- The DCSO is thrilled to present Lakay by Haitian composer, Christopher Ducasse. This chamber work is based on an important Haitian rhythm and dance called, “Yanvalou”, which is sometimes linked to folkloric themes surrounding knowledge, patience, strength, and healing. The title, “Lakay”, is the Haitian Creole word for “home”, and was written by Ducasse as an expression of longing for one’s home. In the words of the composer, “Lakay isn’t a sad piece, on the contrary, it is pretty excited and full of energy, which is a representation of the Haitian culture, always strong, always looking at the bright side, and happily move [sic] forward in life while honoring and remembering our past.” These themes strongly resonated with us as we prepared this piece during a challenging semester, and we hope that you find strength and joy in this performance.
