      @@hawkname1234 It depends who you’re up against. From what I’ve seen so far and it’s slightly less than half way I’d say Walz has performed exceptionally against the lizard man from Harvard. Vance’s sense of superiority oozes out of him like slime, he doesn’t have what Trump has, a successful TV carer. Unless there’s a clanger later this goes to Walz, Biden he isn’t, and Vance isn’t as superior as he wishes he was

    Independent here. From where I was sitting Walz seemed genuinely concerned about the future of our country, and he talked about some specific policies that will get us where we want to go.
    AND I kinda want to move to Minnesota- sounds like a nice place.

      Walz looked weak. The few times he really pushed back on Vance he immideately looked away and down, couldn`t look Vance in the eye during the confrontation. It`s about the worst thing that could happen because that will definitely turn off the bro guys that the democrats still need to win over.

      Vance doesn't seem to understand the job of vice president. He's accusing Harris of not doing things she has no power to do. Apparently he thinks if he becomes Vice President he'll be able to change immigration laws without consulting anyone, either the congress or even the president!

    I loved the way that Walz trapped Vance into not admitting that Trump lost the 2020 election. Then saying: “that’s why you’re on the stage tonight and not Pence.”

    What a great debate. As a person who works in the medical field I started laughing when Vance said migrants were overwhelming the hospital in Springfield Ohio. I just couldn't believe how much of a lie that was since I worked at that location prior to all the attention the city has gotten. It is overwhelmed because nobody wants to work at place likes this because of the low pay and horrible working condition with medical facility with a low retention rate. All, rural hospitals face this kind of problem and it is not because of migrants overflowing the hospital system. I just can't believe how much people like Vance could lie so much. After, all this is debate is going to be old news in 48 hours.

      I know a few rural medical workers in two different parts of the country with different problems. I'm wondering what "low pay and poor working conditions" means for Springfield. Out west the low pay comes from being in the lowest medicare reimbursement rate bracket despite being in a high cost of living area. Down South, "poor working conditions" meant hospital staff being assaulted by patients, families, and members of the community, who refused to believe COVID existed and accused the medical staff of murdering people "for the deep state". The staff had to wear panic buttons.

      Like you said, the problems at rural hospitals have a lot more to do with the way rural governments fail to finance their health care facilities and the generally poor state of the health of people who grew up and still live in rural communities.

      Recently I spent multiple occasions in a US city hospital. One thing became clear. Without immigrants, be they specialists, doctors, nurses, phlebotomists, cleaners, cafeteria staff, or people who transport patients from one department to another, hospitals would cease to function. I've encountered people from Iran, the UK, Kazakhstan, Nigeria, India, Russia, Pakistan, Somalia, Egypt, Eritrea, Uganda, Italy, and even North Dakota, just to name a few foreign countries. I'm sure rural hospitals have special difficulties but they also tend to be places where immigrants, to put it tactfully, are often not understood or do not have a community they can turn to for help or advice.

    We reelected Walz after the riots and the pandemic because is is capable and effective. The reason we got all those important laws passed here in MN is because he can build consensus. Democrats only had a one seat advantage in the State Senate and just 6 in the house. We have a significant rural population here he built bridges with. He can stand on his record and on the notable success of our state. What you don’t understand about Walz is exemplified in this Maya Angelou quote:
    “I've learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” People can feel his honesty and genuineness.

    If you think Vance won, you’re too focused on style. He was smoother, but it came across as fake because he’s been crazy out on the stump. We got a demonstration of Walz’s ability to disarm his opponents. WALZ = AUTHENTICITY; VANCE = I’LL SAY ANYTHING TO GET AHEAD.

    Let me tell you about Governor Walz… My 16 yr old daughter found out she would continuously loose the ability to walk in life that day she went to a Walz speech that my husband was covering.
    Walz came over friendly joked asked what happened, my daughter was upset and angry with her walker; she “ It’s permanent!”
    Walz stated: “Oh that’s not good for a young person “ Walz was very upset my daughter rushed away.
    After his speech he found my anger teenage daughter and said “I am sorry I shouldn’t have said that. How did it happen. “
    Then he took time at a political event to talk to angry 16 year old who found out will live in a wheelchair.
    That’s who Walz is and has asked how she doing when he saw my husband.
    Governor Walz CARES About People about all of Us. The little people.
    This is our personal experience with Governor Walz.

