'll call you a "COBI-Fanboy" in return ;P
    TL/DR:
-Whole "Brickmania sucks" argument feels out of place in this video and very subjective in generell
-Yes, building bricks aren't perfect for building models, so my idea is:
    a) have COBI continue the 1/35th models for low price and children to play with as well as people who just want detailed 1/35th models
    b) still add a 1:28th "Collectors Line" with maybe even custom figs for people who want that scale and the increased detail it comes with
NO HATE TOWARDS ANYONE AGREEING WITH THIS VIDEO, NOT LIKING MY IDEAS OR FEELING ATTACKED BY THIS COMMENT. IT'S ONLY MY VERY SPONTANIOUS THOUGHTS AFTER WATCHING THIS VIDEO AND I AM VERY OPEN TO FURTHER DISCUSSION! HAVE A NICE DAY AND STAY SAFE AND HEALTHY!

    • @RazReviews
      @RazReviews  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Very well thought out comment. I appreciate you taking the time to write it. That’s what this video was for; to start a discussion.
      So to the Brickmania points:
1 - You literally cannot talk about 1/35 scale without bringing up Brickmania. They are the gold standard for 1/35 scale sets, and were building at that scale before everyone else.
2 - There is a significant crossover between Cobi and BKM's audience. I would say 30-40% of their audience are North American people who grew up with BKM, and that’s why I used them so much in the video. BKM is also featured in Bovington and other major museums just like Cobi. A lot of the MOC builders, and Cobi collectors either own a BKM set or have based one of their MOCs off of a BKM set.
3 - I could have used MOC builders more to demonstrate the scale issue, and I did in the original draft of the script, but I didn’t want to come off as rude. The Cobi MOC building community is very small, and they’re all really good guys. Also, they all mostly speak Polish so a lot would be lost in translation. I didn’t want to hurt any feelings, so I thought it would be easier to use BKM as a stand-in for the issues with 1/35 scale, because they're a big company and probably don't care what I think. Where as Cobi / Lego MOC builders are individuals who would feel attacked if I tore into their MOCs. Also, the BKM fan-base is extremely toxic to any non-BKM builds and they constantly sh*t all over Cobi. They started this beef years ago, not me. Read the comments of the BKM video I used if you don't believe me. I put the link the in the description and told people in the video to watch the whole BKM video. I think that's pretty unbiased and telling people to have their own opinion.
4 - The video is mainly about 1/35 scale and the issues it has and a defense for 1/28 scale. The main reason BKM gets brought up so much is because they have so many examples of 1/35 scale, and when you’re trying to fill a 27 min video of you talking it’s easier to show examples of the scale itself. I think my only real beef with BKM is their prices. Every other issue I mentioned in the video is inherent to the scale they build at, and the bricks they use so they don't really have much control over that because it's what their fans expect.
5 - I’m a grown ass man who builds Legos for fun, every opinion I have is invalid.

Now here's the thing. My parents bought me a kit or two years ago so i wasnt as old. One comparison is the tiger 2 COBI is like 38cm long? And the BRKM is like 24? Im not exactly sure. 1:35 is the best scale for tanks in a moc, who wants a tiny ass tank thats as big as a normal lego car, tanks are obv bigger than cars, i dont want my tanks to be smaller than my minifigures, but 1:28 scaled tanks or vehicles are for playing with, not mocs
