Absolutely, Sasha S. Also, a reference to Schubert with those trills. Brahms loved Schubert and considered him greater than he himself as a composer. With these works, Intermezzi, Capriccios. Romances and Rhasodies: E flat and B minor we know this Cat was a top pianist himself. Brahms left off of practicing, devoted his purposes to creation, composing. Everybody should get his 2nd concerto in B flat. The Sviatoslav Richter, Erich Leinsdorf, Chicago Symphony Orchestra pressing of this work. It is DIVINE, in sound and just Richter's energy. He was 40 years old when appearing here in the U.S. if ever anyone wondered about Brahms' ability to play, this work leaves no doubt in anyone's mind. Plus of course, the Paganini Variations.

Die rot markierte Melodieführung ist für mich so hilfreich gewesen. Vielen Dank

I love Brahms. He's so deep. In fact, I have the feeling that when it tries to be "light" and carefree like in some passages here it doesn't really sound "right", like you can feel the shadow behind it. Is it just me? I'm very curious to know if other people feel the same or not.

Yes I feel this too, in this piece, but is it Paul's interpretation or Brahms' music? It seems clear to me but judge for yourself: th-cam.com/video/WXnojYMsYmA/w-d-xo.html and th-cam.com/video/WXnojYMsYmA/w-d-xo.html Thanks once again to Ashish Xiangyi Kumar. As well as Paul Barton for this delightful recording, of course.

I agree. I think this is the lightest work he has in his op. 118 set, and you can feel an emotional depth to his work here.

In my study I can lay my hand on the Bible in the pitch dark. All truly inspired ideas come from God. The powers from which all truly great composers like Mozart, Schubert, Bach and Beethoven drew their inspirations is the same power that enabled Jesus to do his miracles.

Nice performance. I do take issue with your highlighting of the melodic line, however. I would argue that in bar 4 and 8 it is the three repeated half notes that are the conclusion of the phrase. The theme is doubled in octaves and the lower voice clearly goes that route. Just food for thought.