    No one is giving Walz credit for the fact that he set the mood of that debate. All the journalists kept saying it was civil and warm but no one is pointing out that Walz actually did that.
    Vance came in hard, and kind of rude, calling him Tim repeatedly, but as it went on you saw him melt every time Walz gave him the benefit of the doubt or suggested that Vance wanted to work on issues as much as Walz did. You could actually see Vance adapting to fit/please Walz in real time. To the point Vance actually said several things that were almost left leaning.
    That made me realize Walz can really work with people on both sides of the aisle to maybe get some things done in a government that struggles to do anything!
    And while he’s getting torn apart for not debating in a certain way, he really spoke to me and I felt like he was explaining issues in an interesting way, by using his life experiences to make them more vivid. The topics weren’t just sound bites to him, they felt real and you could see the consequences that some policies have.

      I absolutely agree. Walz ran the whole mood and it was my big takeaway as well. A man to actually unite people and find the middle ground. I thought he did a great job and I love him even more.

    I love most of your analyses, but it really shows the difference between political pundits analysis and regular people.
    I’m in Law School and Vance definitely won ”the debate” if judged by professionals. However, I watched the debate with three non-professional regular people including one Trump leaning voter, and all three loved Walz. They understood and felt without my prompting that he is a leader looking for solutions and that Vance is a politician trying to give the right answer.
    Even the Trump leaner shifted to trusting Walz and by extension Kamala, saying “Look, I don’t like Kamala, but Walz is like my high school baseball coach, and if he trusts her to look out for people like us, I believe him.”

      ​@@wellnative1yeah, a lot of ordinary people who are not full blown Maga cult seem to be commenting with disdain for Vance's slickness and lies, vs. Walz's sincerity. Even people who may have had doubts about Harris. Part of me gives a technical win to Vance as he made more points (although many were lies) and not enough of them were refuted by Walz., when they could/should have been. But at the end of the day, his constant lies that Harris was responsible for everything wrong in America and that Trump had done a great job for ordinary Americans during his presidency, will only ring true with the substantial minority in a right wing media silo, who do not bother to google the actual facts about crime, wage movement and job creation during the Trump presidency and Biden's term.

    Walz looked like a dad, uncomfortable in a fancy suit and you knew that the slick Ivy Leaguer debater was probably going to run circles around him (and he did). The thing that resonated with me is that under the Republicans, women and children are dying but where Walz is in charge, women and children are protected, respected and taken care of. That he was able to make clear. Total dad energy. Don't underestimate that.

    NBC News just polled their focus group of 6 undecided voters in Pennsylvania who won the VP debate.
    5 of 6 said Tim Walz won the debate.

      Small focus groups have value: they poll participants before and after and if they shift their position it does have significance. Although they’re purely qualitative, they allow for nuanced data. 5 out of 6 is actually very telling (if they were indeed undecided prior to the debate).

    Edited: Unfortunately… they both appeared to do well. However, Vance lied and was not genuine and definitely was swarmy. I am with Sarah- I cannot stand him. 😵‍💫
    Walz was genuine, compassionate, passionate, and honest. I hope people really see Walz and see right through Vance. 🤞🏻

    I thought Walz won the debate. Vance pivoted away from answering any questions. JD seemed to be promoting himself as the next president while Walz was pushing Kamala forward. Us common folk enjoyed the Walz persona.

    Have to admit that J.D. Vance was the better debater but, Tim Walz was better than expectations. J. D. Vance definitely avoided answering the questions and hit the talking points that he wanted to. Tim Walz was definitely too midwest and missed the opportunities to pin the lies and misinformation on the republican ticket. So many details to hit at this point but, I still feel like the Harris/Walz ticket is the easy choice. Trump/Vance are still the used car salesmen who are out to take you for all they can get from you.

      Just because people say Vance won the debate doesn't mean they liked his performance. I can't stand the guy, hated how he behaved and thought he didn't answer a single question. But considering the job now is to convince low interest voters (who don't know who Vance is) I think yes, he probably won this debate. We'll see when we get some more concrete numbers.

    I think Walz succeeded most, during the second half, in bringing JD to his level of nice. He got JD to agree with him and thank him often on solutions. Walz is a legislator not a politician, he comes from the position of solutions it rhetoric! I am biased because my vote is for Harris/Walz because our democracy depends on it.

      I like Walz and believe fervently that trump must be beaten but the fact that he “ misspoke” about his time in Hong Kong is troubling and I just know much will be made of it.

    I thought Vance may have improved his image. However, I thought Walz turned out to be a better debater than he said he was. Walz, being a governor, shared his knowledge and experience to govern and solve real problems. Walz did point out the mistakes of Vance. The overall “amiability feelings” of the debate was positive as compared the “bad feelings“ created in the previous debate. I thought Walz knows his stuff. He could lead in an emergency. I am sick of attacking in politics. Walz had some opportunities he missed to react to, however, Walz did react to many things. I enjoyed the civility ALOT .
    I thought Walz really did a good job because he was first of all authentic and secondarily explain how his policies, very similar to Harris’s policies were so effective and beneficial in his state, Minnesota.

    Woof, that was ruff. I will say this about the debate: one of the people on stage appeared just as we know him to be. The other guy was playing a role that was the opposite of who he is. Maddow did a great job calling out Vance’s comments that we are in a “late Republican period”…which Tim did pick up on…but I don’t know sometimes what focus groups Sarah is doing. I’m in Wisconsin and they are NOT what I am seeing or hearing. And the post debate focus focus groups are NOT at all negative about Walz. The j6 question was terrible for Vance, and one young guy pointed out astutely that Vance constantly tying Harris to “why hasn’t she done it for 4 years” was she’s the VP…it’s not her job!!!!

    We are in a unique situation. You don't want anyone painting Walz as the real power. He comes off as supportive, caring and sincere. He doesn't seem like someone who will be pulling Kamala's strings. His softness makes Kamala look even stronger and more in command, but you trust him to have her back. You're all grading according to the public speaking checklist. If this were speech class, Vance would get an A. It's not. Walz does not come off as a slick politician, and Americans are averse to slick, career politicians right now. You can protest as much as you like, but I do think you guys got it wrong.

I was watching Roland's post debate show, and although disappointed with some missed opportunities on Walz's side, they absolutely had Vance in the crosshairs for slickness, lies and his non answer on Jan 6.     Tim Walz did what we all keep saying we want: he stood his ground when he needed to, but he did try to find common ground. Isn't that what we have to do if we are ever going to get rid of the horrible division Donald Trump created? Walz gave us a great example for healing that division. He stayed calm, consistently brought civility, but he made it clear that Vance's not accepting the 2020 election results was a bridge too far. He did NOT let Vance get away with that.

    I dunno what some of you commentators watched, but Walz did a great job without telling slimy lies. Some of the post-analysis here was spot on, some other takes from you folks was literal horseshit - aimed at Walz - from obvious disdain for the man.
    They both did well here. One a seasoned debater who couldn't admit his boss lost the last election...and one not as well versed in debates, but well versed in being a human and a leader who knows how to speak truth.

Again regular guy here but one of the things that I liked about Tim was that instead of making everything seem so big and worldly he took what he knows about his state in Minnesota and the things that are similar to what Harris wants to do made it much more relatable so he wasn’t talking in big giant terms he was making it very specific and very down to terms for people who may not be all engrossed in the details of everything at least that’s how it came across to me. Now, as far as JB vans the only consistent thing I kept hearing from him was Kamala bad she’s bad. Don’t listen to Kamala cause she’s bad and that’s it.

    Walz held up ok. The ways he "failed" are how the average person would. It's endearing, understandable, relatable.

      I think that he failed in that he didn't "go for the jugular" which is what most political analysts and Democratic partisans want. As a result they overreact. But I don't think the average person cares. The only things people will remember are the China thing (although it really wasn't explained well) and Vance dodging the question about certifying the election. In the end none of this moves the needle.

    I like that Walz appeared to take notes while Vance spoke. He seemed focused even if his delivery could be better

    Debate almost went as I suspected, Vance is so slick and Walz a little clumsy, but I think and hope it will age well for Dems. Walz nailed him on Jan 6 and Vance’s habitual lies and creepiness all came into focus.

    Vance is a good debater. He was smooth, confident, and was controlled enough to sound like he was being reasonable. This is the veneer that makes people think that some MAGA politicians are stronger figures. If somebody is uneducated, uninformed, and unable to think critically, I can see how they could be taken in. What I truly wish that people would do is actually think beyond style to substance. Vance stands on an empty platform that he fills with whatever he can to advance himself. Tim Waltz, on the other hand, may misspeak and not be as polished a speaker, but he stands for what is right for the country. His empathy for others is not an act that serves only his thirst for power. He stands on the right side of the rule of law - the side that is invested in protecting the people, supporting them in their struggles and times of need, and genuinely trying to foster growth for those who need it.
    Ultimately, this debate did very little to change my mind. But then again, it was perhaps a reminder that when all is said and done, the VP really does their best when we hear nothing about them. They do not make policy decisions (I’m talking to you, Vance!), they support the principal, and they wait in the wings until disaster or heinous mistakes shine the media spotlight on them. Let us hope that Waltz will hold down the fort and support Harris from the shadows and that Vance will disappear into the ether for good.

    Walz survived. No major disasters or gaffes or mistakes- this is worth celebrating. I was concerned Vance would troll Walz with some dig, carefully crafted to get under his skin or set him off on some easily meme-able rant, which when taken out of context or framed in an intellectually dishonest way, would make Walz seem unstable or unsuitable. So the fact that Walz was at times not smooth or polished or very articulate, is perhaps unfortunate, but for better or worse, the VP debate will not dramatically change the contours of the race. I think the Walz team may have psyched themselves out and played not to lose instead of playing to win.
    But again, this its not a normal presidential election- it’s bigger than policy differences or the latest political issue of the week. And smart folks keep saying, “we’re not voting for Perfect, we’re voting for President,” which I think helps put things in perspective.

      I'd agree with this. The break definitely helped Walz; he looked tense and taken aback at first with Vance's lies and non-answering of questions. Vance came across as way too slick, slick in the 'I will take everything you own and have no remorse' kind of way. Walz faltered a couple of times, but came across as human, caring, and 'normal'. If the Trump campaign thinks they got a win tonight...they're wrong. But it did give us a glimpse of Vance 2028.

    Walz was very forthright and his own good self. Vance was mostly smooth, but obviously wasn't invested. I'm voting for Harris/Walz. Honesty, courtesy, forthright, factual.

      That was Vance's mission - appear reasonable. Walz should not have agreed with Vance so much. Walz needed to end every response reminding the audience how extreme Vance's beliefs are. Call him out on his public positions...and especially his Project 2025 Plan beliefs.

    The commenter class is hilarious. The feedback from most of these guys is Walz lost, while user comments across the board are talking about the warmth and realness of Walz. So you just have to ask yourselves, what impressed most voters and how will that affect the choice they have to make. To me it's pretty clear.

    Honestly I find your shallow perception hard to fathom. Lying is strong? Vance wore eyeliner but he came off as more serious? Do you hear yourselves? I think you've been in the rationalization zone too long. Yeah it wasn't a great performance for Walz, he does better with personal interactions but he came off as direct, relatable and knowledgeable. If you consider that a strong performance for JD - as he lied continually, couldn't admit Trump lost, talked about abortion in frankly insulting ways and generally came off like a used car salesman... I think you may want to rethink your perceptual bias and how your fear has played on it.
